EDIT: BTW im a photoshop newbie so dont laugh too hard :D
Not to bad not bad atall! Do some playing with it and youll get better at it. Ive been playing with it for some time now and think Ive gotten a lil better at it. I like Gif Animator 5 personally the best. It does have limits, but you can do so much with text.

is there a d/l site for all the backgrounds and such that are floating around the fourms such as this one but in high rez such as 1280x1024 or 1600x1200

Hmm... I thought I answered that question... Guess not, sorry. No all those were made by a member here, theres a thread around here that has all the ones he made up. Links to all that were made.
