View Full Version : Helheim's WaterCooling

As welll as building Noldors Watercooling rig, I am working on Helheims watercooling system. today I got a bunch of stuff. Packages came from fedex, USPS, and UPS.

Sofar this is what I have

2xMCW6002 (dual xeon)
Lian-Li PC-7077
3x 80CFM Panaflo 120x38mm
3x Nexus Real Silent fan 120x25mm
5/8" T-Line
Wormdrive Hose Clamps

On the way from danger den, is a BIX3, D5, tygon, and some zerex.

The last two things will be a dangerden Fillport and maze4gpu, but those will have to wait a little while.

I really must say this lian li is huge.. but at the same time it is incredibly light and amazingly well made.

robert, did you forget your medication or something?????? I dont get your post.

I will post up some pics helheim.. kinda wiped right now and a tad bit busy, but i will get some pictures. To keep everyones gear seperated, I jammed all the fans, waterblocks, etc in the case in an effort to maintain my sanity.

here is a bump and a picture of pretty much all of the parts for anyone interested.

I will get down to the modding of the case pretty soon, but still need to get the fan grill for the top of the case.. waiting on performance-pcs to release the ACRyan grill..

Looks good, can't wait to see some more pics once you get started modding it all up. Does anyone know of any good flow meters with digital output that aren't over 200 bucks?

Thanks.

Max, they are called HOLE SAWS... invest in some.

MaxxxRacer
09-15-2005, 07:29 AM
nik, I got one.. I just dont like it as it makes the holes too small. Hole saws around here are all in american measurments, not in metric so finding something that is equivalent to 120mm is harder than one thinks. I used my whole saw on my case back in the day, and it works pretty well except when you slip and put a gigantic gouge in the case.

nikhsub1
09-15-2005, 07:56 AM
Max, 4 - 4 1/4" is what to use for 120mm

MaxxxRacer
09-15-2005, 08:00 AM
nik, the one I have is 4 1/4" . Personally I still find it too small and kills the venturi effect of the fan...

MaxxxRacer

Helheim if it REALLY bothers you, I will put an XS grill on there for free.

lol nik.. well in my defense, the hole i made is big enough to where the venturi effect isnt bothered as the corners of the fan (where the acutal venturi is) are not covered.

Very nice, although a small remark :

the fan grill doesn't cover the blowhole totally (bottom left side), which is to bad. Just my 0.02€.
Wouldn't it been better if you had made the cut in shape of the fangrill, instead of making a blowhole?

MaxxxRacer
09-15-2005, 10:22 PM
well this fangrill was an afterthought. IF I had planned to cut the hole for this grill, i would have made it the 6 straight edged shape the grill is...

Looking good so far.

What kind of barbs are you using on the radi? They look the same as DD uses on their GPU blocks.

MaxxxRacer
09-16-2005, 12:36 AM
The barbs on the rad are just the stock ones that DD gives out. so yes they are the same ones as on all of their waterblocks.

I did the cutout for the BIX3 and I'm just awaiting on ACRyan to release those fan grills....

amp: I used the dremel along with that template, and then finished it off with 150 grit paper and files.

the windows look great, but that one that performance-pcs sells I cant exactly copy. would have to get it from them. its not possible to copy it, as I have no way to mill lucite, dont have a riveter, and i dont have a laser cnc to make perfectly straight cuts.

BUT helheim and I have been disucssing that sidepanel, and he said he will probably purchase it at a later time.

Looking very nice maxx :D

Is there any space to fit a shroud between the fans / core?

How far are the fans spaced off the core at the moment?

When using them to pull air through I found that it was allot quieter with a decent gap (like an inch)

magg
09-17-2005, 08:23 AM
Ack!! Rotate the Panaflo's so their stickers are all going the same way. Damn OCD getting in the way :lol

That certainly is a site to behold, that's going to look gorgeous when it's finally finished. What are these oh so famous ACRyan grills you keep referring to?

Also [this is kind of more directed towards Helheim], why choose a reservoir instead of a t-line? I'd be worried to put what looks to be a hell of a system in a rig with a bay res, knowing how often things go wrong with those.

Helheim
09-17-2005, 09:03 AM
From all the reading I did it just sounded like a res was better plus maxxx said if it's installed right there isn't usually a problem with them... I don't know, is a t-line really better?

Holst
09-17-2005, 09:07 AM
The bay res is 100% fine as long as you are sensible when installing the barbs.

You can crack them and get a leak if you overtighten things. But as maxx knows what he is doing you should be fine with it.

JasonDTM
09-17-2005, 09:35 AM
^^^ those RES' are good, but as you said, the downside is overtighting them as the mold line runs right across the barb bungs, I never did get a hole plug for my RES. lol

MaxxxRacer
09-17-2005, 09:51 AM
I found that you can almost entirely tighten the barbs in by hand, so when it got too hard to tighten by hand I stopped. I will obviously do leak testing to confirm that the barbs are the correct tightness..

I did run into one issue.. I needed to install all of the tubing, but did not have the mobo to be able to attach the waterblocks to. Well as you will see I came up with a very cunning plan, and now all of the tubing is cut to length and ready to go.

As of now I am pretty much just waiting on the ACRyan grill (http://www.acryan.com/_radgrillz/index.shtml), and at that point all I will have left to do is attach the rad to the case and the pump to the case (they are only in temporary restraints at the moment)

holst, there is no shroud with the BIX, so the fans are bolted directly to it.. I would have liked to had a shroud, but the only one that would have worked is the shroud from vouyermods that is acrylic and those things are so shallow that you would be essentially wasting ur money to buy one

and now what you ahve all been waiting for.. the pictures..

Is it not better to have the fans sucking through the radiator?

The airflow that's coming into the case seems rather restricted to me :stick:

Other than that, I like it :)

MaxxxRacer
01-16-2006, 02:31 AM
Cyber, the fans are sucking air through the rad out of the case.

Bringing air into the case is 3 Nexus Stealth fans. One in bottom front, one in top back, and one on the side panel.

There are also 2 80mm exhaust fans next to the mobo. It shouldtn make a big difference which way those fans are pointing..

Leeum, thanks. Takes a long time to get the cut accurate enough for my liking.

Cybertronic
01-16-2006, 02:33 AM
Sorry I didn't realise the rear case fans was facing the other way, good idea though :)

Helheim
01-16-2006, 09:57 AM
After I fixed the hole in the rad, but that was my fault, it's been great. Very speedy! :D I can't really put a CD ROM drive in it though. The drive fits but the connection is right behind the one tube. If that one had a bit of slack it would have been ok I think. Not a big deal though I as I don't really need one.

The onboard temp sensors say it's 32-33c idle and running four instances of prime it was 46-48c but, as MaxxxRacer says they don't mean much.

Damn it looks good. How do you like it man?

I assume the tubing lengths were all correct? Spent alot of time making sure that they would be...

Mr. Tinker
01-16-2006, 11:18 AM
It's been my experience that fans sucking right up against a textured opening such as radiator fins or the grille of a case is louder than it "should" be (louder than the fan in open air). This is probably caused by the oscillating pressure differential created by the fan fins moving over the surface next to them. This happens only when the fan is a few mm away from the surface. Moving the fans just a bit away for the surface helps a lot, as well as switching to push.

Is this the case here and how far away from the rad fin surface are the fan blades?

If you grab a lite-on 52x CD rom drive ~35 dollars, it is really short, and will fit great.
