Well sitting a delta up to my heatercore probably isn't that effective when cooling an x800pro and a diego, soon to be an x800pro and 320 watt TEC, so I figured it was time to shroud my fans. Being the cheap person I am I grabbed the fedex box my dry ice tube came in (it was shipped UPS  ), a pair of scissors, some masking tape (didn't want my heatercore all sticky from duct tape) and went to work. I used 2x 120MM 130CFM 50some DBA delta fans at 12V and they are resting on some foam to absorb vibrations.

Considering the very affordable price ($0.00) and the easy of installation (10 minutes) I highly reccomend the ghettotek-tm heatercore shroud to everyone who needs to save a few bucks :)

BTW, that's my AC vent ducted to the radiator. Works quite well :)

I say use tin foil next time.

or, if you have a few spare hours...

it, too, was very affordable ($0.00); however, construction was a few hours, painting was pretty quick (except for the drying part), and installation was about half an hour...

Someone who wants the best performance out of their radiator? :p:

I like to use cardboard and duct tape, myself.

As long as it holds my fans close to the rad and keeps the air from going out the sides, it's all good.

and doesn't have time to make their own shroud and has plenty of extra money lying around :)

So far so good, tons of airflow through rad and noise is about the same with TWO fans over ONE because it's not right up on the core... 33C BIOS temps at 2915mhz 1.8ish volts :D Pretty good for a sub 100 dollar WC rig... using a mag3 in a 2 gallon bucket, the heatercore, and a dtek TC4 socket a block.

I Used "tape" (2us$ 50meters) and did not need to paint it. ;)

afireinside, you are one lucky fella! But I love the quality ghettoness of your mod ;)

Weapon, you're such a champion. But instead of getting one of your quality shrouds I've opted to just cut out a 120mm fan and use that for my rad.

that will help with the spacing but kill your performance on a 302 as it will exclude at least one row on each side of the 302.

Ah well don't hate me but I have a BIX anyways :( I got it with a fan for only ~$30 AU so I can't complain.

where can I purchase this ghettotek shroud!? :D

I woulda loved one of weapons shrouds...hell the 302 and shroud combo looks damn sexy...modded my own though...which is hideous compared to his but it works :P and my 'shroud' consists of weather stripping between the heatercore and the underside of the top of the case with 2 120mm's sitting on top of acrylic on the top of the case....only like 2 1/2 inches at the most, but it seems to be working quite well....I've got SpecialBlend to thank for that mounting job.....a weapon shroud would only fit if the heatercore is where it is now and I put the shroud on top of the case....oh well perhaps in the future :D

8.95 plus shipping and handling. Inside the box you will find six (6) pieces of masking tape and one (1) instruction page (writen on a napkin) describing where to cut the shipping box for optimal fan placement.

Back to my setup, temps rose up to 37C after the heatercore warmed up (the AC ducted to it all day with no heatload had it frozen down to 10-15C) so 2915 was hell to get stable. Still a nice setup, time to get me a real socket 939 waterblock. Or maybe just some dry ice :D

I already ordered 38 kits and 50 do it yourself kits. I will be personally picking them up. Seattle to Jersey is a long way but worth it imo.

LOL

I made mine from a Dell cardboard box. Painted it to match my H20 components too. Took about a half hour. Overall, pleased.

Scroatdog

Performs just fine! I've got an inch of standoff between the fans and the rad.

if you are using cardboard anyway, you should try to work a bit of the venturi shape into the design. Cardboard is easy to cut and bend so why not try to squeeze that last bit of performance out? I tested a lot of prototype designs by making them out of thick cardboard or foam board and quite a few out of acrylic sheet.

Acrylic ones are not really that difficult to make. You need a dremel, some #16 IPS weld-on (or other suitable acrylic sheet cement), an acrylic etching blade and a straight edge. 1/8" or 1/4" thickness will work -- 1/4" is a bit tougher to cut but it ends up being very strong when properly cemented at the joints. Add a little primer and paint and they can look pretty good as well:

"work a bit of the venturi shape into the design"

Weapon-
How much standoff do you use?
And have you done "tested" with a venturi also covering the fan sides?
Have you done "tested" with the venturi also covering that slight rad edge I see in
your picture?
Looks like the rad has a side on it, just wondering about that "GAP" in the pic?
Also does your "venturi shape" only sloap on sides or also on ends?
Thanks

PS: Your guides are the "-hit", I'm sure we all love em!!!!! :toast:

Standoff: ~40mm is a good balance between performance and space restrictions.

If you cover the sides of the fans with the shroud so that the housing of the fan is sunk into the shroud's air chamber, it will cause turbulence, dead air spots and otherwise screw up airflow through the shroud.

The gap in the pic is not really a gap - it is the solder seam where I added flat copper side panels onto the core. The other stuff around the edge of the shroud in the above pic is vapco (i.e. a substance much like prommie seal string) that makes an airtight seal between the shroud and the core.

venturi shape -- the one in the pic has a slight angle on all four side panels but it is more pronounced on the sides. The newer designs have more of an angle on all 4 panels.

Thanks weapon!
But
I was thinking more of a shroud, then a box for the fans, above and separate from the
shroud.
So 40mm, (I'll figure out the American version later! lol)
And more is a waist and less not as good?

cartmanea
09-15-2005, 01:44 PM
More is better, but uses more space. 40mm is a "good balance" so beyond that you have diminishing returns.
