View Full Version : Watercooling a 7800GTX?

I have a Koolance Exos1 with a GPU block 180 and OCZ ram sinks that I used on my 6800 with great results. Can I transplant these to my 7800GTX? The 7800 looks to be compatable with the Koolance block and the ram sinks will just have to be put on both sides of the card instead of one (the ram chips seem to be put on both sides instead of 1...Correct?)

I also hear that if I watercool the 7800 I have to be carefull not to cool it too much, how much is too much? My 6800gt@420-1150 idles at 42c and full load about 48c. Will I have problems watercooling this beast? I want 510-1350 :D

You probably won't need to worry because the min temp that it starts throttling is 35C so the 7800GTX probably makes more heat then the 6800gt so you are good.

My card goes below 35C all the time....77.76 and 77.77 can go down to 10C without problems however.

The 7800 series actually makes less heat than the 6800 series (hence the single slot cooling solution as opposed to dual). This is becuase of the newer fab process used on the 7800 series.

teen, xbit labs tested the 7800 and it sucked up 2watts more than the 6800Ultra. Granted it depends on what 3D app your using, but essentially the power draw is the same

the koolance will be completely compatible, so no worries.

There is a "BFG 7800GTX watercooled" using the koolance chipset block with the angled elbows...so i'm sure it will be fine. got the block and heatsinks myself, but no pump

Thanx for the info people. I think I will use 'cheap' compound on the gpu just to make sure she stays above 35c :p: So the new drivers keep the card form throttling untill 10c? I have read about people still having problems with 77.77 but that could be becouse they never uninstalled the old ones drivers the correct way.

Why in the heck would Nvidia have the card throttle down becouse it was running too cold  Thats one of the stupidest things I have ever heard of

Tbh, I'd wait for Danger Den to make the NV-78's :D

fresh install of windows..a8n sli, bios 1011, BH-5 UTT, venice 3500+, 6.66 chipset driver, 77.77 driver, AND 77.76...32c idle..i lose about 8fps in 3dmark 05 test one. stop test..card @ 42c imdediately after...restart test...those 8fps are back.
77.72 driver throttling is worse.

there is still trottling, if you ask me, but try for yourself. THe past few days it has been very cold locally...avg about 5c outside at night. these temps, with my window open, give me the 32c idle. normal room temp see 42-46c, and no throttling.

Something to keep in mind.

I ordered my Maze 4 a fews days ago . It will work on a Swiftech Apex ......just waiting .

I use a Danger Den NV-68 on my 7800 GTX.....the results are fine, mutch better than on the 6800 Ultra I had.

30°C-38°C idle
60°C load in Ati tool artifacts scan.

It is going up to 85°C with the stock HFS in max load and 45°C idle.

With my MCW-50, my load temps with Systool's dual PI 32M looping (CPU is before GPU in the loop) and 3DMark05 a few times is 44C. During gaming load is 42C. During 3D05ing (without CPU load) load is 42C. Idle varies on what I have the AC at....go figure. I didn't gain much of an OC at all though...5MHz on the core and 10MHz on the memory (went to OCZ copper ramsinks with lots of breeze) from the stock cooler. Card runs COOL to the touch.

IMO, everyone who watercools a 7800GTX should do a vmod to do it justice. I haven't done mine justice yet.

Your right Vapor, it does seem the overclocks under water are not much better than the stock air cooler. If you look at the stock cooler...it is pretty beefy. I'm going to stick with air cooling the card untill the throttling issue is resolved, although I exspect case temps to rise abit :( It sucks to have to rip my rig down and mess with water filled lines as I hoped to keep everything together during the transplant ( bought a Seagate 120, Asus A8N delux and BFG 7800GTX) and just swap the GPU cooler right on the 7800.

Anyone know if Frozen CPUs 6mm (1/4) UV hose are as good as my braided blue Koolance hose? I can't find that solid blue hose that came with my Koolance. I need more hose now as the old setep will not work and I want quality hose that will work and NOT LEAK with the Koolance couplers

i asked this same question.. however i didnt see a clear consensus here.. should i buy the Koolance GPU to go on my Exos 1??? for my 7800GTX... also.. is there a waterblock that will benefit from the lower flow rate of the Koolance system???

and my card idles @ a ridiculous 51* C .. but my CPU is only @ 28* cuz its already Watercooled.

to go with the exos, and it's current tubing, and low flow, yes, there is no better than the koolance block. If you were in a diff situation, other blocks WOULD perform better, but that's not your question.

cadaveca are those clocks on your 7800 stable and done on air cooling?

yes, after i pulled the thermal blankets off the ram.

Agreed, not only that but since the radiator in the Koolace is aluminum you will have problems with copper blocks ! thats why the Koolance blocks are gold plated to prevent corrosion with the aluminum rad.

But the question is: How are you cooling your MOSFETS? Did you install an extra fan over this area of the card?

I myself use a 80mm fan over the chipset/vid PWM area, as my chipset fan is unplugged. I dunno about these Nforce4 boards...not one has had a queit fan!
