Ok, here is my problem. I have two hard drives.. a C and D drive. I had windows xp on the C drive and have had it on there fine for the last few months. Then last night i got bored and installed windows 2000 on the D drive to dual boot. Now, when i try to boot windows xp (by selecting Windows Xp Home Edition from the boot menu when the computer boots up) it wont boot.. here is what the whole loading thing does after i select Windows XP to boot.

Starting Windows 2000...
Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTE
Md
Startup options for Windows 2000, press F8
You can attempt to repair this file by... blah blah blah

Ok.. so why does it say it is trying to boot windows 2000 when i select windows xp? And so far i have booted up from the windows xp cd and tried used the repair consul to run fixmbr and fixboot and neither helped. Also.. usually when i boot from the xp cd i can eventually get to an option that says repair windows xp and it will repair it.. that option isnt even on there now... now it just tells me that if install xp i have to press L and it will delete the old windows xp files and i will loose all my stuff and settings.
Here is what my boot.ini files looks like

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0
)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partiti
on(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partiti
on(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Well, if anyone can help, please let me know!! I dont want to have to loose all my settings!! Thanks.

Yeah, my experiences with winxp and dual booting haven't been good. I dunno what the problem is exactly, but you can try to boot winxp in debug mode by adding /d to the end of the line in boot.ini. That might give you a little more information to work with.

Example:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /d

i have found that u have to install win 2k first on the d drive and then win xp on the c drive and then add:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

to your boot.ini

if u have different disk, ull have to change disk number instead of partition number
