I figured i would make a thread showing my latest car project..a 1982 Mustang GT. This car is a bit unique..it was the first year they brought the 302 Back, and it has a unique front bumper that i fell in love with. Car was $1500 and came with a 302 that runs..but i think we will be replacing her :) I will keep this thread updated! Comments welcome. Here are some before pics to start you off with, just as it was delivered to me.

Heh. You should make an xtreme go-kart out of the 302 if it runs well.

86 and 87 had the best factory heads, right? What year was the switchover from speed density? I can't remember if it was 87 or 89. Can't wait to see your pics man. I'll be following this thread for sure.

Well it will be an 87 motor paired with an edelbrock performer RMP intake and a holley street avenger 650 carb. 87-92 had the best heads. And they were also 225BHP stock w/ 9.2:1 Forged pistons all wrapped up in a roller block :D So she should be a beast!

350 is a chevy engine :P I wouldnt say its better....they are both really strong and reliable engines, 350 is easier to get power out of because of its larger displacement and the plethora of aftermarket parts avaliable for it.

302 isnt bad...what I dont get is when Ford switched to the newer bodystyle in 94 why they put a less powerful engine in it?

Brock Landers
08-19-2005, 09:32 PM
It was a modular engine that coudl be fit into more vehicles. One engine for many vehicles = less cost to Ford's engine division. And, they didn't switch to the 4.6 until 96. The 4.6 has come a long way since it's debut, it's now capable of meaking some healthy power thanks to the aftermarket. Having said that, nothing sends chills up and down my spine like the sound of a mean, stroked 306-347 through off-road h or x pipes and good mufflers. It just sounds mean.

CaTalyst.X

Once the 4.6's came with the Pi heads they became alot stronger. Also they are better for DD because they are OHC as opposed to OHV.

As for updates..the wheel center caps came in today, they are perfect! 88 Rear Quarter glass is on the way, the carpet has been ripped out as well as both front seats, center console, and back seat. The center console and back seat are both in great shape! The coin tray is missing a tab and the shifter bezel 2 tabs, but thats nothing a little epoxy cant fix!

However...there is a major crack in the drivers side floor panel that is about 6 inches long and goes from the edge of the pan towards the center of the car. It will need to be welded and backplated before the new carpet can go in. Off to the junkyard tomorrow to steal a bunch of mounting screws for the interior stuff from an 83 mustang.

Have yet to pull the engine, got caught up on the interior :D I scored some kenwood door speakers from my sisters old honda, so now all i need is a head unit for a temporary sound system :D Ill take pics once i vaccum all the crap out of the inside of the car :D

ok, ford engines: 281, 289, 302, 331, 351. those are the newest.
chevy engines:305, 350, then they got this 6.0L idk what the cubes are.

CaTalyst.X
08-20-2005, 10:44 AM
Litres x 61.03 = ci displacement.

Ford is more like 281,289,302,306,331,347,351,390,400,408,

6L is approximately 366ci

306? 347? 390? 400? 408? how old are those? damn i wish i new that equation before. i was trying to figure it out but never got it. btw, 400? buick had that, are u sure ford did?

^^^ Prolly dont haven enough coin to purchase a real good EFI setup

Brock Landers
08-22-2005, 04:25 AM
If I had the choice and a car old enough to legally do it, I would go carbed. EFI is nice, it's reliable, tunable, yadda yadda. But, there's just something about the sound of the secondaries kicking in that really lights my fire. I think that alot of the problems people have with carbs stem from trying to over-carb their engines. A stock 350 or 302 doesn't need a 750 Double Pumper on it. Put the right size on it, jet it properly and enjoy the sounds and sharp throttle response.

CaTalyst.X
08-23-2005, 03:19 PM
I could do EFI but then I would need the computer out of a 1987 Mustang and i just dont want the headache, plus like Brock said, most people try to overcarb the engines and it ends up bogging them down, the right carb and intake tuned correctly will be just fine for eating some ricers :D Although coin was a consideration too seeing as how good intakes etc would cost me upwards of $1000 and i can get a complete carb setup for around $700

mnew - 306, 347, 408 are strokers, 390 and 460 werent that old...not any older than a 302 :D And ford used a small block 400 in trucks.

The '87 GT uses a larger Clutch than the '82 GT. 10.5" vs. 10" if I remember correctly. I have an '85 GT out in the garage I swapped the larger 10.5" flywheel and clutch into cause I burned up the 10 incher and didn't
want to :banana::banana::banana: with it again.

Looks like a cool project.

You better get rid of the 3 speed manual w/ OD. SROD 4 speeds are horrible.

If you need parts for that car, PM me, I have extra stuff laying around.
