My brand new mobo (dfi lanprty ultraD) just died (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=70995)

One of the possible reasons could of been that cheap, generic 350W psu.
or could it? :slap:

So I am now looking for a replacement.

Erricson? er... EMERSON? Antec? OCZ? "Silent-turbocool"?

I think I need a 400W+ one, to last me, these guys are in the $100 range...

but which one?!
I want power (for a while, make it last til' 2009)

And also I want silent, well, quite at least.

And I dont want to pay $100, but if there is no other way, tell me why I must.

:fact:

Get OCZ 420ADJ... it is around 90 bucks.
Good support + more than enoigh power.. for less than 100..
what more can you ask for?

Fortron AX500-A

Personally I'd go for the OCZ 420, but I don't have a clue about the noise, my second choice would be a Tagan 480, over here they're a bit cheaper (~€76 for the Tagan vs €100 for the OCZ) and they're quiet...even under full load.

BTW: You should be more precise when you say DFI Ultra-D, AFAIK there are 2 flavors...nF3 and nF4 ;)

The OCZ Powerstream will run rather hot if loaded heavily because it uses an 80mm fan that spins slowly enough to be quiet.

The Fortron AX500-A would be perfect for that rig and can be found for a little over $70 at ewiz. Don't be worried about the Fortrons rating of 15A x 2 either. Fortrons are known for routinely exceeding their specifications.

Never used an OCZ myself, but lovin the new Seasonic S12 range, so recommend you check them out, especially if noise is an issue for you

I'm very happy with my Seasonic S-12 600W PSU -- $132.50 @ case-mod.com (http://www.case-mod.com/store/seasonic-s12600-s12-series-600w-600-watt-atx-power-supply-91405-p-1580.html).

XCLIO 480 W (basically an antec at a cheaper price)

Antec NeoPower 480, cant hear it (120 mm fan), modular (no cable mess), and a bunch of "fan only" connectors...fans start automatically ....

I forgot to mention that the OCZ and Tagan look very similar (Except for the adjustable rails), maybe they come from the same factory...have a look at the review over at MadShrimps (http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=187).

OCZ and Tagan do indeed come/came from the same manufacturer. In other words Topower :D

I would take either OCZ Powerstream 420W (it is really quiet) or Tagan 480w.

Neopower is good/quiet but costs a bit more than $100

modular (no cable mess)
All the resistance I want is from the cables, no extra resistance from crappy connectors that may screw with my voltage is wanted (I only use decent gold plated connectors for my RC stuff), hell if you're really extreme you'll get rid of the connectors and solder them to whatever device that needs power
**EDIT**Not sure why I said that, probably has a reason which isn't important (Otherwise I'd remember it...only thing I can come up with is least resistance). Oh well I'm drunk :toast:

I wasn't sure, most likely the OCZ 420 and Tagan 480 are the 'same' but the power rating is different (Peak power for the OCZ 420 is 500+W if my memory serves me well, and Tagan may have chosen to rate it somewhere inbetween....just a thought).

What about Enermax Noisetaker Series (420-530watt) are they good for oc ?
for this system spec:
DFI LP UT nF4 Ultra
3000+ Venice
1GB Low Latency ram
Geforce 6800 Ultra
2 WD Raptor
6 Led Fans

and HEC 420Watts what about them ?

Squid_Spit

Yes the Enermax noisetakers are all decent psus, but i wouldn't know about the HEC.

another vote for seasonic s12's

ocz's powerstreams are pretty noisy and since they advert them as being "ultra-silent" i cant imagine that they saw a reason to make the 420 even more silent.
fortrons ax500 is more silent but not exactly what i'd call quiet.

If you want something to last until 2009, a PC Power and Cooling Turbo Cool 850 SSI (what I have) might just fit the bill! But the problem is the bill, about $450-$500.

Just my opinion.

Get the Fortron AX500-A instead of the Enermax.
