View Full Version : Food coloring as an additive?

I've read here a while ago that food coloring can be added to loops to change color. Is this true? I'll have a small concentration of zerex in my future loop to prevent alge growth (all copper loop) and if I added some lets say white food coloring, enough to make the water turn white, would it hurt anything?

It's vegetable based die, so it will penetrate metal surfaces and stick over time. It's usually in an alcohol suspension, but sometimes it's OIL (and that would suck farts from dead seagulls). I would experiment on something really crappy you don't intend to keep before I would try it myself...

somebody else asked about whitening their water once

K suggested using a water-based de-greaser, as they go milky white when washed off with water, so the same should happen for you here

why do you need color in an all copper loop?

Food colouring is usually particles suspended as the Ugly guy says.
So it will stick to your pump and blocks and might reduce performance a little.

Also as its food die its unlikely to prevent algie groth as its not poisonous.. it might even feed the buggers..

Best bet is a little splash of glycol antifreeze, even a little bit will make it very hard for algea to grow in your water.
