View Full Version : Nvidia Power of three?

Hey. www.Nvidia.com

Towards the bottom there is an advertisement which tells us something called the "Power" of three will be released on August 11th. As we already know from the Inquirer and other various sites, the 7800GT is coming on the 11th. Do you think this has anything to do with that advertisements? What could the "Power of three" be. The main guess in my other favorite forums is that they will release the 7800GT and another lower end 7800 model, and the 7800 Vanilla perhaps, 7800GT, and 7800GTX could reign as the "Power of Three"? :confused:

The video card reviewer over at [H]ard|OCP's forums said that wasn't it. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Odd. We already know the 7800GT is coming on the 11th though... :confused: :confused:

He knows what it is but isn't telling (damn NDA). So bascially he is sitting back laughing at the guesses people are coming up with.

How about the 7800 Ultra?
Would it be "the power of three" because:
1) The 7800 Ultra may be 3 times faster than the GTX with all the pipelines, higher clocks, and 512 mb?
2) Could it be the 7800 GT + 7800 GTX + 7800 Ultra = "The power of three"
3) Could it be that they are planning on releasing a 3 card SLI solution? (Less likely to me)

i think its the 7800u and 7800gt launch there you have the power of three.

http://forums.firingsquad.com/firingsquad/board/message?board.id=hardware&message.id=42089

(Granted, this is rumors, but makes sense ^)

G72 = 7600gt (16 pipes, woot for budget buyers)
G72GT = 7800gt (20, pipes, 7 vertex shaders)
g70 = 7800gtx (already available)

The higher end product will come around R520's launch at end of August. So in essence, comparing to last generation, right now they have the "6800gt" on the market, the "6800nu" and "6600gt" will launch on August 11th, and the "6800U" part will come right around the time of R520, whatever it may be...32 pipes or just a higher clocked GTX. If you think about it, this makes sense. It allows Nvidia to scoop up the mainstream market before ATi releases it's whole line-up which would cover high-end (R520) mainstream high-end (rv530) and mainstream (rv515) on the same date, presumbabley in a few weeks.

power of three: High-end (GTX), mainstream high-end (78gt), mainstream gamer (7600gt)

Nvidia's marketing gameplan for the GF7 series has been amazing with how they are releasing their cards. If you think about it, they're scouping up every cent they can out of it. Releasing very high-end first, then the slower but still high-end later. Surely we'll see a 7200 even further in the future, and a faster card than R520 to counterpunch at the high-end if nvidia is capable. They've covered their bases marvalously, being reserved where need-be to have a product that can overtake R520 when released if possible, and to have a mainstream card available before ATi does, but after they've juiced their high-end for all it's worth.

That's what I was thinking. Dang! SLI with 3 cards! Those moneymaking nuts.

Chris Ray of B3D and Gibbo of OCUK has posted that it's not hardware related, meaning 3 cards, 3 card SLI, or a 3gpu card, meaning of course we were all wrong, although all the cards we mentioned are coming soon (and 7800gt is launching that same day, who knows about 7600gt and 7800u)

It's assumed by some it's multi-threaded drivers considering Chris Ray mentioned someone in the b3d thread guessed right, and that was basically the only non-hw guess. IE: 2cpus + 1gpu = power of three.

Or not...

ok...Power of 3: SLI, HDR, SM 3.0

Three things ATi doesn't at this moment have.

It's just marketing, that's redicilous.

Couldn't it also be say using the power of dual core along with a gpu?

Then again maybe its a feature like turtle said

In the end, I hope it makes gaming more fun with more eye candy features :)

HDTV, HDR, Hardware rendering. The power of three.

High definition gaming....on your 60" HDTV.

Includes the 3-way communication of 2 gpu's, and an nvidia SLi chipset, for the second three, and SM3.0, for the third 3. The power of three.

Heh there we go. The power of three is a marketing campaign in which nvidia touts its superior featureset over the competition. A campaign aimed to promote, SLI, HDR, and SM 3.0...

P.S. ...There definately are some new products on the way. And its not just the 7800GT. But the Power of Three is unrelated to them.

Chris Ray knows his stuff, so i'm taking that as the word.

We will see 7800gt, 7600gt, 7800U, and C51 soon though.

and how much are these cards expected to go for?

NFI, or even specs for that matter, but i'd just assume it will be ~$600. Then perhaps the gtx at $500, and the GT at $400 (ie ultra, gt, and nu)...and the 7600gt somewhere substantially lower, prolly where the 6600gt debuted, if not slightly more. It itsself is rumored to be 16pp...so it could be a great product itsself. A 7600 product (prolly gt) is rumored to supposed to be out before end of August, and the ultra is slated for either late August or early September...It's obviously poised to take on R520.

Naw, I speculated like everyone else..18 guesses shouldn't count, just like the inq, I was bound to be right once. ;)

Once Chris Ray confirmed it though, that was pretty much the end of that. The editors of B3D and such know much more than the rest of us, they're just under NDA. When they speak though, we outta listen...as they like to drop hints. ;)

Two words for this Power of 3... weak sauce.

turtle

One word:

Agreed.

7800GT looks pretty formidable though, especially when peeps figure out how to unlock the pipes. Even without them, they still look like a damn good $400 card...For this week. No doubt waiting for what ATi has is a good idea though...as i'm hearing 32pp-XT/XTPE and 24pp-PRO HDR SM3 Crossfire like a mo-fo. Where will the "power of three" be then?

It's stupid to advertize this marketing when ATi will have the same within a month...I also think anyone with common sense will wait out both product lines and see what best suits them once the whole GF7 and R520/30/15 series is launched.

Well that and ATi cards can do a form of HDR.

turtle
08-11-2005, 02:48 PM
Yeah, I assume you have you those tests where they use the x800 series with HDR with the SC:CT patch? It can use HDR, but it kills the hell out of it's frame rate (+HDR = - ~1/3 frame rate at high rez). I personally wouldn't even plan on trying to use it with my XL, and x800xt/850xt might get by by the skin of their teeth into playable settings...But I wouldn't really count on it as being practical until the R5xx gen.

So the whole point was to show this:

Now you can say: "Sex sells"
They release this to distract you with nVidia, and blind you from ATi
lol :D
