Hello.

I'm going to reformat soon, and I want a better partition system, the current one I have isn't good.

"C" = OS (WinXP), Program Files
"D" = Backups

I've just wanted to know how do you guys/gals partition your HDD's.

Thanks in advance.
Regards.

It really depends on how many HDs you have and how fast they are. I have my C on my 36Gb Raptor which has the OS and common apps. Then I have D on a 120GB SATA that just has programs. Then I have a 200GB SATA split up that stores MP3, ISO, and stuff for my job (IT).

What is your current setup not doing that you would like it to do, and what drives will you be using?

Create your partitions when you first setup drive (ex: First installing OS, or adding a storage drive).

If you need to change partitions after installation, partition magic or another resizing program of your choice can change the partition dimensions / drive letters.

Ideally as Orange stated i like to keep my OS (primary drive) seperate from my storage drive (on a different bus, ex: ide1 for OS drive and ide2 for storage or on a different controller all together).

C: (30GB)
-Windows
-general Program Files (e.g. MS Office, firefox etc)

F: (250GB)
-Pagefile
-Downloads,
-Installers,
-ISOs (Games, OSes etc)
-Movies/Vid Clips,
-Installed games (e.g Program Files directory but only for games as many are fine to keep installed here if i format C: and reinstall windows

G: (80GB)
-Personal Documents
-Music

What is so wrong with your current partitions? I think that is the best option.

C: OS
D: games
E,F,G,H: storage
K: OS testing/benching

OS, applications, games, pagefile etc. should all be on the same partition to reduce seek times which is everything in HDD performance.

i am really against partitions for anything other than asthetics, which is a shame because it eats up some free space. personally when I redo my windows install, i prefer to have a clean drive, not just a c partiton clean with junk all over d/e/f/etc, which may or maynot work right again with windows. obviously i use very few apps so its not a big deal for me.

all my personal files music images movies backup documents go to network storage. this is why i like small hdds, and would freak out if a company would ever make a 20-40GB sata300 16MB NCQ 10,000 rpm drive. :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: :slobber:
