Getting ready to do the mods on my r9700.
Xbit did a mod to the regulator under the silver metal plate. This mod was omitted in your details...
Is it worth doing? Is it neccesary? I'd rather take you guys' word for it than do some unknown mod...
I just want about 470/420, pelt cooled ;)

Yeah charlie, I asked this last night in the other thread....... hoping to find out if it will make a difference myself. I even asked over at that forum.

Hey Muzz,
Let me know what you're gonna do...I want to do the mod this week! Are you getting ready to do yours or did you already do it???

I did the mod from here, then saw the other mod with the added vddq resistor( under the heat spreader). I just want to know if it is more beneficial to do that mod also.... if it is I have no problem adding that resistor ( if that is the correct value).
Let me know how ya make out charlie.

Happy Holidays

xbitlabs forums are horrible for questions about their articles, maybe some here can still help

I did that Mod underneath the Heat Spreader last... I did the 2 other mods first. Everything was going great until I decided to do the 3rd mod. Well, when I went to boot up, the card was showing all kinds of nasty colors, lines etc etc.. I guess I fried it.. Everything was done perfectly too.. IMO, I would really do it if its not necessary.

Wow Looks like xbit labs is going to responsible for killing alot of cards.
Dont do the 3rd mod that high you will bake your ati:)
Just a word of warning:)

I did all 3 mods and I had to remove them shortly after. I thought I fried another card. As soon as it would post the whole screen was just artifacts. I definately don't recomend doing that mod.

My take on this:

I have a rev 3 9700 Pro but so far I've only done the Vgpu mod, as the memory runs up to 371Mhz with stock voltage. The stock Vmem on THIS card is 2.78v....much lower than my rev1.2's 2.91v. When I do the mem mod I will only do the standard mod...not the 3rd one under the heat dissipation plate. It seems to me that that regulator was under the plate of the first 2 rev's of the 9700 Pro and it was not necessary to put a resistor on it to have success. Once I'm back to using the 9700 Pro after having some fun with the Siluro Ti4200 OTES I'll do the mem mod and let you know if it still works as it did on the older rev's of the card.

maybe you can help me, I can't get anyone to tell me where to read the voltages on the card...

Ok...let me take a pic a post it for you my friend:)

Here are the measurement points for the 9700 Pro

thank you very much! Reading 2.8 for the mem and 1.51 for the core. I can only get a 335/335 clock. Too bad I only have set resistors laying around.

You are correct i just checked the Vmem 0n my new 9700 p and it also is 2.78. that sucks! I guess ATI got tired of us doing the Fry and Cry.:)

ive also got the rev 3.0 9700. MAXIMUM air overclock with stock cooling is 370/360, higher gives too much artifacting and lockups running 3dmark. i put on a new GPU cooler, now it gets up to 420 into windows, able to use anything NON 3D that i want, but once i start 3dmark, it freezes before it even starts. the back of the PCB where the core is barely gets hot though, a lot less than stock cooler and core at 370. no sinks for RAM, yet. sounds like that core needs more juice ;) anyway hopefully it can be confirmed by those more knowledgeable than i that the Vmods work for this rev of the 9700 before i go and kill it :(

I want to ask what kind of cooler is the "new GPU cooler"? After my attempt at CPU pelting and two dead xp1700 I feel like giving it a miss to pelt my 9700 pro. I recon I have the experience now to get a solid fit but having a pelt act up by not wanting to start and then shut off mid- game, I don't trust them anymore. Just wondering if there is a more effective cooling solution available than the stock ati fan. I havent even tried reseating it and making sure its got proper contact yet. It doesn't get hot though.

by "new gpu cooler", i meant a different one than the stock ati cooler. its a TT volcano 6, not a huge huge HSF but its doing the job...all thats left is to warm the damn HSF up with some Vgpu mods :D

I took a look at this and now I want to get a gpu waterblock!

The top spot on the orb is occupied by someone using watercooling on the 9700pro.
