What watt?

What watt soldering iron do you use to do mods on a motherboard/vcard/etc? I have a feeling the 9 dollar iron I have in the garage is going to be to hot.

uhm.. 25W or less I suppose, the point here isn't how cheap it is (though some of the expensive ones have Temp. meters and stuff which might help) but how sharp the point of the iron is!

And your soldering skills mater the most, of course. If you don't have "straight" hand, you won't do any good the HW you will try to solder ;)

i use a 25/30 watt one.

Hakko 936 solder station - adjustable to 900 degrees F. Makes life a lot easier than if you have cheapo. I swear by my hakko.
