Alright its time to buy my sweetie (girlfriend) something for her birthday and I was thinking of a laptop. She has one now thats an ancient P2 200mhz machine, and can't really do anything well anymore.

I'm sort of new to laptops and I want to know the difference between:

Mobile Athlon 64
Turion 64
Athlon 64 (this one is obvious, but just listed it because it seems to be the 3rd choice)

I am going to be getting one that can game so I want high end graphics. I've seeen mobile Radeon 9700, is there any better yet?

Also will get a great screen, pretty much a fully featured notebook.

If anyone can clue me in to the difference between the processors and which is better, also if anyone has any recommendations on notebooks that would be great. I'm going to be shopping around.

Intel Dothan 760 and Nvidia 6800 Ultra on board - DELL Inspiron XPS2 - $3500 (http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/cto_inspnxps2?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs) :slobber:

Ultimate gaming notebook but only If you have deep pocket :D

I think the Turion 64 is the best. Uses lot voltages, has low temps, and has a awesome peformance.

Also try to get a laptop with a mobility 6800 Ultra or x850xt. I dont remember which of the 2 was, but one of them has more pipelines.

I dont know much about notebooks, but the Voodoo and Alienware laptops seem to be the best, but they are quite expensive.

go to

Wow money normally isn't an issue but my pockets aren't THAT deep

I didn't know they had graphics like that either. I would think something around a 9800 in power would suffice.

The less powerful are usually have a longet battery life and are less heavy, so if a 9800 is enough then go to the cheaper or lighter models

It would be better to get a mobile 6600 GT tho

Not bad, that x700 might leave a little to be desired in the graphics area though. Also i havent heard much on acer, you may want to read some reviews of their other products to get a feel for the company (unless you already know them).

The other Acer model has the Intel Pentium M:

And I thought the X700 was better than the 6600?

Looks like a nice notebook.
The x700 is about a 9800 but PCI-E
Puting a 3D Ferrari logo on the back of the LCD looks a bit stupid to me  , but looks good anyway

Aparently people like the notebook in newegg and in other sites
That could be the best Turion notebook to get.
If not, Pentium M notebooks are good also

NewEgg only offers notebooks with 6600 and x700 as the top grafix cards. You are better off with a x700, so the ACER notebook is the better choice.

If there are other sites or companies with better notebooks, it would be best recomended by a notebook espert :p:

Ive only seen / had two notebooks.
Where my dad works, they give him the laptop he needs. He had a Dell Inspiron and it looked cheap and was kinda crappy. I think the HDD or the mobo died.
He wanted a new notebook (which his work would pay) so I made some research and got him a HP laptop (dont remember exactly what model or CPU was ordered for it)
Hes been using it for about 2 years, and no complains. We only had one problem which was that the mobo died. Customer service sucked. Took forever to send it back to HP for repareing. Other than that, its a excelent notebook

Indeed, Voodoo and Alienware are Xtreamely expensive :D

Only for people with really deep pockets. The best Voodoo laptop with a grafity and everything can easily go over $5k. Try it yourself. Try and costumize a Voodoo, and look how prices go skyrocket.
Alienwares are like a Voodoos but a bit cheaper and not so goold looking

I think the Acer Ferrari laptop is fine.
A custom laptop from cyberpower and abs could go more expensive for the same specs.

IBM makes some really light laptops, but specs are crappy and the laptops are a bit expensive

Alienware Area-51 7700

P4 560j
2x512mb DDR2 533MHz
Intel 915p chipset
Go 6800 Ultra 256mb
Hitachi 60Gb 7200rpm
24x10x24 CD-RW / 8X DVD
Audigy 2 ZS (Buy some nice headphones for it)
Internal Wireless 802.11b/g miniPCI Card

Total = $3,593.00
Main in Rebate = -$500
Final price = $3,093.00

The notebook is fine and everything, the biggest problem is the Intel chip. The 560j s**ks so bad that even the A64 3000+ beats it in gaming. Not even the 570j can beat the A64 3000+

Though i know you guys will hate this....get her a Powerbook! They can game too...! Games like BF1942, UT2004, WoW, CoD, Zero Hour. And you get wow pretty Mac OS X and a RISC cpu.

I would say $2k is about the upper limit, I will need money for my own set of goodies this holiday season as well...(like 2xR520s, A64 X2, ATI board)

I'm really eyeing that silver Acer with the Pentium M / 1gb / X700...she really loves that color too :p:

Why not the Acer with the AMD Turion?
Since you said gaming, AMD will be better for that.

If she likes the color and stuff, then just get the Acer Pentium M

When you get your laptop, would be nice to see a small review or coment on it so poeple here can get a good Idea of a good laptop

It was my understanding the Pentium M 2ghz and the Mobile A64 2ghz were pretty equal performers?

Every day I pass by this thread, and every time I see the title I always think "Is there really such a thing as a gaming laptop?"

By the way Soulburner, what's that a picture of in your siggy?

i think is doom3, and yes there is such thing as gaming laptop they are inefficient in every aspect like battery and gaming power but you can play certain and that is why they called gaming laptops and charge premium prices

i always go apple for laptops but theyr really not much good for gaming unless you LOVE halo.. or want to install linux on them, powerbooks look so sweet though and MAC OSX is so relaxing to use.
