View Full Version : Sig Sizes - PLEASE READ BEFORE CREATING SIG'S

As I have noticed alot of signitures being made in the photochop forum are larger than the allowed size by XS rules I felt it neccesary to post a little reminder to those who are making sigs for people.

Here is a quote from the rules and regulations

"The entire signature including all orb links, system description and pictures shall be no larger than 250Hx550L pixels."

So please remember to keep the sigs, in its entirety at or BELOW this size.

Also, if you see any sigs that are out of size, please send me a PM and I will take care of it.

Just thought I would add in, this also includes the D2OL sig images. So with the D2OL image, your sig image shouldnt be very large at all. Going by rough estimates, with the D2OL image, the maximum any other image could possibly be is 125high by 550 wide. A Rough estimate.

i though we might could stretch that rule a bit - may the force be with us.

lol just kidding you are right to large sigs are anoying acually i think my current sig is already a bit too big

Well, I guess that size must be pretty lenient rule considering the the two agreeing responses have sigs that are in my opinion way too large.

edit: By the rule being lenient I do not mean it is being broken by these members, just assuming those are in spec the "allowed" size is pretty damn big. Bigger than that, wow must be a few members.

this doesnt include only text sigs does it? What would the point of that be, sure we dont want to be reading a half a oage of someone's sig but text is very small and easy and quick to render. There is not a maximun file size either?

pete, both of the so called offending sigs are just at regulation, though i still think the 250 height limit should be reduced to 200.

teen, as stated in very large letters, the size rule is ALL of it, including the text and the pictures.

maximum file size will be implimented soon on the server side. Its still up for discussion but 200kb or lower is what it will be.

i think tbh we shud introduce a EOCF style sig rule

pictures shud be where the hieght of the pic shud be 150 max, and the lenght of it no longer than the width of the forum

meaning you can have all texts you ant below it without "breaking" any of the rules

Not a god idea. the large issue with sigs is that they cause excessive scrolling in the forums which makes threads very annoying to read.

I just send a PM to a member who's sig was alll text but covered a third of my screen and i am at 1280x960...

IMO even H250 is too much.
Me thinks sig is meant to give the post a bit of personality.
Unfortunately, if you look at an average thread you'll see that ~half of the whole viewable screen does not consist of post contents, but sigs. People put just about anything to their sigs.

"Look i have 4 fans in my rig!"

Limit the max font size used in sigs to 1.
Currently it's only a recommendation. Size 1 should be perfectly readable at any sensible resolution used. But the most bugging feature one can find in a sig are the flicking/annoying animated gifs. I've seen several +500kB gifs animated in dozens of screens...

Here's a good example:
Username Lane-K (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/member.php?u=21107)'s sig (294H x 502L)

- AMD A64 3700+ San Diego@2.9Ghz
- DFI NF 4 SLI-DR (Bios 704-2BTA)
- 2x 512Mo OCZ PC4800 Platinum Rev 1.0 (TCCD)
- 2x 6600GT
- HDD Hitachi SATA2, 2x 160Go Raid0
- Creative SB Audigy
- Windows XP Pro 32 & 64bit.
- Watercooling 1-A Cooling:
- CPU 1-A HV4
- 2x GPU SLI
- 2x Rad. Blacklord 240 4x Fans 120mm
+ Internal 2 Fans.
-PSU Hiper Type R 580-630W

Note the default size text and 657kB (400 x 69 pixels) gif image animated in 145 frames.

Well, Maxxx.... Ur sig is 9 pixels above the height limit :)No its not. :)
MaxxxRacer's sig is about 167H x 678L. It's 128px too wide... :stick:
But it doesn't bother me, usually width is not a problem at all.

some forums have the option to remove sigs from threads

is this possible with XS?

Go to User CP in the upper left of your screen.
Click on Edit options in the menu at the left.
Scroll down to thread display options and pick your poison.

Actually my sig isnt too wide.. make ur browser window 400 pixels wide and you will see what i mean.

Text is not considered for width, only the images. I also judge the height of a sig that has text via 1024 width screen to see how high the text will wrap. I use this as it is the base setting anyone using the forums will ever use. If you are using 8x6 or 6x4 then you must be using a ssytem without ur drivers installed.

largon, thanks for the link to that user. His sig is getting removed. 650kb sig pic is rediculous even with most of us having broadband.

I dunno, but I see people with sigs that take up like half the screen. Instead of having pics in their sigs, they have alot of unnecessary text in their sig about their computers. Tired of scrolling down, but I know three people that I feel have oversized sigs.

Maxxx could you allow the max size for an avatar at 20 KB - and change the 16 KB limit from CP, 20 KB is ok even for a ADSL Connection (like mine :( ), pls... ;)

Thats up to the admin. I thought it was raised again. It got reset back to 16 a while back when the server was updated/reset.

Yeah, that's admin.....and they can't set it per-user, IIRC, just per-usergroup.

Yea that is a setting that hasn't been updated in the control panel since the rule change...... quite some time back. o_O

I will try to get in and fix that soon, bit busy.

If you can find someplace to host it, you can use the [ IMG] tags that way and it won't give you the hassle of the size there.
Or you can wait, but not sure how soon I will be able to get it situated correctly.
Sorry 'bout that.
