Im building a new system for myself, it will be used for graphic purposes and games mainly, so far my shopping list is as follows:

1. AMD 4400+ X2
2. DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR
3. 1x 6600GT (2nd will come when i have funds)
4. What RAM should i get? (or should i use my 2x512 BH-6?)
5. 2x 74gb raptors raid 0
6. coolermaster cavelier 3 case
7. custom watercooling for cpu+gpu(s)

i hope to run win 64bit on it at some point, when the time comes. will it be compatible? any recommendations?

Why are you spending $650+ on a chip but only getting a 6600GT? Even 6600GT's in SLi isn't that great. If anything, go for a 3700+ or 4000+ SD and a top end card, since it's for gaming, the card will do more work.

x850xt pe + sandy 4000 is a much better choice for games along with the dfi board + some gskill tccd

i suppose aswell if you were gunna go that way you could get a ATI board and later on stick in a second x850xtpe...

who said it was just for gaming.....QUOTE...."it will be used for graphic purposes and games mainly"

Go for this mate

1. AMD 4400+ X2
2. DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR.........GET A ASUS DELUX
3. 1x 6600GT (2nd will come when i have funds)...........CHANGE TO A 6800 GT
4. What RAM should i get? (or should i use my 2x512 BH-6?)........GET SOME OCZ 3200 BH5
5. 2x 74gb raptors raid 0
6. coolermaster cavelier 3 case
7. custom watercooling for cpu+gpu(s)

why would he want an asus delux ?

If he already has BH6 - then chances are he will manage 240+ with some volts anyway.
Otherwise TCCD based for high HTT.
ASUS would need a booster for the BH5 anyway - not a good combination at all topboy.

Change to:

1. AMD 4200+ X2
2. DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR (maybe think ATI AMR setup)
3. 1x 6800GT (X800 if you go AMR ATI rout)
4. use my 2x512 BH-6 and burn them in , also buy some TCCD (best of both)
5. 2x 74gb raptors raid 0 (OTT realy unless you want to move large files)
6. coolermaster cavelier 3 case
7. custom watercooling for cpu+gpu(watercooling is all good)

well this is also a workstation (not just games), i use photoshop & 3Ds max in my studies everyday ...so i want a 4400+ X2 CPU for sure ...

maybe your all right about the graphics card ...i didnt want anything too expensive since G70 is coming out soon, i can grab one of them then.

or if i were to go the ATI AMR route which card?

if i were to keep my BH-6 ...will i get the coldboot problem? or is this just with some.

if u buy an amd x2 i suppose this is with the future in mind right?

cause atm not much software can use ur 2th core

if it is, then i would also buy 2GB of RAM...

im seeing more and more reports that 1GB will be insufficient in the future

gamez with HDR lightning easily need more then 1GB (HL2 new expansion fe)
also windows longhorn will use more then 1GB if u do a lil multitasking with those 3d windows
and the list will prolly alot longer in the near future...

i predict the new generation of gamez will be VERY ram hungry :)

2. -> why asus? Either DFI or Abit will do fine. Asus... I only had not so pleasant time overclocking.

4. -> why? BH-6 most likely will do great.

5. -> I will reapeat this again... I don't condone raiding raptor on workstation. It increases CPU utilization while accessing drive while actual bandwidth gain is marginal. I know as I have played with this before. Screw the benchmark on this one and see real usuage pattern. Raid 1 maybe but not 0.

6. -> some lian-li cases are decently priced (pc-60plus comes to mind around $100). Very good air cooling. If water cooling than chemming case (full tower) is always good choice as well as variant of lian-li full towers.

7. -> Unless volt modding is your game on GPU, water cooling on GPU won't get you much at all.

Bah, dump the raptors and go for some Maxtor 16 meg cache models. Infact, throw three of the suckers into a Raid 5. You get more bang for the dollar.

Theres nothing wrong with a 6600GT for gaming, esp 2 of them. I like having quad monitor support, 4 DVI ports are nice. If he is serious about graphics, he should have at least 2 monitors.

I agree with the ram mentioned. G.skill tccd all the way man. You could save money on a psu. Look at the Silverstone Zeus 650 watter. You may want a larger case.. The cavilers are a bit tiny, esp for watercooling. Lian Li 7077C is nice or the VX series. Theres also silverstones and the famous Coolermaster Stacker.

no i want to keep it all in a midi-case im afraid, i hated my last full tower (it was good, just too big).

OK, i've thought about some of the suggestions and my new shopping list:

1. AMD 4400+ X2
2. DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR
3. 1x 6600GT for now. ill wait for 7800GTX i think.
4. 2x512 TCCD ...BUT WHAT KIND? ill try the BH-6 too.
5. 2x 300gb HDDs
6. coolermaster cavelier 3 case
7. custom watercooling for cpu+gpu(s)
8. OCZ 520w powerstream ...i forgot all about the PSU. my old one wont do i think.

i think its a wise choice on the bigger HDDs ...since those PHD files take up a lot of space are massive sometimes.

does raid 5 only require 3 hdds?

In addition to the multiple RAID functions, the SLI version brings RAID 5 to the desktop with its integrated Silicon Image 3114 chip. RAID 5 is one of the most popular RAID levels, where it stripes both data and parity information across three or more drives, removing the bottleneck that the dedicated parity drive presents and improving write performance.

I use this.. Incase a drive fails, im back in the game without doing a damn thing. I can then hot swap the bad drive with another. I have 4 maxtors, 3 in the box, one on the shelf.. If something happens to one, i add the new one, remove the bad one and rma it. Ive tried this with up to 4 drives, speed was the same. All i got was added space. So i just keep it at 3.

As far as your case goes, your going to find the small case a PITA when watercooling it, esp with multi drives and sli. You may want to reconsider the LIAN Li's.
