A friend recently gave me a 3800+ newcastle 130nm he didn't want. With a Zalman 7700-cu w/ AS5 on a DFI NF4 ultra-d, it's idleing at 45C, and hitting 57C under continuous load. This seems high. What should I be seeing with this combo? Is this normal? Is this _safe_?

Temps seem OK. Nothing to scream about. Try reseating? Follow AS-5 instructions and do a heat cycle
My computer at work place is using 3800+ on A8V and XP120 with mid-speed panaflo. The temp at full load is 53-55@~1.5V. So your temp looks O.K.
Yes, I'm jealous, too....this CPU is not personal.....

I had a 3500+ Newscatle and Zalman Cu7000 , it ran idle 45'C and only 60'C full load at 2.6Ghz 1.66v ( of cource with AS5 ) :slap:
