Well i'm not only gonna use my upcomming Xeon rig as a Cruncher, also as a renderbox, audio editing system, etc. It's gonna be my workstation to say it short.

Now I'm wondering about what OS to put on. there will defenitly be a Gentoo installation (linux :) ) to play around with but not all the programs I use run under linux.

So now I'm doubting between Windows Professional + SP 2
or
WIndows 2003 standart & SP1

What do you think would be better/ faster/more stable to use not forgetting compatibility & ease of use

Thanks in advance for the advice!

I use Server2003 myself now. Only issue I'm experiencing is that Norton Anti-Virus won't install and I cant seem to connect to the "Mshome" network which among other things includes my printer :(

I'll get the latter of the two sorted out soon enough :)

Windows 2003 +1 vote :)

Think it will be a bit more stable, and as fast as XP prof.

Definately use Win2k3 over XP.

2.6.11 is yesterday's news! I've been using Andrew Mortons prerelease 2.6.12 patch for ages, alongside 2.6.11-cko5 (which is Con Kolivas's patchset plus Andrew Morton's patchset) with Gentoo 2005.0 (Stage 1on3 installation, with GCC 3.4.4) for ages. Goddamn fast stuff :) And XFCE4.2 + Gnome apps is teh win! KDE is a overbloated POS, and Fluxbox is too minimal for me, although when I am using an old system, I use X.org's default TWM, or if I have done a new install and don't want a fully blown wm.

EDIT: Oops, Alan Cox + Con Kolivas even, I always get them confused!
