The PSU Has a fuse on it if you know where to look. Scrounge around it for a bit and you could prolly find it.. Although a noise that made your ears ring dosent sound too good fer yer system. Could have been summin else that fried.
Can you post some pictures?

Capacitors can go boom. Pops usually come from over currenting in some chip.

Nah, there will only be one. Once the "critical" bridge (The one that will pop if something would) is broken current isn't going to go though the chip.

i fried a AMD 2100+ once. dumb    me thought i had the heatsink on it. after i turned it on and smell something odd i looked at the cpu and could hear a little crackle noise. by then it was too late. RMA'ed it though. I even told the guy on the phone what i did and he said "i don't care" and sent me a new one. :D
woooooow, i dont know mush about playstations, but im amazed it anything lived through that fireworks show
