I am just curious to see how people partition their hard drives. I recently got a 250GB and wondering if I should keep all as 1 or have multiplule partitions.

I used to have 3 partitions.

One for OSand programs.
One for MP3 and other files
One for backups.

Worked pretty good, as I could mess with the OS partition (even format it) without loosing too much other stuff.

For Linux, I have:

/boot partition (shared)
/ partition for each distro
/home (shared)
And finally a swap partition. But I'm sure none of that config applies to you.

It is best to have as small amount of partitions as possible. This is for both performance reasons and convenience reasons.

The more partitions you have will just increase seek times and if one gets full you have to resize them with a program with Partition Magic which isn't fun.

I myself have 2 partitions. The first one is for OS/Apps/Games etc.. The second one is for storage. TYhis includes my MP3's and many documents. This way if I need to reformat I can just reformat the first partition, reinstall Windows and still have all my MP3's and documents.

So either have just 1 large NTFS partition or do what I do if you feel you want a second partition for backup purposes.

One partition for windows xp ( 5gb)

How do I view where the pyshical partition is on a hard drive?

I brought a second harddrive.
When I recieved it, I first formatted a 3gb partition, and then partitioned the remainer of the drive.
Will the first 3gb be exactlly at the start of the harddisk?
I need to know since the 3gb partition is my pagefile, and want the best performance out of it.

I don't do partitions. 1 x 75 gig raptor and 3 x 250 gig storage :) I guess u could say I have 4 partitions :) As stated before, they just hurt performance, some ppl think they boost performance, which is totally off.

If you had of made a small partition to the start on each of your 3 storage drives and then allocate your page file to all them, it would help performance.
