Firefox has been Frozen !

I d/led a program called HHouse.exe. a haunted house screen saver !

What a mistake !

It put 75 things on my computer that spyware detected and removed!

Problem is it took my homepage in Mozilla Firefox from Google to
xxx.MyFreeze.com !! I can't undo that to save my A$$ !

I've done registry scans and removed the entrys. I've changed the home page numerous times BACK to Google, I've deleted all possible cookies. And still no luck!

When this "Home Page" pops up, they even have the BALL$ to run a banner add saying "Wanna remove MyFreeze from your FireFox browser? Click this Banner ad." They're holding me hostage ??

BULLS**T, I'm not clicking ANYTHING on that website.

Has anyone else had this problem and what is needed to release
my FireFox from that home page ?

thats the catch with 80% of freeware, dont download that **** especially free screen savers.

your best bet would be to reinstall everything, hopefully you have all your important files backed up or on a seperate disk or partition, just reinstall windows or what ever your using if a virus scan doesnt work..

Was running Spybot at the time I installed HHouse.exe .

Ran it afterward and it is the program that caught the 75 intrusions !

But MyFreeze still persists in being home page !

sounds similar to something that happened to me...my mom was surfing the web for Algebra websites and my computer got infected with who knows what. I tryed a few different programs and in the end I had to reinstall everything. Even if I deleted all the entries in the reg, and removed the program (using spybot and just going in and deleting with Explorer)

You could always take the easy way out and format. I do it at least once a month because I get bored trying to figure out how I trashed the OS this time and what files I damaged because I dropped the TRFC too low agian.

Found the cure

DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE IE TO FIX:

There have been several postings about myfreeze.com and the screensaver.
The install of the screensaver is either changing or adding to the "user.js" file, or creating one that resets the homepage.

User.js will override settings in prefs.js

If you did not previously have a user.js we would like to know.

If you had NO prior user.js just delete the file, and reset your homepage to whatever you desire.
If you did have a User.js edit the file with Notepad and remove the entries changing the homepage.

Please post back your findings.

User.js is located in your 'Profile' folder. You can search for user.js to locate. Make sure that show hidden files/folders is enabled as the Profile folder is hidden in Win2K and XP unless you set show all files/folders.

It has recently come to our attention that the Mozilla FireFox Browser has issues with changing the homepage after installing some of our products. Because of this, our IT department has developed a fix for this. The problem that occurred was incurred by an unforeseen design element in the FireFox browser. When a user updates their homepage, FireFox can store this information in one of two places, the prefs.js and the user.js file which is located in the individual’s profile on their PC. When the user downloaded our screensaver and indicated that they authorize the change of their
homepage by leaving the “Make My.Freeze.com your Start Page” option checked, our software updated the user.js file.

The unforeseen design became apparent when we discovered that the user.js file would take dominance over all preferences logged in the pref.js. When the homepage is changed by the user, FireFox would do its part and update the pref.js file. Because the browser failed to recognize the change was made to the user.js file (which takes the dominate in browser
preferences), it would appear as if they failed to change their homepage. The result appeared as if their homepage had been locked to hxxp://my.freeze.com.

A fix was developed by Freeze.com’s IT team. The procedure is detailed below for removing the lines of code added to your user.js file. There are two procedures detailed. The first employs a removal program created by our IT department. This is recommended for most users. The second requires the user to remove the unwanted lines of code without assistance. We strongly recommend using the utility developed by our IT team to prevent undesirable
effects.

To remove My.Freeze.com from your homepage using our utility, please use the following instructions to change your homepage.

1. Download out homepage removal utility from:
hxxp://download.freeze.com/support/startpage_removal.exe
2. Close FireFox and Run the utility
3. Open FireFox
4. Surf to the page you want as your homepage.
5. Click on Tools then select Options from the drop down menu
6. In the General Screen, there will be a section titled “Home Page”. From
here, click the “Use Current Page” button to set your homepage.

If this does not work, you may also try the method described below. Freeze.Com, LLC does recommend that you have a PC Support Specialist present while attempting this procedure as any mistakes may cause undesireable results.

1. Close any open FireFox windows
2. Using Windows Explorer, go to
C:\Documents and Settings\ (user name) \Application
Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\(random letters) .default
3. Open the “User.js” file in notepad.
4. Delete the line that reads:
user_pref(browser.startup.homepage, hxxp://my.freeze.com);
5. Save and close the document, then restart FireFox
6. Surf to the page you want as your homepage.
7. Click on Tools then select Options from the drop down menu
8. In the General Screen, there will be a section titled “Home Page”. From
here, click the “Use Current Page” button to set your homepage.

I down loaded a screen saver that I think was the most beautiful I ever saw. As I started Zone Alarm froze. I was new to it so I kicked it out and the program started d/l ing. I started ZA back up while d/l ing and every alrm it had went off saying I was DL ing trojan horse so I shut every thing down. When I started every thing up again, if I tried to get online, the navigator would go to myfeeze and lock with every browser I had. I eventually had to format and start all over again 'cause no one could make it work.

This might help but it won't get rid of the HHouse thing. Go to run then type "firefox.exe -profilemanager" Then create a new profile and set it up as the default. This might get rid of some problems. You'll have to import your bookmarks and settings back later tho.
