Especially since they knew from the start that they were going to release a 74GB version in a few months.

I'd ask him a picture from the top of the HDD. It'll either say 360GD or 400GD.

I have seen alot of shady stuff about "unlocking" hidden portions of a hard drive so that it is recognized as a larger value.

However, most peopel who have done this confirm that it is indeed recognized as a larger drive, but about 90% of the time they end up getting serious file issues cause the FAT will point to the same location for two different files and stuff like that...

Anyway, looks like all the big guns( 15k SCSI drives ) have hit the 140GB mark, which means you should see a 10k SATA drive of this capacity probably wihtin the next few months, IMO.

Lets hope so, the only thing putting me off rapters is the size, even if you have 2 its still quite small

Yeah I am about ready to sell my raptor actually cause it is BARELY faster than my 300GB 7200rpm Drive.
I have my Raptor in my P4 @ 3.0ghz vs My 2.4ghz Winnie w/the 300GB 16mb SATA drive. The Raptor will beat my A64 machine for level loading by about 2-3secs (and this machine has a 9800pro with 128mb of memory, i have got 6800GT's in SLI, so my system has to transfer like 2-4times the data...)

Anyway, I just don't see the value in Raptors anymore. If you need Speed get the 15k Atlas or Cheetah (you also need a deep wallet).

I sent that guy a message saying that there is no such thing. His reply was that it stated it was 40G in his properties. I asked him to send me a screenshot but no reply yet...lol

The way they are measured are wierd though, All the drives I have had have been slightly smaller than specced, my WD160 only has 148 available.
Always heard it being lower though, never higher.

That's because manufacturers always calculate by saying 1000B = 1KB, 1000KB = 1MB; 1000Mb = 1GB, etc, while you should actually use 2^10 = 1024 instead of 1000.
So when they claim 200GB, you get 2x10^11B = 195312500KB = 190735MB = 186GB, which is exactly what my '200GB' Seagate has. :)

Or, when your manufacturer claims 160GB like your WD160, like this:
1.6x10^11B = 156250000KB = 152588MB = 149GB.

Ditto. I have never heard of them and I doubt they even exist.

Makes a lot of sense, thanks for explaining that, I never really understood it :toast:
