I didn't even realize these were out until I stumbled accross one on newegg. I need a small HDD for my boot & system files, and was wondering how much a performance boost I would get in comparison to a sata 7200. im sure it would be slight if noticable, Is this HD loud when it cranks up? was also wondering if 10,000 rpm would make it more prone to crash, since faster moving parts?

You didn't mention which HD? But I am going to assume you are talking about the WD Raptor.

I have been running one for almost a couple years now and its great. It is not loud, and it is built to be more durable than "normal" hard drives.

I've been running WD Raptors since the 36'ers were first released, and I've been using faster SCSI drives (20k RPM) before that too. They aren't noisy further than the standard "chshhhhhhhh" noise that you get with old 7200 RPM drives (most 7200's are silent these days). You'll definately notice speed improvement, HL2 maps load a coupla secs faster than my SATA 7200RPM WD disk, so yes, you will notice improvement.

I have the 36G Raptors in RAID 0. They are definately faster than 7200's, but the cost / size makes it debateable as to whether it is worth it. IMHO
