I have been think about doing this for a while now, I would like to start to tinker with making a few simple games. Can anyone here recommend a good book, or web site to help me get started. I do not some visual basic, dos, and several plc automation programs.

do you want to write your own engine or just create levels, enemies, graphics, sounds and statistics? There are alot of very capable SDKs out there that are more fun to use than trying to create your own engine.
I once tried writing a clone of the Duke Nukem engine, but got too annoyed with collision detection between enemies and your shots that after a few weeks I gave up.
