View Full Version : Can a baseplate be too thin?

Ok have been trouble with making my gpu cooler. The main reason is the bolts. Taps tend to bind in copper. So here is my new idea. I have 2 DD maze4 gpu blocks. I just disassembled one. I plan to buy copper pipe to fit in the spot where the O-ring was. I would use a small piece probably no longer than 2 inches. This would be brazed right onto the baseplate. I would then have a copper tube between 2-3inches in diameter with a cap brazed on the bottom. Then drill a hole through it so the first piece will slide in and braze it together. My biggest concern is my baseplate the DD one is only about 1/8-1/4 inch at the minimum. would this be a problem? I figured I would transfer even more cooling to the gpu this way.
your base needs to be 7mm - 1cm thick,

just look true some gfx cooler designs.

this shoudn't be a problem or?

1/2" is the best for a baseplate, temps will not swing too much, 7mm is too thin.

The base was only around 1/8 in thick.
Im building a container for this weekend with 1/2 in. base. I'll post the results here. ;)

Well I made a new container for my GPU. I used 1/2 inch thick base with a 2" elbow and 2" X 12" tube. I made dimples on the inside of the base. All in all I am somewhat disappointed. I did gain about 5-10mhz on core and thats about it but I think my GPU is maxed out. Also I am having a bit of a problem getting it to make good contact. I would say a gain of 5mhz. but when I pulled off the container it only made contact with about 80-85% of the core one edge was not in contact. Hopefully I'll find out what was causing it to not touch and get some better results this weekend.
i see you made that 90° container, can you give some pics of the before status and maybe tell how you make the hole to put in the container.
i tried but sawing a hole into a tube isn't that easy, perhaps you drilled it or?

Those are the only ones I took. I may be disassembling my other maze4 this weekend. If I do I'll get a picture of it. It is a square piece of copper with a big circle around the edge. That's where the o-ring sat. In the center of the circle was the danger den maze design. I brazed I think it was 1 5/8' tube into it a small pice maybe 3in long. The tube with the cap brazed onto the bottom I used a drill for the hole. Like these (http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/a/ab/leno/holesaw.htm?L+coastest+pydf4181ffec4dec+1115686821 ) hole saws. It did want to move a little but wasn't too bad. I then used vice grips to set it how deep in the hole I wanted it. Then braze and insulation. About the 90 did you mean this one? lol

the left on is easy to make, and good to insulate.
i won't use the right one, to close to the card:)
tnx about about the centerdrill, i'll maybe buy one.

I liked the idea of the one being close to the card was hoping it would cool my memory also a little extra ;) The hole saw does work very well and if you are planning on trying like that again I recommend using one. The one on the left is what I am currently using but something possibley a chip is holding it from sitting flush on the chip I still need to investigate a bit more. :)
about the memory you should make a problem.
the card freezes completly through.
I used a pelt on my 9600 xt and the mem was freezing also:)

:eek2: What size pelt was it? What was the water temp you used to cool it? Did a 172watt w/ ice water myself but don't think it was freezing. :)
