I have whole rig running submerged in Non-conductive mineral spirits. Im wondering if it would be possible to chill the mineral spirits with DI. I havent been able to find the freezing point of mineral spirits. Right Now its just running at room temperature. The setup is a 5 gallon cast acrylic aquarium with am asus p4c800e-dlx P4 3.0c. Im using a small aquarium circulation pump to give some flow. My idea is to use the pump to run the spirits through tubing through a small cooler packed with dryice. Any idea if this will work????

welocme to XtremeSystems :toast:

i dont know what you mean with spirits ^^

but if you mean minaral oil then it will get very thick at lower temps... depends on what oil your using though...

Would it thickening become a problem tho?? Its a pretty decent cooling system as it sits. Stays within 1 or 2 degrees of room temperature at full load. Im just wanting to go a bit colder for some more Xtreme OC's. Right now its hanging around 70 degrees farenheight at full load. Its a p4 3.0 prescott running stable at 4.0

this is slightly OT....but, i think the next wave of "cooling" is to use non conductive fluids w/ cascade evap coils in the liquid to cool the entire liquid down, and then to have cascade blocks' on the essential microchips.

I dunno. I saw one built like this a few months ago and it just seemed like a good Idea

It wont work because of the caps, there built to run till -50, but with a cascade youll get way below that, someone has already tried that with ln2 and dice, but after 10-15mins it wouldnt boot anymore, because of the caps...
If you could get military caps, which I think can go till -75, then it might work, but im not sure, since some other parts dont like the cold either...

I seriously doubt that a few pellets of DI will take 5 gallons of liquid down below -50

Well depends on what you mean by a few pellets. In bios with a load I am at between -28 and -32. Since the caps don't generate much heat it would be a possibility. If you do try it would be really interesting to see the results. :)

I went out and bought a small styrofoam cooler today and a stronger pump. I have a fairly small radiator im goin to use for this setup also. Here is a picture of the setup i have in mind. Think it will work???

HI, Are you talking about "mineral spirits" that you clean paint brushes in? If so, isn't it extremely flammable?

This is not quite the same thing that you clean Paint brushes with but its closely related. Yes it is fairly flammable. But with 90% of the electrical components submerged im willing to take the risk. It could catch on fire but i have taken a few precautions to prevent that. Im researching less volatile non-conductive liquids but i havent found anything else that will work as of yet.

Awesome man. How were you cooling the oil. And was the stuff you were using flamable??

well it works. no noticable thickening at 0 degrees farenheight. 4.5 ghz stable im gonna use more DI tonite and try to go subzero. Im shooting for 6 ghz.

If your shooting for 6ghz, you are going to need more than just DI. Thry LN2 in a container, and put the containre in the water a little.

Uh... 6ghz? on your 3.0 that means a fsb of 400mhz. You might need a higher multiplier if you want to get anywhere near 6ghz. :)

Even still, all this submersion cooling gets me so excited. :D

yeah looks like im gonna have to switch to the 3.6 for 6ghz. Mid 5ghz is all the 3.0 will handle. and not very stable at that.

Fugger hit 6.3 Ghz on a 3.2. So why the need for a 3.6?

Im not goin quite as cold as fugger. So fart my best is around -10 degrees

ANy updates yet? Sounds like a great project. I am tempted to try something similar- especially since it is so humid down here in Miami...

Anyone knows if there any threat of getting anything too cold on the motherboard - e.g do any chipsets have known coldbugs..

No real updates. Im giving up on DI as the chiller and im raping an old freezer to build a new cooler for my spirits. Im wanting to bee able to keep it fairly cold 24/7. Oh and just to clarify since i got a PM about it My drives are on a small rack above the liquid not submerged. In my opinion this type of cooling beats the hell out of my old watercooling rig. Plus it just plain looks cool.
