On March 29, Intel will ship its Potomac Xeon bundled w/ Twin Castle E8500 chipset codenamed "Truland". This Xeon will have 8MB of L3 Cache and will run at 3.33GHZ. Wonder what the cost is :p:

The Xeon MP line is well designed for its task, which is database management, webservers, and other enterprise applications. Xeon MP chips do not perform well in desktop applications (the huge L3 cache is not of much help in games etc.) and typically cost >$1000/processor.

Basically, unless you have 20K to drop on a Dell server, these are not for us :D

The price will be for one Xeon MP: $3700 (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=21983)

Generally servers that process high request loads from smaller queues/stacks/databases benefit greatly from large caches, SQL/Apache and the like. Scientific modeling sometimes benefits as well.

However, in large databases, the storage I/O bandwidth/latency becomes the bottleneck . . .
