Well here is another project log from me. THis time I decided to build a htpc.
I had a compaq deskpro pc siting around the house so I decided to make that into a htpc but powerwise it was lacking as a pentium 2 333mhz chip wasent going to cut it and me being that I like compaq oem cases from the past. I decided to build this machine up to a decent htpc spec.

The specs are:
Abit bp6 mobo.
dual celeron 533@600 (soon dual p3 1ghz)
384mb of ecc crucial ram (curtesy of my good buddy raj)
Fx5200 modified (pics on this thread)
100mb lan nic
possibly soundblaster live 5.1
hard drive is undecided as curently i have tested a segate 10gb hdd
optical drive will probably be a dvd -rom drive or a cd-burner (havent decided but not both)

and now on with the case

The original case

Now the newface lift on it.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/PDRM0027.JPG

Got rid of the floppy drive holes.

The new mobo and back plate.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/PDRM0029.JPG

this is the fx5200 that I have modified with the old compaq p2 heatsink and spare ram sinks I had laying around.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/PDRM0030.JPG

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/PDRM0031.JPG

Here is a shot of the dualies and the new chipset heatsink I put on. Even tho the original heatsink was extremly small and the new one is huge compared to it, the chipset still gets very hot. This was a big isue with the original bp6.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/PDRM0032.JPG

Here is a shot of my tiny 120W matx psu and the dual chips. Note the psu is mounted directly to the back exaust fan and the fan is mounted to the case. Thats how the psu stays on there. (I will be geting somekind of mesh to cover the large holes I cut on the psu) (also the psu has been sanded and painted black)

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/PDRM0033.JPG

And a back shot of the case now.

The old pci slots.

UPDATE.

Well i finaly finished my psu. After cuting the psu grill out and then cuting a side hole for case ventilation I was left with a bare psu and dangerus holes. So I decided to put a grill on there that was very litle restrictive. And so I cut the grill and glued it on and painted. Well enough talk im going to show pics.

The psu in pices and the left over mesh.

Well I painted some stuff. Note non are on final coat.

The cd-rw drive. My precious tdk 50x.
http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/2nd%20update/PDRM0058.JPG

The top of the case. Not the final coat on it btw. She needs some wet snading.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/2nd%20update/PDRM0060.JPG

The front on its second coat but it needs some hardcore snading where the floppy drive used to be.

Ok guys im updating this one. havent worked on it for a while and its been eating at me to work on it. So today I made some right angled moldexes. Yes I actualy transformed regular moldexes to right angled ones.

Here are the pics.

Here I just striped an old dead psu for its moldexes.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/3rd%20update/PDRM0003.JPG

I drilled through the moldex.

Well I decided that my htpc will also be a server for my games if necesary. (unreal tournament series, quake 3, half life. etc) so I decided to add a built in 5 port 10/100megabit switch and some speakers just in case I want to play music when I take the server with me.

The speakers pictured on the rite are a pair of JBL pro drivers, the mid is a amp riped from a crapy set of speakers and the leaft the crapy speakers that the amp resided in.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4th%20update/PDRM0010.JPG

The craptacular speakers minus one amp.

Now the switch.

Here is a shaky shot of the switch (I apologise for the pic)

A better shot of the switch in place.

Top shot of the switch.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4th%20update/PDRM0017.JPG

PS: The switch will be powered independently from the pc so it will be always on as long as the pc's power cord is pluged in.

Ok I wanted to cut a window in this case so I decided to cut two windows. I had time to only finish the side window tonite, Tomorrow I will cut out the top one as well.

So on with my Pics.

I also made my own HTPC some months ago. The case is from an old, defective Yamaha-Amp. The front is cleaned with synthetic resin filling compound and I cut new holes for the LCD and DVD-drive.
I'm running Gentoo-Linux with the popular VDR software and a full featured DVB-S tv tuner card. The machine is 100% controlled via infrared remote control.

Very good work bro. Nice to see fellow htpc lovers.

BTW most dont know that you DO NOT need a high performance pc to run a decent htpc. A celeron in the range of 1.1-1.4ghz (tualatin core) and some 256mb of ram will do everything you need. I have seen htpc's run flawlessly with meere p2 333chips and a bootable linux distro.

I need more than 1Ghz to play DivX and stuff like that. In order to play divx the system has to scale the movies to PAL resolution and convert it to mpeg so that the mpeg decoder on my DVB-S card can throw it on my TV.

I have played divx and xvid movies on my lil sisters p3 650 flawlesly. Maybe you are refering to the horridly underpowered via chip that runs at 1ghz but barely performs as a celeron 533. A pentium 2 450 should take care of any div-x or xvid movie.

EDIT: I just noticed the card you are using to display the movies. And what I can say is that those cards rely on cpu power to do the processing. Some tv-tuner cards need a powerfull cpu as they relay on the cpu to process video, versus some tv-tuner cards process videos with an onboard chip. Kinda what the old sound blasters did. The older soundblasters processed the audio on card and have very litle reliance on the cpu, thats why you had 386 machines runing full syhtesisers etc, like the onboard sound chip on moder motherboards relys on the cpu to process sound, and you wont find many older motherboards that had onboard sound as the cpu's of that time were not powerfull enough.

Witch brings me to my main worry with this machine. I have a cheep tv tuner card thats really cpu hungry and have yet to test the system with dual 1ghz chips (my friend dean will provide those) and I am worried that the chips wont have enough power to process the demands of the tuner, but on the bright side I can actualy dedicate a chip just to the tuners needs if that becomes a problem.

phobos
03-24-2005, 12:49 AM
You've got me a little bit wrong. My TV-tuner card is not a cheap one. It is full featured, with a DSP that does MPEG-decoding in hardware. So nearly no CPU-usage here. The problem is to convert the DIVX movie to MPEG in PAL resolution in realtime. That is the only thing that eats up CPU power ;). You really need a CPU >=1GHZ to do that. I wanted to take a Via Epia for that but a 1GHz Epia is not powerful enough.

If I would pass on DIVX I could use an old 200MHz PC.

Ok I got a small update going.

I decided to cut out the stripes on my case as I wasent happy with the look.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4-4-05/PDRM0001.JPG

As you can see I also opened some holes on the top, more on the use of em lader in this post.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4-4-05/PDRM0002.JPG

As you can see those holes will be for the speakers I plan on incorporating in the case. As you can also see is the contrast between the ps1 speaker versus the computer sheilded speakers I plan on using.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4-4-05/PDRM0003.JPG

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4-4-05/PDRM0004.JPG

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4-4-05/PDRM0005.JPG

Now I decided to also incorportae a ps1 lcd screen into my mod as I can make it a portable media pc if I need to.
http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4-4-05/PDRM0006.JPG

I cut the speakers out of the ps1 lcd and I am curently bondoing the sony logo imprint on the ps1 lcd case and also the side holes I cut out.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4-4-05/PDRM0011.JPG

The bondo left over, I mixed too mutch I supose.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4-4-05/PDRM0012.JPG

The actual smame cna of bondo I have been using for the last fiew months.
http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4-4-05/PDRM0013.JPG

I also remoded my front as the tube I bondoed and glued on was leaving a slight line on the paint so I snaded it down completly and I will paint it when the weather permits.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brunomartini/images/HTPC/4-4-05/PDRM0007.JPG

The switches will turn on my cathodes and my lcd.

I am also runing out of space on my ftp server so it will be a while till I post an update till I have my hosting needs sorted.

Ok update time

I decided to put some mesh behind the pc for some air flow.

http://server2.uploadit.org/files/jaguarking11-PDRM0055.JPG

Here we have a cleaner shot of the rear end with the switch and mesh in place. I am thinking about cuting a pice of plexiglass to cover the metal tape.
http://server3.uploadit.org/files/jaguarking11-PDRM0056.JPG

The sleeving job I did for the psu.
http://server2.uploadit.org/files/jaguarking11-PDRM0058.JPG

This is the new psu I am working on. I decided that my old psu wasent powerfull enough. So this slightly more powerfull psu (250W) is in the process of being modified to fit the case. I pretty mutch repositioned the rear cable to the front of the psu and I epoxied a pice of metal to the back hole and filled the rest in bondo.

http://server2.uploadit.org/files/jaguarking11-PDRM0060.JPG

This is the home made modular part of the psu with vents ontop as well. I also put in an AC power plug to plug in my LCD psu.

http://server2.uploadit.org/files/jaguarking11-PDRM0061.JPG

This is the LCD psu pluged in.
http://server2.uploadit.org/files/jaguarking11-PDRM0062.JPG

Anyone has any sugestions on how to make this thing better?

Oh and I have decided to use a p4 insted of dual p3's in this machine.

The specs will be as follows
MSI neopl 865based mobo
P4 2.4A (will upgrade to a celeron D or something higher lader on)
a single stick of pc3200 (512mb kingmax) ram
and the hdd will be a 160gb samsung spinpoint
The videocard bwill remain a fx5200 (64bit) yes I know its crap but its good enough for video and web browsing
The psu is a 250w generic psu with 12amp 12v rail (this psu has been proven to run fine with this setup so a better one is not necesary)

I thought the coolest thing about this was the dual p3's, I'm not sure if anyone has ever made a HTPC with dual CPUs (I'm sure that will change with the EPIA DP-310 though). The coolest thing you could put in there would be a DX rig, you could have a HTPC crunch for d2ol and record tv at the same time!

Looks great so far though.

I was thinking about puting in the dual cpu mobo, but im afraid my tv tuner card wont have enough juice to keep it going. My tv tuner card is a pos that needs lots of cpu power. Acording to the manufacturer the card needs at least a 1ghz cpu and 256mb of ram im barely meting the cpu speed if I go dual 1ghz cpu's and barely exeding the ram as I only have 384mb of ram for that mobo. And buying more ram is out the question because ddr ram is cheeper than regular pc100ram or pc133 ram.

So I figured I may benefit from having a p4 based system as that would surely take care of it. But I will run tests to see how well it perfoms then decide.

Well I was messing around with my speaker grills and this is what I came up with.

http://server2.uploadit.org/files/jaguarking12-PDRM0001.JPG

Any sugestions on how to add to the design?

I was thinking about printing out a High voltage logo and puting it in the middle of the wire grills sandwitched between the plastic and the metal wire.

man thats some good craftmenship there i know how hard that stuff is. i think it would possibly be a good idea to buy a all in wonder 9600 with tv tuner built in. that way you get an upgraded graphics and you can use the dualies because those are just too cool. i love the idea of the speakers on that thing good idea. maybe use that lcd to display the tracks playin in winamp as ive seen someone do that before. hey i got that same compusa switch as you. if i was you i would paint it to match the slick color scheme of the rest of the case. black probably
btw awesome job on the psu and molex.

Im sure you already have it in the plans, but it would be a shame if that switch and the molexs werent painted yellow.

@ brandinb
The moldexes will be painted yellow to match the case.

@Rabidmoose171
The switch alredy has been painted with a black and yellow color scheme. Now im wating to buy more paint to give the switch another coat and then a nice clear glossy coat on it too.

The switch plans have changed slightly as it will be mounted externaly on the rite side of the case. Where the switch is in the pics will be two 80mm fans blowing outwards.

Thanks for the encuragement guys.

no update on this project??

I have ordered some parts and I am wating for them to arrive. Mainly the rear fans as I found killer deal on some coolermaster fans that are silent (22db) and only cost me a buck a pice. I ordered some white led and red led fans, the white fans will get some yellow and red leds to give it a matching look.

The switch needs some touch up work before I give it a clear coating and show it to you guys. other than that the projet is nearing completion.

This machine is looking nice, makes we want to go out and start a project similiar to this. Btw are PSOnes that cheap now? And how easy is it to hook it up to a pc and have it show stats or even use it as a small little desktop display?

In any case, amazing work. I can't wait to see the end result :)

Well i bought it off a forum offer. some guy was selling them for that price 30=5shipping. Its fairly easy to hook up. You can use a rca converter to your videocards s-video out or actualy modify the lcd to use vga but thats allot more dificult and needs patience.

AFter you hook it up to your svideo make it a second monitor and use samurise to display things you want to be displayed, and samurise dosent use that mutch cpu power either.

Well sorry for not updating but I hope to finish the case this month and then I have to wait to buy parts for it. I need some ram and a new cpu so it will take a while.

That p3 450 would make a killer server/ mp3 machine/video machine. Just pack it with old ram and a fiew old hdd's and it should fly.
