View Full Version : First impression with Epox 4PEA

Just got mine an hour ago. Here are my first impressions:

- Green PCB - ewwww :p
- rev 1.0
- 12V ATX - the previous one, Epox 4G4A, although was a very fast board, didn't have this so it had quite bad voltages.
- 4 phase power :)
- BIOS and OCing:
Vcore from -0.1 up to + 0.35
Vmem up to 3.2
Vagp up to 2.2 (this is stupid !)
AGP/PCI lock, selectable from 50 to 80MHz AGP.
3:4 divider for 400Mhz FSB CPU and 4:5 for 533MHz CPU.
Usual mem timings.

- Real voltages:

Vcore (stock): 1.488 idle, steady, doesn't move. 1.456 underload, steady, rarely moves. I like that ! The core voltage on the 4G4A and the Asus boards are all over the place.
Vmem (2.6V): 2.656 V real ! Doesn't move at idle. Full load rarely moves. goes down to 2.64 sometimes.
Vagp: 1.52 most of the time, sometimes goes down to 1.504.
+/-5V and +/-12V: stays slightly higher than 5 or 12 at both idle and full load. Almost don't change.

- Performance: no idea :p I'm on a thrashed OS that has been on 4 Intel boards and about 6 or 7 graphic cards (both NVIDIA and ATI :p ).

- OC result with 2.4B..........coming soon :)

Edit: should add that I like this USDM very much :)

Some Sandra mem comparison at DDR 400....(CTL Samsung, 2.75V)

Epox 4PEA: 2.5-2-2-6

http://users.on.net/nlinh/HW/4PEA_DDR400.jpg

Epox 4G4A+: 2.5-3-3-6

http://users.on.net/nlinh/HW/SandraDDR400.JPG

Other boards like BD7-II, IT7, 8PE667 Pro, P4B533-E don't even come close so not worth mentioning :p ( ;) )

Edit: that is 97 or 98% efficiency.

I'm just testing stability and efficiency atm. Will try higher soon :)

I like my 4PEA+ a lot too :)
so far, I've only been able to get 94% efficiency out of my
sammy tcb3, but it's been used so much and even with
high volts, that I think I need some new memory....

my corsair pc3200 c2 is a bad stick, and I've only gotten
90-91% efficiency out of it.....

congrats on those scores :D it's always nice to see some
of that old fashioned epox:intel bandwidth efficiency ;)

BTW, you should do that 3:4 mod, it really works well,
just takes a steady hand...

oh, one more thing, are you running fast cs# and
command per clock with those scores?

GreenBeret

I'm using Fast CS and Command enabled :)

Yeah I will do the 3:4 trick soon. Just bought some conductive silver paint :)

What 3:4 mod guys? Ive got this board on order so chuck me a bone plz :).

Also - either of you happen to know what 3.2vdimm gives in actual volts or whether it can be modded for say 3.4 or even 3.5v?

Cheers,

This 3:4 mod:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5248

The board gives you 3:4 if you have a NW 400 and 4:5 if you have a NW 533.

3.2 Vdimm gives me 3.25. Some say they get higher, but it could be that their PSU's are better than mine (Antec TruePower 430W).

Some more info on voltages.....

I just put a 2.8GHz in with 3 pins connected for 1.825 Vcore default. The BIOS gives me -0.1 to +0.2 Vcore so that's up to 2.025 Vmax. However the max real Vcore I can get is ~1.8V. This might be due to the max Vout from the voltage regulator. This board might need a Vmod to get real Vcore over 1.8....

If you set it to the highest vcore option in the bios
without the vid-pin mod, it'll give you 1.79v...

Just found a weird thing with this board.

If I choose Turbo in DRAM Timings, it will give me 2.5-5-2-2 instead of 2-5-2-2. I actually get better performance at CAS 2.5 than at CAS 2

Anyone have this Epox running in the 170's 3:4 fsb range yet?
My Max2 ver2 is all done at 170 fsb, yet my 2.4b SL6EF is good to about 177 fsb on my original IT7 ver1., but it's sold....so it does me little good..
For some reason, I'm leary of being Epox'ed again...

My IT7 is stuck at around 170ish fsb, which would be ok if I wasn't running a 1.6a. I some how killed this board so I am waiting for my RMA to come back. If the new one won't do it I am gonna try something else. Would be interesting to see what this epox can do as I have had good luck with all my amd epox boards.

I posted this on AOAforums:

http://www.aoaforums.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12555

I have a 4PEA with Dec 04 BIOS. Cooling is Swiftech MCX462 and Delta 68cfm. Last night I was benching my 1.8A at 3GHz and AGP at 80MHz bus. In the first run it was fine. However after I rebooted to bench again, suddenly the performance dropped like nuts  Rebooted and rebooted and rebooted but the problem wouldn't go away :( I noticed one thing: the System temp in the POST screen was 0 while it was about 20C in my room. Anyway I checked with Sandra and.........damnit the CPU's performance went down to a third of what it was supposed to be ! Tried fiddling with the Thermal Throttling percentages in the BIOS and yep it was the throttling that lowered my CPU's performance. I managed to fix it by putting the AGP clock at a slightly lower speed: 78MHz. After I did that, System temp went back to normal, which was about 26C.

Now what the heck do CPU's thermal throttling and System temperature have to do with AGP bus ? :p

Picked this board up yesterday.

As first it nearly went straight back to the shop due to bios bugs (Gate A20 to fast meant no detection of raid array, USB keyboard support meant no detection of raid array and USB mouse support meant no detection of raid array). Flashed to the latest bios though (c04) and all is now well. Still dont get the 4:5 divider with my 1.6a though.

Anyway, this board knocks seven shades of sh*t out of the Max2 v2.0. Im getting 80mhz extra on the cpu, 13 mhz extra on the memory all at identical voltages and timings (actually theyre tighter on the Epox). No OS install yet as it wont boot into my Max 2 v2.0 install (MAJOR bummer), but been testing with memtest.

This board is the fastest and most stable thing ive EVER seen - absolutely incredible.

The 12v line sucks, but doesnt seem to affect stability (11.67v), every other voltage is bang on the money.

Stuck a stick of Corsair PC3202 in it which did 216mhz @ 2.78v on the max2 v2.0 @ 2.78v and maxed timings. In the Epox its now doing 226mhz at identical settings but faster timings (tras 5 instead of 6) with every option set to turbo or aggressive.

Memory performance is up noticeably according to memtest over the IT7 Max2 v2.0, and my wallet is substantially happier.

Epox have somewhat redeemed themselves in my eyes now, thats 2 absolutely cracking boards theyve produced in a row (4PEA+ and 8RDA+) - theyve certainly shown abit how its done.

Gonna leave everything bedding in using memtest for a few hours then get an install of XP on it.

Superb board m8 - just maxed the FSB though. 200 aint enough ;).

Memory voltage wise it seems like 3.1 is the sweet spot - 3.2 causes errors on 2 different sticks ive tried now.

You should be seeing some benches well over DDR500 when windows gets put on this afternoon. Ive not messed with AGO voltage - never found it to make any difference. Not tried with an R9700 though.

It really does need flashing to the c04 bios straight away to get rid of the bios bugs.

CPU voltage wise my 1.6a is happy at 2.83ghz using 1.525v in the prometia. May get some more out the 2.8a in this. If I can hit 180FSB with it I should be getting some MASSIVE bandwidth.

Windows install commencing in 90 minutes or so after Sunday Lunch :).

Hope you enjoy your xmas present Macci ;).

[Edit] BTW macci - agp/pci at 30/60 to 50/100 in 1mhz steps fixable at any FSB speed. Should come in handy with the radeon.

Interesting. My 4PEA (non Plus) only has AGP up to 80MHz.

Btw my rails rock ! 12V is 12.1 with a 430W Antec :) I believe for OCing the non Plus is better. I don't want the onboard crap (Raid and stuff) to hold back my OC :p

Glad to see that you're happy with the Epox :) Mine is the fastest I've owned (on par with my previous 4G4A+): Abit BD7-II, IT7 (845E), Gigabyte 8PE667 Pro and Asus P4B533-E.

Doesn't seem to like my Sammy 2700 at all. The max I've been able to run thru PiFast is 223MHz :P And thats w/ every possible mem setting set to slowest possible value.
Put the IT7MAX2 back in and running at 234MHz cas2.5-7-2-3 enhance again.

CPUFSB obviously works w/ this mobo too and I might give it another go and see how far I can push the FSB using 1:1 mem. CPU OC wise it seems to be identical to my IT7MAX2 (=almost as good as my P4T533-C).

My 4PEA+ has worked for about 11 days before the voltage regulator blew. At least, I am being told that it is a voltage regulator.
If have made a picture of it and outlined the chip that died. It's the flat black thingy and people say it is a voltage regulator.
At least that explains why my VCore dropped about 5% under heavy load. That chip was probably a bad one.

How would you guys compare the board against the IT7 Max2 v2.0?
Is it better in oc'ing, memory timings?

Creative
12-22-2002, 07:17 PM
hmmm now thats a tough one Jupiler, I have a soft spot for the Abit boards. :p But here goes;

When I was with AMD I had a KR7A die on me after a vmod gone wrong, so I changed to the 8KHA+ and loved it. It let me oc the cpu more and let me run higher aggresive ram timings.

Now with P4 setups, Ive always had either Asus or Abit boards. Mainly Abit, and mainly IT7 boards. Changing from the Abit to the Epox and I was able to get the cpu to pretty much the same mhz but the good thing is I can run the ram more aggresive.

EG for everryday running im at 165mhz 2-6-2-2 @ 2.85vdimm. I know that I was not able to go over 160mhz at the same timings in the Max2 Rev2 boards. I had to change to 2-7-3-3 above 160fsb. Ive always though this was because the Abit had more aggresive register settings, but not now that Ive seen some benchmarks with this board.

Voltages are very stable for me. Vcore maxes out at 1.79load though after idling at 1.83. I think this is a limitation of the volt regulator thingie. :)

I do prefer the Abit bios though. Especially the one with the Rev 2 board. I found it all setout nice and neat and the menus were well organised. I didnt like though how they took out the Enhance Dram setting though.

I would go as far as to saying that I would be happy to keep this board until the new springdale/canterwood(?) comes out. Thats only about 6-8 weeks yer? :)

Its also half the price of the Max2 Rev2 here in Australia so it was a very attractive option. $200AUD compared to $410. Not sure how it is in your part of the world, but definantly give it a go if you have some spare $$$ hanging round.......especially since you have both boards atm to compare :)

ps
I forgot to mention, with the Rev2 you have BOTH 3:4 and 4:5. In the Epox board some do and some dont. I had to do the pin mod to my 2.4 and 2.8 to get 3:4 showing. Otherwise only 4:5 is displayed. Theres 2 versions of this board, one that detects the cpu and adjusts the divider accordingly, or the broken one which will only show 4:5 for a B cpu and 3:4 for an A cpu

PiLsY

Jupiler.

For me this board is the final nail in Abits P4 coffin. The v2.0 cant even compare to this board. Its faster mhz for mhz, more stable, "feels" quicker as well.

At the same clocks and identical bios setup the v2.0 is 260 3dmarks slower.

As an example I had to give up on TRas 5 on the v2.0 @ 223mhz on most of my sticks of memory (one stick of twinmos and one stick of corsair could go substantially higher though). On this board every stick of memory ive got will run DDR460 or higher at Turbo/2/5/2/2 timings.

Having said that there are bugs. You NEED the c04 bios for starters.

Ive found another bug too. Despite being super pi, pifast, 3dmark and seti stable (6 hours of seti at above speed and timings) if I search the registry or try and export a registry key it reboots?!

The Northbridge runs VERY cool compared to the abit. You get a full 3.2vdimm without mods. My board maxes out cpu wise @ 1.82vcore. With the abit withot pinmodding the CPU or voltmodding the board you can only get 1.7vcore. Stock Epox is 1.82v when set to 1.85v, and 1.79v under load.

I get an extra 80mhz with this 1.6a compared to the IT7 at identical voltage.

My raid array transferred no problem, although it DOES require a windows reinstall.

I was wrong before about the AGP/PCI - it only goes from 30/60 to 40/80, but it is adjustable in 1mhz steps.

I could only run the R9700 @ 33mhz pci/66AGP on the IT7 (37mhz wasnt stable - would crash every 20 minutes or so). On this Epox its happy at 40/80 setting.

Ive not tried graphics clocking yet, and have yet to find out if the AGP adjustment will do anything, but the simple fact its there when the v2.0 doesnt have it is a bonus point for Epox.

The raid scores are faster by about 700 points according to sandra, and have a smoother profile in HDtach (less spiking).

Overall a stunning board, with only one niggle remaining for me (the registry thing). The v2.0 promised much but delivered little for me. Also certain versions of the v2.0 are limited to 3.0vdimm after modding, and wont work with the 3.2vmem bios. EVERY epox board has 3.2vdimm from the factory.

I have a totally unmodded board (not even using the vcore mod) sitting in my case now knocking the socks of my vcore and vdimm modded and northrbdige watercooled v2.0 for both overclocking and clock for clock speed.

Have you ever seen an unbuffered sandra bench on the v2.0 of nearly 2000mb/s thats 100% stable? This is only my starting point too. In 2 hours time itll be another 4 hours of memtest and then up another 1mhz FSB.

No comparison IMO, the Epox is better hands down. And this coming from a self professed Epox hater :).

Why its a crap test that has no relevance to real world performance? Its a complete waste of 45 seconds of my life and I cba doing it m8. Totally worthless benchmark created just to please the public and let them see bigger numbers.

As an example, I can get 3595/3612 using cas 2/7/3/3 compared to 3623/3659 @ 2/5/2/2 using my orginal DDR474 bench. Not much difference huh? Wrong. Unbuffered using the 2/7/3/3 is 1559/1545 instead of 1952/1983 and 3dmark is down by nearly 1000 points. As I said, Buffered sandra is totally worthless.

Sorry if it sounds like im having a go - I dont intend to, this is just a subject which REALLY irritates me. People need educating about this - consider yourself educated ;).

12-23-2002, 01:39 AM
macci - as the unbuffered bench shows its got crappy bandwidth. Im currently benching at DDR482 with timings maxed out which is yielding far better results.

So far im at just shy of 17000 with no GFX clocking at all. This is with the 1.6a (@2.9 give or take) and shoving 3.2v down the memory.

The board performs like a true winner with tight timings, but relaxed it REALLY sucks. Worse than the old IT7 rev1.

Anyway, ive got a few 9700 Pros to play with here - need to find the best one. The hercules is somewhat dissapointing I must say. Only 360/340 stock. Thats the only one ive even tried so far (and only cos it came with its own overclocking doodad - which was crap). Anyway, theres still MUCH more in the memory. Im just taking things VERY slowly. The last 6 months have been very hard on me with hardware failures, and im determined not to let impatience screw things up for me again.

This morning I had the board maxed out on memory timings and booting into memtest at OVER DDR500.

However, im in no rush and dont have the cpu to compete at the top of the tables at the moment, so im gonna sit back, take my time and make sure everything is done perfectly.

Pilsy, try 2.5-7-2-2 instead of 2-7-3-3 (when you run over DDR 500). See what sort of unbuffered bench you get and if 3DMark goes up instead of going down like from 2-7-2-2 to 2-7-3-3. I find CAS doesn't affect performance much, but the other 2's (Ras to Cas and Ras Precharge) are the real performance boosters.

PiLsY
12-23-2002, 02:33 AM
At cas 2.5 I get memory errors in memtest m8 when im right on the edge, even though Cas 2 passes. From looking at sandra at lower FSBs though Cas 2 is faster anyway.

Remember to set your timings to manual instead of Turbo - makes it much more stable on the edge and you dont lose any speed.

However it seems that this mobo has a Vcore lock, which prevents me from going over what I can get when Vcore is set at 1.85 in BIOS. Could you find out the mod for that ? Many thanks :)

Niko - you wont get 2v+ in bios at all im afraid m8. My 1.6a is pin modded to 1.7v default and I only get -0.1 to +0.15. Youre always limited to 1.85 vcore via bios. Who told you itd go higher with a vid pin mod?

If I remember rightly its the HIP6301CB chip for vreg on this board. Cant make out the writing with it in the case - too much work to take it out with the prometia attatched.

Check for me if its the HIP chip, if it is simply follow Randis guide for the vmod on the KR7a/KX7/KD-7 in the motherboard vmods forum. Youll need to do the 2 stage mod - pin 7 AND pin 20 to ground with VRs.

Will be starting a new thread with all my results in this evening hopefully.

I put some XMS3500 on it and now its like a whole new board :D
On It7MAX2 this particular xms rAM module didn't even load windows at 200fsb 2-6-2-2 timiings.. well now I put it on this 4PEA and this is what I got:
PiFast @ 252MHz (http://www.solidhardware.com/macci/4pea/xms252.gif) mem 2.5-5-2-2, command per clock&fast CS enabled.

Sandra mem at 253,5MHz same timings (CPU @3042MHz):
unbuffered => 2106/2116 (http://www.solidhardware.com/macci/4pea/xms253mem.gif)
http://www.solidhardware.com/macci/4pea/253_small.gif
buffered => 3910/3912 (http://www.solidhardware.com/macci/4pea/xms253membuffer.gif)

Now I need to do some 3dmark and see how it performs ;)

Told ya macci :). Have faith my man. Check my other thread about how picky it is with the memory. Match the stick it wants with a stick youve got and its pure magic.

I did :p

I tested it myself :) Did a 3 pin mod and got selectable voltages from -0.1 to +0.225 which gave me 2.025V max. Creative can also confirm this. He did a similar mod (4 pins). Just that we didn't get real 2V :/

Yep I can confirm this :)

I had the pin trick done to my 2.8 and I got 1.725 default and then was able to select up to 2.025 like Niko. Ive taken the mod off and just run 1.65 in bios which gives me 1.59-1.61load in windows.

My board really gets hammered at the vcore and 12v compared to Niko in comparison and prob you guys. THis is because of my Vapo according to what ive read :)

Im currently 216mhz @ 2-6-2-2 @ 2.90vdimm in bios which gives me 2.94 in windows for my everyday speeds. My ram hated 6 in the IT7 boards I had but this board allows me to run it. Phycologically I prefer running 6 than 7 :p
hehehehe

Yes I know about the pin trick and that you can select up to 2 volt and higher in BIOS , but my question is, is this only cosmetic (visual) or does it really provide over 2 volts to the processor? Have you measured it with MBM5 or some other program?
I ask because I read somewehere that even though you see 2 volt in BIOS it cannot provide more than 1.85 VCore to the processor even with pin trick.

This board, similar to the 4G4A+, has a Vcore lock. It needs modding :) After that it will give real 2V instead of 1.85 Max Vout.

Well mine certainly doesnt give 2v in bios.

Im vid pin modded to 1.7v default and have -0.1 to +0.15 available in bios.

and what is the version number ? There are two different version numbers out there.....one works with the 3:4 BIOS, the other one doesn't. They might be different in this Vcore stuff too.

Maybe the ones that have the dividers working dont have that vcore thing and the ones who dont have the divider working get the vcore thing?

Or maybe it could be a + vs a non + version thing? COs Niko and I have non + versions......

*enter twilight zone music here* :p

My number on the serial on the box is -021121000043 and its a Rev 1 4PEA

I dont have 3:4 AND 4:5 options. I only have 3:4 with my Northy "A" cpu and yest I still dont have a vcore adjust above 1.85v in bios despite the pin mod.

I do however have the 4PEA+.

I have 2 systems both with the 4PEA+ Rev 1.0.

System1: P4 2.53(533) does NOT have both 3:4 and 4:5 dividers
System2: P4 2.66(533) does have both dividers.

With the same BIOS ofcourse.
So definitly there are different versions out there.

The board which had both dividers blew up on me however, I have posted the picture in this thread a while back.

For more info, see the aoaforums in the Intel section. I have posted all the info with serial numbers there.

Just for the record:
Epox 4PEA+
Serial nr. 28009201769
3:4 and 4:5 multipliers available after flashing with bios C04

Great mobo BTW ;)

I bought this mobo as a spur of the moment thing just the other day, got it up and running yesterday and wow :D

My first Intel chip since a Celeron 400, and loving every minute of it.

I haven't had a chance to fiddle with it much yet, and I have no idea how good/bad my 1.8A is (I bought it cheap off Ebay in NZ), but I can get into Windows at 2.4 @ 1.75 V but it's not stable yet. It also has cold boot problems at 130+ FSB (which annoyed me a bit this morning before I came to work ;) )

Anyone else have any Cold Boot problems, or is it just me? I'll download the latest BIOS tonight and see if that helps at all.

So, if my russian language file isn't failing me these are the differences between the + and non + version

Specifiations which only apply to the EP-4PEA+:
• Extra 2 serial-ATA ports for serial ATA-150 drives
• Extra 2 IDE ports by Highpoint 372 IDE RAID controller
• 2 extra USB 2.0 ports by included USB back-panel cable
• 10/100MB LAN by Realtek RTL8100B
• Post port onboard (Diagnostic LED system)
* The EP-4PEA+ is shipped with IDE Round cable and Magic-Light Chipset FAN.

Correct? If so, I don't need the plus version.. which saves me 60 euro which I can spend on my corsair pc3500 :)

That's right, the + version has those options.
I picked mine up today (+ version).
I checked the bios for the 3:4 option but it wasn't available.
After flashing to the C04 bios, I can choose 3:4 or 4:5, so no need for jumper soldering. :p
Im getting a 2.66Ghz for testing from a guy who's gonna try my 2.8V. His 2.66 does 3.5 on a Vapo so I hope to reach 3.6Ghz with the Prommy and some nice memory bandwith.

C04 version eh? Do you happen to have a link? The only ones I can see are the C02 and the A30 (which I have now and came with my board)

Ah, cheers :D

Was having a bit of trouble. I eventually clicked the C02 link and changed the 2 for a 4 and it worked. I just wish that Epox program would download the new one for me correctly. Guess I'll have to find a floppy drive around my house tonight then.

Hey :D

Yeah, I'm a bit obsessed with them ;). It's great living here in Wellington - I've seen bits of the filming (from a distance) and been outside The Embassy for the last two Premieres :).

My girlfriend also went out with Dominic Monaghan for a little while (before I'd met her) :D
