First ones will be socket 940.

Then later on, they'll move it to Socket 939. The first dual core ones will probably be Opteron.

To clarify, dual core is two cpu's/cores on a single chip? So it will look just like a single core cpu, albeit slightly bigger? Or are there two seperate chips underneath a heatspreader?

When I first heard of dual core I pictured two chips, but I've seen a picture of the circuitry of the cpu, and it looked like two cores on a single chip.

Are there issues with production loss if one of the cores turn out to be defective? I was just wondering about this too and what impact it would have as they go up to quad core and such.

There are Two chips underneath the heatspreader but as far as i know only one L2 cache. In case of the dual core opteron the die size seems to be very similar to the single core opteron as you can see here:

I was wondering about production loss too coz you cant simply cut them. And it would be interesting how this would take effect when it comes to overclocking. Probably AMD can test the cores before they are put together and select the ones wich work good together.

Each Core will have it own cache. It's Dual CPU (cores) on one chip.

the first ones will be 940 but i dont think they will make it to 939 i think they will make it 1207 because of the new ddr2 platform which will be important in 2006.

I cant find anything on it atm, but I think I remember reading that the dual core CPUs share the L2 cache.
