Ok for the average user.

Which would be a better setup?

1 gb fast ram allowing nice overclocking ability and still allowing tight timings(260+ FSB on A64).

OR

2gb (2x 1gb stick) ? Same ram if possible if not, avg ram.

So a nice overclock on the 1 gb system with tight timings, or an avg overclock with semi loose timings on the 2gb system?

This would be for gaming(EQ2, HL2, D3, UT2k4, etc) mostly. Sure every once in a while dvd burning, etc. I'm a person that tries not to multitask when I have a game such as HL2 or EQ2 open. Although the ability to alt tab out to get some zone information on EQ2 would be nice sometimes(I usually just keep maps and whatnot in a binder though, for EQ1).

If EQ2 is anything like WoW in terms of mem usage, 2GB would definitely be worth it, or at least 3x512MB in DC. However, those other games don't require nearly as much RAM, and it would be more beneficial to just stick to 2x512mb.

512mb 2x. would be better. gaming doesn't really need 2gb of RAM. Plus the overclock would go down. Wouldn't really be worth it.

2gb can be a difference. i for one run alot of things and sometimes game at the same time. ive heard of ocz 2gb sticks doing up to 240fsb, but 215ish would most likely be max.

if you really need 2gb, ddd2 would be better as the 2gb ddr2 sets seem to oc alot better...

Yea but I'm wanting to run an A64 system so DDR2 isn't an option at this point.

240 wouldn't be bad, but 215 fsb I don't think will be acceptable for me. I'm thinking 2x512 should be enough for now. If not, I can always upgrade.

Karnivore here had some real nice OCZ DDR 3200 1 gig sticks that did 250 at 1:1 cas 3-3-3-something...

honestly, from 2 gigs of ram, doing 250, cas 3-3-3 is fine for me.

I have a friend running 2 gigs of A-data 3200 (worst ram ever) and it's nice for cas 3-3-3 and I can't tell the difference, except in benchmarks.
the 2 gigs however, did seem to make little to no difference in games on his PC from when he was running 1 gig.
I think in his case, 2 gigs of ram, is more of a ego boost then anything.

afaik

most amd64's cant handle for dimms and overclocking. they defualt to ddr333.

So i guess it would be 2gb set 200-220fsb OR 1gb ~280fsb

it would be nice if someone could run alot of benchmarks with like 2gb at 215fsb, and 1gb at lets say 250fsb same cpu overall speed, and see if games gain any perforance.

Yea but there are 1 gb sticks so you could do 2gb with only taking up 2 slots. Still I don't think those will allow for much O/Cing ability from what I understand.

well yea thats what we mean with we say they will only do 215fsb or so..

EQ2

If your play a lot and don't care about running 1:1 and getting great timings, then 2GB is the way to go.

Yea, I'm thinking that I'll just go 2x 512mb and wait until the 2x 1gb has a better O/cing ability and upgrade at that time.

wont be for a while. i think companys are more keen on fsb then gb's

Ahh well, I'd rather try the cheaper solution first. It makes sense though, just like the processors now. Instead of going up in GHz they are trying to get rid/lessen some of the bottle necks.

DDR 600 with the tight timings of DDR 400 would be pretty sick I'd think.

I'd say 1GB...what game honestly needs 2GB?

LOL, same old story, just different numbers.... I have to wonder how many of these threads we'll see  They are the exact duplicate of the 512 VS 1024 threads. Even old games such as Diablo II are improved. Improvement varies from slight to huge, the biggest and most noticable is in games such as WOW, EQx, DAOC.
