according to a roadmap at vr-zone (i think its originally from inq though) in Q2 2003, an HT enabled 2.8 all the way down to 2.4 is supposed to be priced at $278. guys think this is possible? if so, it's great news.

Not just possible, very likely. I read it on the inq and they made it sound like intel publicly announced it at Comdex. If you read the thread further down in this forum, bmg mentioned that enabling HT on lower chips would help convince developers to bring multithreaded apps to market more quickly, which makes a whole lot of sense to me. Plus it wouldn't cost Intel anything to do so, so why wouldn't they?

oh i know it's possible. just didn't know if intel was going through with it. they have been on all the northwoods, maybe even the willies. a 2.4 C1, with HT, on a granite bay or springdale would be ideal! but right about then, prescott comes out!

Well, you asked if it was possible. :p

Williamettes were also HT enabled, I read a while ago about some guy that got one to work running a home brew distro of Linux.

Will Intel do it? I believe so. :)

And, what's even better is Intel's addition of the 800MHz FSB to these new HT-enabled Northwoods. They will go very nicely with Springdale PE and it's DC DDR400 support.

Intel supporting DDR400 is rather strange.

ok i see lol. i thought you were getting at "possible" in a technically possible" sense, not possible in an "intel actually going through with it."

my bad. i hope intel does go through with it.

Yes, it is. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jedec has no plans for standardizing DDR400 (In DDR "I" form anyway). Intel stalled official support for DDR333 untill Jdec finalized the standard, but now they're going ahead with chipsets specificly built for a Jedec-unapproved memmory standard.

Could it be? Has Intel finally grown a pair and decided they can move without Jedec's official support?

You're correct. DDR400 is not an official DDR-I spec and DDR-II is still far from finalized (not realistic on the desktop until 2004).

It was my understanding that Intel wanted DDR400 skipped by JEDEC so they could focus on DDR-II (and the 'real' DDR400). Perhaps they still feel this way and are just capitalizing the popularity of this enthusiast spec?

Either way, I'll take it. :)

Phalanx, do you have any links with info on springdale supporting DC400? in that link you posted, i didn't see any info, only that intel might roll out a 800 fsb processor. of course they could do what they did with i850E originally, when they only validated PC800 for use with the 533 processors.

If you can a P4 2.4B ES or faster chances are it has HT enabled.

I had always heard Canterwood to be an SMP chipset, so I don't know what the story is there. Perhaps it's a similar situation to Granite Bay.

Really? How did you find this out? I was THIS close to buying a 2.4 ES, but the dude was asking for $400+.
