Bizzar mic problem

trying to help out a friend of the grandson whos computer willnot make the mic work. What`s bazzar is if I switch the headset plugs around and talk into the earpeice, it works in the test hardware wizzard where you set-up the mic. Move them back and the mic doesn`t work. Have tryed with three diffrent headset/mics including one has no volume or on-off/mute switch in line, they all work in another machine, all of them will not work in this one. They do however all work if I plug them in backwards and talk into the earpeice, the computer will recieve that as a mic imput and I can even make a sound recording talking into the earpeice, but plug the mic from the headset back into that socket and nothing.
MSI KT3 Ultra series with all the latest drivers from MSIs site, XP pro.

it`ll only record through the left earpeice, so i`m wondering if it`s sounding like one channel is grounded out and then cancelling both channels with the mic plugged in?
