Very nice :)

PIC for control, PWM fan control and A/D for temp sensors, using a Max232 line driver?

edit - also, what are you using to power (on/off) the compressor?

Nice! Its great to have a lot of electronics knowledge with overclocking and building of super cooling systems - the combination of both can end up with some awesome kit. Great that was made with no money!....

It's a similar spec to my first controller that i knocked up some years ago.
For my new cascade system that im building i decided to throw a whack of money at it and completely redesign it, ya can take a gander here (i was gonna post the whole lot in this thread but tbh i dont wanna seem like im here to steal ya thunder)

Anyway ya can take a look ere : http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=49838

I rather keep specific information of the sistem in private since I´m going to sell it. I´m working on the user manual so I can give a better description of the controller and it´s way of working.

When I started to make my custom phase changer, a friend was interested in the electrical part of the system and took the challenge to do a custom controller, something like the chill control unit, but IMHO better :D

This is the list of features:

Basic sistem description:

Especifications:
Hardware:
• (6) Inputs for temperature sensors.
• 1 Alphanumeric LCD port.
• 1 keyboard (6 keys) for config. and browsing .
• 1 PSU power control.
• 1 Motherboard power-on/off control.
• 1Compressor power control.
• 1 Fan port.
• 1 RS-232 comunication port.

Software:
• Temperature monitoring
• Fan speed, power-on temp, power-off temp configurable .
• Pc power-on delay.
• Automatic pc-shutdown in case of reaching critical temperature.
• Compressor Power on delay to to prevent damage
• Firmware update by serial port

It will work with different or no display at all, independently of the power the Pc (have his own 12v psu) and with different probes.

HERE (http://www.hardware4geeks.com/pics/golden_eagle/froster2.wmv) you have a video from a very early version and a pair of pics of the last prototipe.
It was made with no money at all and no chillcontrol or other controller to copy at all.
What do you think?

BTW, my friend Golden Eagle it´s the creator and he would like to answer any question.

I want one! nice job!

Awesome work! Im definitely interested in this controller. What would be the price?

Golden_Eagle
01-08-2005, 01:49 PM
Te prices is gonna be about u$s100.

malachia: you need any interfase (eg: Golden Froster) so u can measure temperature and send it to the diplay

I don´t understand exactly what paint u are asking me to post...
U can download the temp probe datasheet from this linkhttp://www.national.com/ds/LM/LM135.pdf

The LCD used here is not a serial one, it has a standard interface chip (HD44780 or HD44100)

PD: I almoust forgot about it... SILENCER! thanks for starting this thread.

Update
The prototype was tested in my system and it wokrs like a charm, automatic start and shutdown, firmware update, tested probes, fan starts at full speed and go to 50% after -30c and you can override to 100% when u want to (benchs etc) in ten days the final product will be finished.

Your damn good at electronics my friend ;)

The LCD stuff i need to find out before i can even think of the kind of controller.

I will make a full hardware controller for my cascade in the future maybe. I like hardware more than software. That's why i study Electronics with specialisation: automation (like PLC etc).

yes, it is possible, just needs better sensors for the greater temps, and a firmware upgrade. It is able to handle 16 AMPs, so you can throw it a pair of compresors without any problem. :)

I dont understand why u need a 230v version? Is it to handle 230v fans?
In order to maintain total independence from the PC psu , froster it uses its own 12v/5v psu connected to 220v.

BTW, thanks Pythagoras

very nice controller there.
if you know what you doing with PIC chips and LCD's you can make a hole lot of things. my last job they designed HF radios they were using some really cool chips, ones where you program the chip to tell it what pin does what, makes routing pcb tracks alot easier, i was only a service tech though, no designing for me, I would like to though.
in a few years i hope to go to university to upgrade me electronics diploma to an engineering degree in instrumentation and control or electrical engineering.

Very nice work Golden_Eagle, thorough design and tidy work :toast:

I'm in the process of trying to design one for myself too... a few tips (nothing that would give away any specifics) would be greatly appreciated.

1) Do you also supply the power supply for the compressor, or do you just plumb into the existing circuitry to turn it off/on?

2) To maintain a set temperature do you:
* Turn compressor on/off?
* Throttle compressor speed?
* Turn the condensor fan on/off?
* Something else?

3) Did you use Thermistors for temp monitoring or something else?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me :)
Rabb

Golden_Eagle
03-26-2005, 11:10 PM
1) The compressor is feed by the 220v line; the controller switches the energy when it´s needed.
2) The temp goes free, it reaches a balance between the phase changer´s
and the precessor´s one.
3)I use ic´s for the probes

FireDragon
03-30-2005, 02:58 PM
NICE, work Golden_Eagle I am also designing something like this for my chiller I want it for this list of things.

1) Control the compressor to turn on and off with the temps once I find the chillers happy place.
2) Monitor res temps
3) Control condenser fan speed
4) monitor compressor temps and have a fan come on once a set temp is reached then shut off once it is bellow the temp by a certain margin.
5) And a few other various things that I have forgotten at the moment...(did you know that weed gives you short term memory loss...)o nit pick at.

So that is my plain here…once I design it I will put up a schematic for all of you to nit pick at…

G-Froster Value specs:

• 1 Input for temperature sensor (-67 Fahrenheit or -55Celsius )
• Led display , to show basic information.
• 1 Motherboard power-on/off control.
• 1 Compressor power control.
• Fixed settings (-25c(-13f) power on, 0c(32f) power off) (this parameters can be
customised by user request)
• 5 min Restart delay (this parameters can be

An lcd disply for the value is overkill, cause it costs near 50% more, and then you have the full G-Froster X

Hi B5I8, I´m afraid that this thing they sell is not apropiate for the G-Froster value...

Btw we are in Argentina. It wouldn´t be cheap to import a few parts just for one card to sell.

Cr@sh_D1n3r

it's used as a protection when you shut off the compressor so the pressure on both side (high and low) equilize and make sure the compressor is safe to restart

Ssilencer

Well, that was an idea, we offer our help, but if we have to do software for any OS available, the controllers would be too much expensive.

Bergo
06-20-2005, 08:19 AM
I disagree, I think that if you (or someone) would create a program so that you could have linux compatibility, you could use it as a major selling point, and since the linux comunity is for the most part open source and volunteer effort, I"m sure you could find someone to give you a hand. writing a program for compatibility with other OS's shouldn't raise the price, it opens up new markets for you, creating mosre ciustomers to buy your product :)
that said, it's a personal choice, your controller, your software, your choice, if you would prefer to jsut sell to the windows-using comunity, and not bother with other os's that don't have as much of a customer base, thats your decision :)

It's simple, there you have a Linux user, we offer our help, but he dont want it.
The controller is fully configurabble with or without software, cause it has his own front pannel. there arent a big market for controllers, nobody is gonna be rich with this, and is more like a hobby, so yes, we dont have time to do a linux soft, I think Asetek or promie maker neither, and they are fully commercial companies.
we do our best effort to bring a good product, if anyone wants to invest money in this, then we will see linux, win 3.1 or whatever the investor wants :D.

Any further development on a USB interface?
How many thermal probes can the unit monitor?
Can it control more than 1 fan?

Ssilencer

It will take a while for the USB interface, but it is in development.
The "X" version can monitor up to 4 thermal probes (comes with one, but you can order the extra probes).
The "X" version can control 2 fans. (2 120mm panaflos for ex.)

Is the fan control based on PWM or turning the voltage up and down?
Can you control the fans based on temp ranges of specific temp probes?

This could be a very useful controller in the watercooling world too... ie if you can get a temp probe into the water loop and control the fans on your rad based on the temp of the water.

Golden_Eagle
08-10-2005, 12:16 PM
The fan is controlled by PWM.
The incoming firmware will have an option to set the fan speed based on the evap temp.

We are thinking of making controllers for WC... as always the main obstacles are time and money.

The value froster i have does not match the instructions chilly sent.

the right side has pwr switch and mobo switch plus compressor on in the instructions and mine has a 3rd 2 pin conector.

is this the 5v monitor ?.

what is the jumper for and the 5 pin header.

This is the correct value instalation

The jumper is for select Centigrades or Farenheit

A 12v ac 250ma is not apropiate, you need a 9v AC 500mA
Forget about the 5 pinheader, it was just to program.

That is a good way to attach the thermal probe, you can also stick the probe with a thermal epoxy.

Hi Ssilencer or GoldenEagle, I am wondering if you got the software and

firmware going.

Also do you have a manual or instruction booklet on how to connect the

unit's wiring to the mobo. I have a some gray wires coming out the unit, one

is a serial port, the other is a 2pin male connector i ground to start the count

down on the unit. The molex i believe is for the fan, but the others i'm lost.

I send pic to show. Thank you for any info on this, i think ur Golden -Froster

rivals that from ASETEK. :)

Molex goes to any molex on your psu, it gets the reading of the 5v to protect your computer.
the 2 pin male conector goes to the 2 pin female conector for the power button on your Pc case.
The 2 pin female conector goes to the pwr on on your motherboard.
the last one is the serial port, well, conect to yopur serial port so you can upgrade firmare and get and send info to the froster.

my msn is msporta@cvtci.com.ar so you can get the beta software and firmware update.

Ok, I was just messing around with it and plugged in a dummy power switch and the molex connector to running power supply and of course plugged the main power cord in. After the 5 minute wait I start it up(just with the evap in the air) and it starts great, says On.... PC On.... then gives me what I think is an error code of E7C I believe. The evap gets nice and cold but I dont' know how cold. Do I have to connect it to the motherboard power on switch to let this work correctly just for testing it out? Overall I really like this and am very impressed.

Any suggestions?

Check the coneccion of the temp probe.

Is the temp reading ok till you guet the "pc on" screen??

BlueAqua
10-23-2005, 09:12 AM
This is a quck video I took. It starts with the unit off, then pushing the power on button and then after I get the reading of -E7C I push the power button again and get ---.

The unit gets nice and cold. I checked the wire from the Gfroster to the temperature probe and it's intact and connected but I didn't check continuity.

So I assume it's supposed to work like this:
Power button on
Screen says "On"
Temperature starts to lower but is displaying some temperature
Once temp hits -25 then "Pc On"
Then displays temp the whole time and continues to display this.

Please any help you would be would be great. Thanks

My G-Froster Value just started acting up in a similar way not even 2-3 days ago (after a couple of months of working just fine). Instead of starting at like 24-25C ("room temp"), cooling off to ~ -23C and turning the PC on, the temp reads low on initial start-up (like -87C, which my be your "-E7C") and slowly climbs up. Difference between yours and mine is that it will still read temp instead of --- and that temp seems to be about normal after 5 min or so of the PC being on. CPU temps are the same as before so it's either the controller or the temp probe.

The problem is, instead of waiting to turn the PC on, it starts it right away because the temp reading is so cold. The first time it happened, mine did a thermal shutdown because the evap didn't have enough time to cool off before it powered up the mobo.

I have my 5V lead from the G-Froster connected to a spare PSU and I turn the unit separately, let it cool off for about 5 min. and then power the PC on manually.

I thought it was just me having a fluke, but maybe there's more to it if I am not the only one...

There are 2 presets on the controller, they are used for calibration purposes. If any of you have made any adjustment to them, let me know so I can tell you how to correct it.

If that´s not your case...
boostedevo:
I think the temp probe isn´t working ok, but i´m not completely sure.
I´d like you to unplug the temp probe from the board, and tell me what do you get on the display while the phase is cooling down.
It´s a really weird failure, that the temp reading becomes normal after a while.
The voltage between the temp probe terminals should be 2.98v at 25ºc (it has to be attached to the controller) I´t would be great if you can test that.
BlueAqua, your problem could be a shortcircuit in the temp probe, can you unplug the probe and check it with a continuity tester?

boostedevo
10-24-2005, 10:36 AM
Golden_Eagle, I haven't touched anything on the controller at all.

1) Unplug temp probe w/ unit on, it reads "HI".
2) Unplug temp probe w/ unit off and then turn on, it reads "E8C".
3) Voltage at the pins when LED reads ~ 0C = 2.75V
4) Voltage at the pins when LED reads ~ -42C = 2.30V.

I'll test the voltage again the next time I do a cold boot and the evap is up to "room temp". According to the temp probe, that may be 24-26C or -85 to -90C :)

boostedevo
10-24-2005, 12:19 PM
I left the unit off for about an hour and fired it up with the DMM leads on the pins and the probe connected. Oddly enough, I now get the exact same error that BlueAqua does (E7C) and voltage is way down on the probe (.46-.50V). I restarted it a few times, but the error and voltage remains unchanged.

Ok I've taken a resistance reading from the load side of the temperature probe that connected to the circuit board and got about 45 ohms with the probe somewhat less than ambiant (21C). It wasn't acutally connected at this time when I did the measurements. This to me sounds about right, what do you think?

Also I took a resistance reading of the 2 pins on the circuit board and got infinite, so that sounds right.

All the voltage readings seems to be acurrate, but not the last one.
Could you separate the temp prob from the evaporator and redo the last test? "...left the unit off for about an hour and fired..."
If the problem persists, I´d try with a new temp probe. You could probably get a cheap LM335Z in a local store, it will be fine to do the test.

BlueAqua: I get a reading of ~40 Kohms in a new temp probe. If you are getting 45 Ohms you definitely need another temp probe. Contact chilly1 and see if he can change your´s for a newone.
Btw the resistence measurement will not tell you the temperature of the probe.

BlueAqua

Ok, I have it figured out. It turns out that when I received the unit the 2 wire cable was off and I hooked it up like you were supposed to, but it turns out that the 2 wires were swapped and it didn't work. So I swapped them around and now all works as designed. Man, that was quite a relief. It's now awesome to see -57C. That was with no load and just in open air but quite awesome to see. I can't wait to get it hooked up and get it all going. One question though.

Is there a shutdown function associated with this and how does that work? I didn't have it hooked up to my motherboard but when I shutdown windows will that turn the unit off or do I have to hook up some kind of a power switch. When I press the power button all I get is ---. I don't know if this is right or now but we're making good progress.

I ended taking another resistance reading and got 40Kohms this time. I think I was on the wrong scale or something. I just use an old analog radio shack model so it's not all too accurate but gets me by until I get my Fluke.

boostedevo
10-25-2005, 09:30 PM
G_E: I'l try to get around to that this week...I have a Fry's local that usually has a decent selection. Oddly enough, ever since doing that voltage test, I shut it down for a couple of hours and when I came back to the "room temp" turn-on test, all I've gotten since is the E7C code.

I am waiting for Chilly1 to finish up something else and this unit is going to be sent back to him at some point anyway, so I'll let him deal with it if I haven't figured it out by then ;) I'll keep you posted if/when I swap the probe though...

Golden_Eagle
10-26-2005, 04:19 AM
BlueAqua: I´m glad you figured out. It was driving me crazy hehehe.
The pahse changer will be turned off when you shotdown windows, after the 5v on the psu are gone. That´s when the "---" screen goes away.
If you press the power botton, the whole system will be shot down ( the power button should be set in the BIOS, to the option that shots down windows)
To do a complete test, you should connect the controller to the mobo, an to the PC-PSU.
G-Froster will take care of the whole system, so you can use your pc like a fan-cooled one.

Boostedevo: Stay touch. i´m still wondering what happend to your controller. I supose a probe replacement will be enough.

I PM'd Ssilencer but he hasn't been online so I'll just ask here.

I've got a Mach1 I just modded and it's working great but the controller is pretty awful, and it looks like the hold reset is just holding so unless i can sort that out, and mod the temp probe resistance, it's just too awkward to work with.

Can the golden froster (basic version) just be wired in? I mean can I use the existing temp probe with it to avoid having to strip down the head?

Could I use the one fan controller for the fans, and the other for the evap heater? Or does the basic version come with dual fan control?

I can wire things up without a problem if some small changes were needed, but it's the controller itself I just wonder about. Mainly the temp probe. Also can I use my fluke to read the temps and calibrate the readout with it? The full version I'd assume yes, but was wondering about the basic just to keep the switch inexpensive.

Also if you could PM me a price for UK shipped that would be great :)

Cheers

Since I haven't been able to track down ssilencer myself, I will chime in for you Gray.
#1. NTC Thermistor is used on mach I while LM335 is used on froster.. incompatible. Maybe some software rewrite could be done but it would be a lot of work with table and equation on their end.
#2. Fan controller probably could be reprogrammed. But I doubt it can handle much power. What is resistance of heatpad?

The basic controller can be used the temp probe is of a different type but you can attach teh probe to the suctionline under the neck of the suctionline and get emps somewhere near.. closer than most mach display's. The temps are close to accurate.. and you can adjust them a little..

Bryce I will send you a new controller when they arrive.. Wee Njkid has a copy now so when he gets up PM him ...
No need for that. Golden sent me firmware version 3.2 along with the software. While I can't get the software to install properly, I did get it to run so I changed the temp reading. Thanks for the offer though. Everything is running fine and dandy with the unit so I'm happy now :D.

No, it is latest verison of X and early version of X.
XE looks significantly different and not available yet.

I think the XE is available, i pm'd chilly1 and he said all he had was the values and XEs in his stock. i was assuming the XE was a dummbed down version of the full. I don't want a dumbed down version of anything! hehe
i could be wrong tho..

You could probably still order X if you asked and deal with wiring... I prefer new interface of XE myself after using one X. Functionality wise, they are same thing really. :woot: And much cleaning wiring from what I can see.

sneil you can program your name in the LCD an much more, by using the windows sofware either in X´s or Xe´s controllers; No need of keyboard.

btw, as Jinu117 said Xe is a new version of controller, NO dummbed version.
We improbed many things that make it easyer for the user to do the installation process.
