View Full Version : Bad initial results with Gskill PC4400 LE

I had only an hour or so to play with my new RAM last night. But it seems that i recived a realy bad batch or this RAM is just very picky on timings and i havent found the right combination.

i lowered my multi to 6 to rule out cpu as a limiting factor.

I started with 250fsb at 2.7v and that booted windows fine. Then i i tried 280 and that booted into windows. I left RAM timings all on auto and it seems that its being detected at 2.5 ,4 ,4 ,8 and not the rated timings of 2.5 ,3 ,3 ,7. Anyhow i was optimistic seeing as i could already boot windows at 280FSB. Then it all went downhill. I tried 285FSB and it almost gets into windows then reboots. I tried upping the vdimm as high as 2.9 and that didnt help. I tried using a vcore of 1.7 and that didnt help. I tried upping chipset voltage to 1.8 and that didnt help. i tried CAS 3 and that didnt help. So i gave up and went back to 280. I tried to load World of Warcraft and i quickly get a merrory error and the game crashes. This also happened with Steam. I tried going down in 5FSB increments and this kept happening even at 250FSB. SuperPI wouldnt even run. I finally was getting very short on time so i just put it all the way down to 220FSB and it seemed to stabalize and superPI and WOW would run without crashing.

Now my old RAM would do 250FSB at CAS2 using stock chipset voltage. So im pretty sure its not my mobo holding me back. I also booted windows at 300HTT with my old RAM using a divider. And i could game at that HTT if i remember correctly. So i dont believe that my CPU's mem controller is to blame. I was using slots 1 and 3 which was what had been working for me. I even tried using the 2 slots closest to the heatsink, i think thats 1 and 2. Anyhow that made no difference.

Could someone with the same mobo and RAM as me post thier exact memory settings in bios plz? That might help me.

Im not sure what to do now. Will giving voltage above 2.9 realy make a difference? It doesnt seem like ppl with TCCD ever need that much.

So any suggestions are very welcome. Thanks

try a different motherboard bios maybe?

My GSkill LE will go higher at 2.5v than 2.85v on My Neo2....

I have done numerous test in Memtest AND in windows ( just last night in windows using corecenter).

I almost wish my board could go to 2.4v to see if it would help!!

BTW When running Cas2 mine want MORE voltage, this has been stated in threads elsewhere, and I proved it with mine.

Seeing as I have TCCD I didn't wanna do a vdimm mod ( or even vio=vdimm), but I may, and just put it on a switch....
Would really blow if the switch got bumped without me knowing though.

that is very interesting. Could you elaborate on what would happen when ur Vdimmwas set higher then 2.5v? Would you get blue screen reboots? would u get into windows but apps would crash?

I was testing it IN WINDOWS last night ( I had already done this in memtest- same results, less errors/higher speeds at lower V for cas2.5, higher V for cas2)..
Running Pifast or SuperPi and using clockgen to up speeds.
Using Corecenter(Neo2) to adjust vdimm and vcore ( shutoff after set).

It would pass, then not pass, then pass and so on..
2.85 volts was the worst with my sticks @ cas 2.5

I used pifast and SPI because it just won't pass, it'll error out and not finish, I kept adjusting until I got it to pass, then kept going afap.

I DID experience blue screen/reboot when changing timings in A64 tweaker a couple of times ( trying different stuff).

2x512mb on a 754 1:1? That in itself might be a problem...
Has there been any good results with 1GB TCCD on a UT?

try running only 1 stick at a time. also dont give it so much volts. s754 mobos generally dont like running two sticks, a big reason I went s939

Try 2T, I have XMS4400C25 which uses TCCD on my Neo2 Plat. I can run 1:1 1T 2.5-4-4-8 up to 285Mhz at stock volts, same settings but to hit 286 Mhz I need 2.85v, any higher at 1T is no good.

I think the limit for most TCCD 1:1 @ 1T is around 285 - other websites have confirmed this (anandtech.com did a 1:1 max test with some popular TCCD most topped out between 280Mhz - 285Mhz 1:1 @ 1T they pushed further at 2T however).

That may be true, and it sounds reasonable, but it wouldnt even run stable at 250FSB, and also i should note that i set the timings to auto, and that should be 2T and it still didnt add stability.

Thanks for the replys so far. Im stuck at work for 5 more hours so i wont be able to do any more testing till i get home. But more suggestions are welcome. I shall try them all (if necessary) when i get home.

auto isn't 2T.
on 754 you will be lucky to get 235-245 1:1 IMO
just a platform limitation I'm afraid

with 2.5-3-3-7 at 2.65V up to 295 and 2.7V for 296 and up, but unstable at 301. Probly my neo2....

Im sory i was mistaken. Disabled is 2T. Ok that gives me something else to try.

As for the 2 sticks of RAM "problem" i have had 2 256mb sticks of bh5 run at 250FSB 1:1 at CAS2. This was stable in games and benching.

So not being able to do 250FSB stable with this board and RAM seems fishy.

If using 2 sticks at the same time is the problem then i will probobly RMA this or return it for some OCZ VX. These were sold to me as a pair and rated at PC4400 at 2.5 3 3 7. It would be very disheartening to find out that they will not live up to the "promised specs".

I have tons of experience with tccd and A64. your problem is not your board, or your ram. it's the fact that there's no way a 754 rig can handle 2x512 at that speed. You have a few options:

run 1x512 stick for now and you can probably do around 280-300mhz at 2.5-3-3-X 1T

sell dfi and buy 939 setup and use both your tccd

send the gskill back and get ocz vx and a booster and run at 2x512 @ 2-2-2-x between 240-260mhz

or rma and get 2x256 gskill kit and you can run the high mhz on the ram fine with your current board.

when all is said and done, your ram at 2-2-2 timings at 250-260 mhz is going to be comparable in performance to tccd doing 290-300mhz at 2.5-3-3-x

I vote on the VX.

yeah, the problem isn't your ram, it's your expectations of that ram on that platform.

you are the exception and not the rule. Most 754 cpus don't have a mem controller that will allow 1GB of ram on the single 64 bit mem controller that high. Some will, but MOST will not. To expect 754 to run that high is not right. Even some 939 cpus wont allow that high due to memory controller on the cpu not behaving.
To blame ram is obtuse!

comparing different brands, the only memory capable of running high 1:1 with 2x512Mb was the A-DATA DDR600 , all the others had low results;

with 1 stick 300Mhz is possible with a bit of tweaking:)
