View Full Version : 6800/GT/Ultra PCIe sightings?

I'm sure I'm not the only one on these forums looking to do an SLI setup, but I'm not keen on dual 6600's, and 6800's in PCIe format seem to be rare/expensive at the moment. So I thought I'd start an official sightings thread - here's the best I've found so far:

MSI 6800 256MB PCIe - $340 (http://www.gameve.com/gve/Store/ProductDetails.aspx?sku=VC-MSI-0066)
eVGA 6800GT PCIe - $449 (http://www.sharbor.com/products/EVGN5300004.html)
Same as above - $445 (http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=190659&AFFIL=FRG&NR=1)

And I don't see a price on a 6800 Ultra PCIe anywhere that isn't absurd . . . but those with keen eyes, prove me wrong!!

I fear when companies start coming up with "matched pairs" of cards and convince people they need 2 of the same ones or else they wont work, not only that, they will add 10% to the price of them. They did it with memory, why wouldn't they do it with VCs too?

Sad but true, you can practically guarantee you'll start seeing SLI matched pairs . . .

Newegg had them for awhile...I'll edit this post when I find it again.

Do you think it will be possible to unlock the extra pipes on these 6800nu PCIe cards? Or will an SLI config make low level changes impossible?

Of course, you could always hook up one card at a time, and do a BIOS reflash if that'll enable the pipes, but who knows . . .

there should be drivers coming out to let u use unmatched cards, it happened with the voodoo 2. If its posible nvidia or a 3rd party will end up getting sorted

I think if your using two 6800 of the same chip type it shouldn't cause too much trouble...I don't think...wouldn't be surprised if it didn't preform as well...kinda like mis-matched RAM sometimes

i maybe be able to source 12pipeline 5ps (hardware locked) 6800 gto's running at 350-900 for $400 a piece

EX dell gpu's

$445 for a proper GT though, whats the point skimping on a few $

Any of these places ship to the UK?

one of em does but for 16% of the order value, also their policy is that they are not responsible for import tax or the clearing fee

16% on 2*6800gts would be $144 - £72 shipping without import charges
pricey

I maybe able to source PCI-X SLI 6800gto's 12p 5ps for £400 for 2 with a little postage cost, but VAT free

Thanks, but I've actually just heard a friend is coming over for the new year, so where'd be the best place to get a PCIe 6800GT, A64 S939 and SLI mobo >=]

You clearly don't need a matched pair, some nvidia dude said a while ago that it would even work with a 6800nu and a 6800ultra...

I've heard of issues with some that wern't matched pairs. Oh, I think maybe the anandtech review even had an issue with it. So they had to use two 6600 gt's because their 6800 ultra (or was it gt's?) wouldn't work together. Or either hardocp, someone.

and not completely related, but sounds like bad news for people looking for 6xxx pci-e

If these can be had for ~ retail pricing anytime soon, I'm in! BFG says January availablilty, let's hope that means widespread early Jan availablilty and not the usual short-supply, priced to kill late Jan availability ;)

That link would explain the shortage, let's hope nVidia starts thinking straight, sets the bridge to AGP 8x (since it makes about zip difference anyway, especially to SLI peeps running on PCIe 8x anyway), and puts out more of these cards!

Price pressure from the X800XL should help too, I figure, but we'll have to see . . .

that doesn't make anysence to me...why would AGP 12x be important to Nvivida, they're smart enough to know that 8x is more than enough...
