pros
locks are working on all rev2.xx boards
stable and high vcore up to 1.85v
good pcb layout
runs great with bh5
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1runs great with ocz eb
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1runs great with tccd
2x Memory Interleaving?
tracks vtt, ocz booster works up to ~3v

cons
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/images/icons/icon4.gif locks not working on most rev1.xx boards!
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/images/icons/icon4.gif generally starts topping out in the 250's htt (bios 1005.021 beta for rev 1.02)
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1http://xtremesystems.org/forums/images/icons/icon4.gif OVP on VDimm at ~3.15v with a vdimm mod and ~3v with an ocz ddr booster

cpu temperature reading not working correctly

TIPS
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: you have to disable cool n quiet when ocing
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: disable fast writes
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: if you have problems to boot or get your system stable at very low cpu temps try the beta bios 1009.002 or a newer bios version
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: bios 1008 might cause prime95 instability, get the latest bios
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: you need bios 1007.xx or later to get a winchester 90nm cpu working on this board
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: if you have a winchester and your current bios doesnt support it use 1 stick of ram (in slot B1)
then boot from a floppy and flash to 1007 or newer:
1. power down your system
2. Reset cmos
3. boot from a bootable floppy
4. use another floppy with the new bios and the AFUdos.exe program on it
5. type at the A prompt: afudos.exe /ia8v1007.ami
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: 1007 seems to give some people problems with the agp/pci locks, use 1008.002 or later
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: thermaltake xp120 and corsair xl pro wont fit on this board
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: use the promise ide controller when ocing, the via controller is rumored to get unstable when ocing (not locked?)
if you are using the via controller already and want to switch to the promise controller follow this short guide:
1. Copy the PROMISE SATA drivers to a floppy.
2. Turn off your computer and switch your HDD to the PROMISE controller
3. Turn on goto the BIOS ; Advanced > OnBoard Devices Configuration > Onboard Promise Controller [Enabled] > Operating Mode [IDE]
4. In the BIOSchange Boot priority to CD and exit BIOS
5. Pop in your XP CD and press F6 (look carefully for the message at the bottom of the screen)
6. Pop in your Floppy and let XP copy the PROMISE Drivers.
7. Exit install when asked for.
If the above method doesn't work, follow the same steps only let XP repair the existing installation. You should not lose any data.
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: you need a fan connected to the cpu fan slot
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: if your having stability problems unplug low speed fans, low rpms are rumored to make the board unstable
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: if your board has no working locks try to enable them with a hacked bios, works for some boards
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: if you have problems booting with one stick try it in slot3 (counting away from the cpu socket)
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: 1007 seems to give some people problems with the agp/pci locks, use 1008.002 or later
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: bios 1009 beta seems to have coldboot and stability issues above 240fsb (no lock?)

Beta BIOS 1005.021 has the locks working too. the newer ones dont have the locks for 1.02 and 1.01 boards

Try DDR in 2 and 4 and the booster in 3. Make sure the 4 pin connectors are plugged in properly to power and to the booster.

I tried both 1005.021 and 1005.020 and i liked them both.

I was just wondering if Asus had realeased any oficial or beta bios with PCI-Lock already... guess not :(

As for the Booster, i'll try in a minute! :)

Thanks for the repply!:toast:

with the 1003 bios that shipped with my board i could run 220mhz htt easy enough 1:1 with my bh-5. With both the 1005.020 and the 1005.021 did over 270htt and 250htt 1:1 with my 3700EB.

Both beta bios and clockgen/setfsb can be found in my sig.

Iam thinking about that thing if needed but want more info.

most likely his rams in slot 2(dimm_a2) and 4(dimm_b2) like described in the manual. For some reason i got a yellow page that said it needed to be in slot 1(dimm_a1) and slot 3(dimm_b1) for dual channel contricting the manual. Havnt tried mine in slots other than 1&3 however so im not sure how it works there even without the booster.

Have you tried just one stick in slot 1 and the ddr booster in slot 3?

iboomalot
08-05-2004, 05:27 AM
I know when putting together my a8v i put one stick in ram slot 1 and wouldn't boot. It had to be in slot 3. Seems like a very picky board where the ram goes.

let us know what combo works.

I couldn't get the booster past 2.88v in slot 1 . haven't tried slot 3 yet because it touches the ram cover in slot 2.

I get the feeling that this board (1.02) has some sort of over voltage protection. :(

No, but what's the point of using this board without DualChannel... ;) (i'll try it, don't worry).

Ohh, and by the way, what's the normal score in SisoftSandra Mem Buffered benchmark with default settings? I get 4800MB/s but a user with the exact same system gets 5400...

I get this with some A-Data PC4000 with terrible timings @270MHz FSB:

Is your memory running 1T or 2T? You'll notice a huge performance loss if you're running 2T. On my FX-53 I lost 1000 points by running 2T, although I was able to overclock less..... it's a tradeoff I guess.... less memory bandwidth for more speed.

Raptor

I am aware there are several threads about this board and its mods, but I am in the process of consolidating the many threads into a single point of information.

I will be this to many threads it appears, as I continue to see the same questions asked over and over again on the same components. I aim to post as many threads about mods I work on, and consolidate the many other threads and basically condense them into the actual important information versus making members read thru vast numbers of pages looking for the answers they seek.

This is the mods I performed for pkrew on his A8V board. I did them a little different from the other mods I perform as he has graciously decided to send me some items that are going to be very useful to me. I have done the mods so that he has the option to go back to straight stock if he decides to do so versus only having the option of using the installed VRs.

Onto the mods.

A8V Vdimm Mod:

There are several different posted methods for this mod, and I have choosen the method that I would have done if this were my board. You remove R422 and replace it with either a 5k or 10k VR set to 2.135K-ohms (gets to stock voltages).

Note that you do not have to remove R422 to do this mod. I had previously removed it working a one of the other methods for this mod and decided to leave it off. All you need to do is solder a 50K VR to pin #6 of the Vreg chip and GND.

You can see that I set the mod up so that he can use a jumper to go to stock or run modded.

http://www4.ncsu.edu/~rwbradl2/Vmods/pkrew_A8V_Vdimm.jpg

A8V Vcore Mod:

For this mod you remove R167 (near the Vreg), and replace it with a 100-200ohm VR set to 20 ohms.

You can see that I also included a method for him to go to stock using the jumper.

http://www4.ncsu.edu/~rwbradl2/Vmods/pkrew_A8V_Vcore.jpg

Before anyone asks the question about why bother adding the jumper to get back to stock when adjusting the VR will allow the same result....the reason is simple, it keeps the user from having to constantly adjust the VRs. Lets say that you get to a voltage that you like to play with, but from time to time you want to run stock plain and simple...then a simple jumper change and all is good.

Now, if anyone can check these FETs and point me to the one reading Vdd we can work on that. If I dont get a response by tomorrow, I will have to go ahead and ship this out to pkrew so he can get his toy back. ;)

Incidently, this board does not require a Vtt mod as it tracks properly.

Tested up to 3.25v and Vtt was dead on 1.625v. ;)

pkrew

Looks great, Hell-Fire, 3.25 vdimm, more than I expected

Hell-Fire
08-10-2004, 09:52 PM
I dont know if the OVP built into the board will limit that or not bud. I ran it that high, and it was still climbing, without a cpu mounted. Some boards will power up with high Vdimm but not post.

Hell-Fire
08-11-2004, 08:10 PM
I need someone with this board to check something for me please.

Possible Vdd Mod:

http://www4.ncsu.edu/~rwbradl2/Vmods/pkrew_A8V_Vdd.jpg

Here is a blown up location of the possible mod site:

http://www4.ncsu.edu/~rwbradl2/Vmods/pkrew_A8V_Vdd_2.jpg

pkrew, I went ahead with the mod, but please leave it unplugged until we can confirm that it works. Sometimes it sucks to work on these boards without a cpu to test it with. Just unplug the fan header that the VR is connected to and the mod is effectively off.

Hi Guys,

I am new here. I came here because you guys are the best, and know all the newest hardware on the market and I need a little help.

I am building a CAD system that will be running stock. I need the most reliable motherboard solution on the market. I could go with socket 940 or 939. I like Asus stuff, but Wrench tells me that people have problems with the A8V Deluxe motherboard. I am also looking at MSI and Abit as motherboard suppliers. What is your guys experience with these motherboards? What do you recommend as the most stable, trouble-free board?

Thanks for your input!

if the locks aren't working it sucks for overclocking

solution 1 get a bios with working locks and it OCs pretty good and stable.

solution 2 don't OC the board more than 5% and will be fine.

problems mainly are if the locks aren't working and you OC the board past 220 FSB then the SATA becomes unstable. I have a 1.02 board and loaded bios 1005.21 and it runs nice. I can run 2.6 - 2.7 ghz and stock is 2.2 ghz

Since you are going to run stock speeds you will have NO issues.

get the asus and OC that puppy about 10% should be safe and fine. Just make sure locks are working.

Thanks iboomalot and xgman.

I really want to go with the Asus solution cause they are my favorite brand. I have built hundreds of systems with them and only a couple have had issues. I really dont want to go with MSI cause almost every motherboard i bought, i had problems! Abit is great stuff too, but I dont know how there 64 bit lineup is in terms of stability.

Asus has voltage limiting thus Vmods don't help.

suppose to have locks on the rev 2.0 mobos

rev 1.02 should have locks but requires a Bios change(1005.21).

Only the 2.0 OFFICIALLY supports locks, but 1.2 has them if you use a BIOS that supports it.

without a cpu its easy to get for instance 3.50v on the A8V. No post above 3.15v though with cpu though.
btw looks great.

First off, I would like to say thanks so far. I stumbled upon XtremeSystems about a week ago, when searching for the best forums for overclocking, with a community that knows what they are talking about. While waiting for my activation, so I can post, I read hours and hours of topics on overclocking, some making me nervous, and some making me think "this shouldn't be too bad".

I buy a computer system once every 2 years to try to keep on top of things, and keep up on computer systems as much as I can. I run a part time home business from my home, building computers for people for an affordable price. The problem is, I have never dabbled in OC'ing, and see now its not about "click this, enable that, do this", but more a work of art, to achieve a balance between heat and performance. Even after a few days of research, I am still a bit scared to start the OC'ing. I have read the typical 'I burned my :banana::banana::banana: up!' all the way to 'it was fairly easy, smooth going, and machine runs great!'. I am hoping to fall in the middle somewhere :D

Before I start, let me give you guys a break down of equipment.

(I only give case information, for airflow reason?)

I believe that’s all the information you need. If not, please tell me, and I will post it asap. I have NOT hooked this machine up, its all sitting in boxes at my feet, because I am waiting on my CPU cooler, that should be arriving Friday, but thought I would start my post now, so by then, I am armed with some information.

This post is just a standard "Help me, I am a newb" post, and I guess I am just trying to get some insite as to what I should do first. Am I starting in over my head? And if so, where does one start where the waters shallow! I am fairly computer friendly, I work full time at a Techbench fixing computers all day, and have been in the computer repair field for about 6 years now. I spend upwards of 8 hours a day on my computer, sometimes more, so know my way around. I just have not jumped into the OC'ing bandwagon yet, and with my new system, would really like some guidance to get there.

I'm sure I didn't post all the information I needed to, in that case, only ask, and Ill do my best to help you, help me :)

BTW, I have bookmarked this site, because they discuss similar things that I would like to do.

http://www.digital-daily.com/motherboard/asus-a8v-deluxe/

I have also surfed through about the first 10 pages in the forums that come up under Asus A8V.

Where does a newb start! Even better, someone who has a similar setup, that would give me a basic walkthrough. Thank a ton guys,

There is some excellent info on overclocking the A8V here: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=332591

It's a forum thread that has all relevant information compiled in to the first post.

I guess you are a "newb", you spelled NooB wrong ;-)

The first thing I would do if I were you would be to confirm that your A8V is a revision 2.0 board. If you want to OC, you need a PCI/AGP on your motherboard that works. The lock on the rev. 2.0 is guaranteed to work.

Things to consider:

1.) HTT frequency must not exceed 1000Mhz. For the 3500+, the "FSB- for sake of simplicity" is 200Mhz, the HTT multiplier is "5". 200 x 5 = 1000Mhz. If you increase the "FSB", ie- over 200Mhz, you need to use a HTT divider to return the HTT bus to < or = 1000Mhz. On the A8V, it's slightly confusing. In the bios, 1000Mhz=5, 800Mhz=4, 600Mhz=3, 400Mhz=2, 200Mhz=1. So if you used a "FSB" of 250Mhz, you would need to use the HTT setting of 800Mhz (250x4=1000).

2.) Memory- I use the 250 x 10 = 2500Mhz. My RAM is PC-3200, which means it was designed for the 200Mhz "FSB." using the 1:1 memory divider (ie, no divider) would run my memory at 250Mhz, which it won't do at the timings I would like it to run at. So I must use a memory divider. I'm on my laptop at the moment, so I can't tell you what divider I used (I think it wasd 5:3- I can't remember- but it is the next step down from 1:1)(but my RAM is running at 208Mhz at CAS2, 2-5-2-1T timings). Faster timings at a slower "FSB" is better (in most cases) than slower timings at a higher "FSB"

3.) voltages- crank up the mem voltage (to 2.8v anyway), I wouldn't go abobe 1.7v on the cpu with air-cooling.

4.) Use the PCI/AGP lock: ie- set it to 33/66Mhz.

Good luck- read that thread, it explains all of this in great detail and it's all in one place.

Wow, that post you linked is out of control to say the least. Thank you very much, as I will have a few hours of things to go over.

My pleasure CamDog. I just got my A64 setup last week. I bit the bullet this entire time and stuck with my XP cpu/mobo this entire time waiting for S939 to come out. Overclocking the 64 is a lot more indepth than OC'ing the XP, for sure.

Reading this excellent forum and sitting back, relaxing, and watching the pro's be my guinea pig this time around was especially nice. If anyone remembers (or cares) I was one of the guinea pigs when the original AthlonXP was released (along with Oppainter) experimenting with cutting "golden bridges" way back in 2001. I happened to get my XP a week before they were released to the general public. I started a website and posted my results (the website is still up and has not been changed since then, LOL- http://www.oc-athlonxp.com )

also, its prolly mentioned in one of those other threads. but run your raptors on the VIA raid sata ports and not the promise ports if you want to overclock and not loose your install lol.

look between the 4th and 5th pci slot for your revision number, if its a rev1.02 you will need to click the link in my sig and flash to the 1005.020 or 1005.021 beta bios to get a chance at locks. if you have a rev2 just set it to 33/66.

I am going to post a couple pictures of my bios, and settings... These memory settings you guys speak of, ie 2-5-2-1t etc, I see nothing like that in my bios.

Also, do you guys think my setup is running to hot? (2 posts up, I posted temprature)

It makes me very nervous, because the first time I messed with my settings, my machine didn't boot, I had to pop the cmos chip out and start at factory settings again. Is that what you guys do when your, errmm, tests don't work out like planned?

thanks again guys :)

-CamDog

emtp563

CamDog- yes, that temp is on the hot side. If you want to overclock- a better heat-sink might be in order. If your machine won't boot due to wrong settings, there is a safety built in- just power off the computer and restart it. if that doesn't work, use the clear cmos CCMOS jumper on the motherboard to reset the bios to default settings. ASUS calls this CLRTC. Go to page 2-18 in your owners manual to find out how to use this.

I don't have time right now, but I will post tomorrow the exact memory timings. The 2-5-2- moniker refers to the most popular settings- I know there are many others in the ASUS bios. I'll post back tomorrow.

check sandra with the locks enabled then check sandra again with the locks disabled. At a sub 220HTT tho. even set to 1000HT you only get 4xldt with the locks enabled on both the 1.02 and rev2 boards.

I have been using an MSI Neo2 Platinum (Nforce3 Ultra Chipset) but sold this in order to use the Asus A8V Deluxe Rev2.

After building the system, I powered it on and enetered the BIOS. The was no sign of my SATA HDD. then saved and exited be there was no starting of windows. IF I pressed TAB when prompted by the SATA Boot ROM I could see the HD in the array of one disk but I could not amaend anything. Then the Promise RAID detects the HDD but says bios is not installed. The PC then reboots.

I have tried disabling Promise controller and that does not help. If I try disabling the "onchip SATA BOOTROM" then the system doesnt get to POST before it says "NO HARD DISK DETECTED".

I have tried using SATA sockets 1 and 2. Aswell as SATA RAID sockets 1 and 2... none of them detect the HDD.

1) As I was running the same system on the last motherboard, do I need to reformat all the volume inorder to get rid of the old motherboard drivers??

2) What can I do for the single SATA HDD to be detected in the BIOS??

3) Does this sound like my HDD is damaged? But it is strange how the BIOS cannot see the HDD yet the Promise controller and BOOTROM know what type of HDD i'm using??

Please help me,

Many thanks

Well you need to make a raid floppy first check your asus cd en make a floppy drive for the raid controler (there two of them) then when instaling windows xp pro click F6 to instal the drivers for your raid controler

good luck

Cashman boots off the windows cd and at the beginning press F6 when it prompts you to, to install a 3rd party scsi driver. Then after a little bit, it will go into your Floppy Drive and find the correct sata driver that corresponds with your controller and OS being used.

Cashman
11-18-2004, 05:58 AM
thanx mate! So I should have a floppy disk that came with my mobo yeah?? put this into the drive when it asks and it will find the appropriate drivers??

SO I do need to reinstall windows again?? even though its already on the HD?

Why is it that every other motherboard allows me to simply plug the Raptor in without any need for installing the drivers!

If you look under control pannel/administrative tools/computer management/device manager/ you should see "scsi/raid controlers listed." click on it and update the drivers using your floppy of whereever you store them.

Now go to computer management/disk management and you should see the raptor. Format if necessary and should be good to go.

Please correct me if I am wrong but I think I have read that you want to use sata slots 3 or 4 since they are the only ones which are locked for your board.

I have gotten the CPU to run stabily @ 275 but with higher voltage, but I am not comfortable running @ 1.75 on air cooling.

Edit: Why isn't my siggy showing up here, it shows in my other posts?

I just switched over recently from Intel, and I remember reading somewhere that the 939 platform didnt care too much for 4 sticks of memory. I breifly had 4 X 512 sticks in mine ok, the only thing was it was limited to latency timings of the weaker set of Adata PC4000.

Have you been able to use BH-5 sticks alright with A8V? I have, besides A8V, 3000+ winchester and 2x256mb KHX3200 BH-5. I can't run the system stable even at 200mhz on the memory. When memory speed is 200mhz, it won't even go to windows. 166mhz works fine. What could be the problem?

really glad I just found this thread, im having a few problems getting stabilty.

I have:

FX53, Ocz Platinum 3200 Rev2, 74gb Raptor, A8V Deluxe Rev2, 6800 Ultra, Antec 550w.

I was running the system with the 1009.002 bios and at 245fsb I was getting random BSOD and reboots or not rounding errors on SuperPi. (2.5-3-3-10 1T 2.8v) at 200fsb 2-2-2-5 it worked without probs. It seems from this thread that the 1009 early bios (oo2) has problems over 240htt?

I think I will try finding the 1009.004 beta bios and see if that helps. When trying 2T everything seems to be ok but I could really do without the 1000pts loss.

Also is the HTT freq best left at 800mhz, 1000mhz or 600mhz? I know on the Neo2 is HAS to be 3x (600mhz) in order to get any overclock at all.

Could anyone please post screen shots of their "memory configuration" under the Bios... many thanx :)

ps.... is there any reason to upgrade my PSU from an Antec Truepower 550w to either a PCP&C 510 Turbo Deluxe or OCZ powerstream 520w ??

I'm having problem running even at default speeds (loose timing) at 1T. Totally unstable..blue screen and/or prime fail immediately.

Using double sided samsung tcc5's which are supposed to be DDR466 (Adata brand)

AFAIK No Rev 2.00 boards are wireless edition ones (Please correct me if I'm wrong).
Usually you would have to flash to the 1005.002 or 1005.003 BIOS to get the PCI/AGP locks working. No other BIOS version seems to have helped (again, I'm not too sure).
You may have to reset the CMOS to solve your voltage problems. It is surely a BIOS error. Try flashing to a 1009.xxx beta and see if that helps before you rest the CMOS, as it could save you some time.

Are you facing any problems with the x.007 ? Any changes in the settings?

ADATA 4400's have problems with this MoBo. A few guys @ OCF have complained about this. Same symptoms. Somebody was talking about spurious ADATA modules @ OCF (mainly about the PCB's used) but this was in the context of a shady reseller.

Test your MoBo with some other RAM. Also, are you @ 2.8V VDimm?

I've actually RMA'ed (swap) my rams before this with a new pair from Adata taiwan themselves. Both has the same result. So I suppose this is a case of components not liking each other.

Also tried all the vdimm settings but no luck as well.

On bios 1008.3 now...maybe I'll give the 1009.7 a try.

Any suggestions? Should I rid the rams or the board?

I'd get rid of the RAM.

I'm not saying ADATA is a flaky company, but sadly in this case there seems to be an incompatability. I must say that 2 or 3 people reporting problems isn't a definitive cause for panic (more data is required) it does mean that you guys were stuck with a problematic batch.

Clawhammers and Newcastles work with the 1005.002 BIOS.
I don't think there is a solution to your problem. Again, you may have to run through all the BIOSes >1007.xx (betas included) to see what works. AFAIK none of the final versions work. You may get lucky with a beta. I'm curious to know what ASUS Tech support say abt this?

I would recommend any ram with TCCD chips i.e the PQi Turbo or Corsair XMS series.
Also, GSkill 4400 guarentee 275MHz. You may also want to check this place out:-

Hi Folks, a few days ago, I stepped from Intel PIV2.8E (3.8GHz) to this AMD64 (winchester 3200+ A8V deluxe setup).

I scratched my head, flashed the bios to 1009.006 (after reading all these very useful posts) and got this baby running 2750Mhz with a nice 32seconds SuperPI result (I needed 3800Mhz on the Intel to achieve 35s).

Temp readings seem rather low...
Case is Lian-Li, intake: 120mm titan@5V (sidepanel) and papst 80mm@12V (1500rpm). Outtake: 120mm titan @5V (top) and papst 80mm@12V (1500rpm).
PSU is OCZ Powerstream 520W
Watercooling consists of (external from case), reservoir 5liters, Eheim 1250, X2 radiator with 2x Enermax120mm (lowest speed) and Zalman ZM-WB2.
The only mod I did to the mobo is placing an old Zalman Northbridge cooler on the northbridge.

The screenshot is taken with f@h running at 100% for three days (24/7)...
I just started superPI with process-priority to realtime... (did not close f@h)
No stability issues (played FarCry, Doom3 and UT2004 for several hours)...

Strange thing is, room temperature 20.5°C, air from outtakes is absolutely cold, watertemp also... I went to the shop to buy a few temp-probes from CompuNurse to make sure the temp-readings are correct...

(gpu is FX5700 atm, 9800XT rma :s)

I'm using OCZ lld ed. PC3200 2-2-2-5 @ stockspeed atm, asynchronous with cpu... Will try some OCZ PC4000 EL Dual CH Gold ltd's 2.5-4-4-8 when I find some time too check if I gain some performance by running them synchronous with this cpu.

If anyone has more tips and tricks to get optimum performance, please post them... (I know, I should try to go higher, but right now, I need the rig, so I cannot push it and work at the same time :-()

Still using bios 1009.006 ...

OneyedK
12-31-2004, 01:52 AM
@Joor: thanks for posting your results, I verified my temps and in reality they are 2 or 3° higher than what the asusprobe reports, so I can live with that ;-)
? Can you tell me the biosversion you are using ?

@sotr: 48 seconds for those lousy timing is pretty normal on a winnie 3000+
You should gain at least 1 second by changing from 2T to 1T (set the 2T thingy in bios to "disabled") and gain maybe another second when changing to the latest bios (changing from 1008.002 to 1009.006 sure helped me)...
When I booted the winnie 3200+ for the first time I got a 44second superPI score, so no worries, this baby will live up to you expectations.

Mate... I have this same board, FX53 and a Mach II GT (instead of your Vapo).

The problem is because you are using the 1008 Bios. This BIOS only has a max vCore of 1.75v and to get 2.9ghz or 3ghz you will need 1.8v to 1.85v. This is what I need! if you go get BIOS 1006 final (1005.027) then you have a max vCore of 1.8v and will clock higher :)

All bios revisions are here mate... ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/socket939/a8v-deluxe/

I'm sorry, I wasn't reading about AMD anymore since I sold the winnie...
I happen to be a HT-addict and needed an Intel rig again ;-)
i560 on the way

Problem with the A8V deluxe (even rev.2) is the poor 1:1 performance... (with bios 1009)
So that's the reason why I needed to use that strange divider...
Other people here seemed to reach higher 1:1 frequencies with bios 1008, so you might try that...
By the way, you upped the vcore, I guess?!
All the info you need should be in the screenshot ;-)
Nothing fancy about it... running 1T...

But the thing is Im getting these crashes with my overclocks. Not on standard settings. I hate this memory. I see people all over the place hitting atleast 2.2 and exactly my specs. I loosen the timings a bit and nothing, same crashes in game. I think this memory is only able to do 2.2.2.5 on standard settings. It does achieve what it promises. But on this platform it seems you have to tweak the hell out of all the settings to walk away with nice OC. On intel, you just get high rated ram, UP the bus and loosen the timings and Bam, super OCs. I ran my old prescott 2.8 to 3.7 on air using Kingston HyperX PC4000 @ 3-4-4-6. Im having NO luck with this board. Dont get me wrong, by no means is this a crappy computer. This baby is fast, I just want to push its envelope and squeeze the goodies out of it. Second, drop the menory timings to 2.5 3 3 10 1T (by disabling 2T command)
third putmemclock on Limit 2:1 400 instead of auto
Raise memory voltage to 2.7 instead of auto (2.8 volts do not work on some memory combination?)
Raise cpu voltage to 2.5 to start. You can go up to 2.60 if needed later on.
first try at 220FSB and 10 multiplier.
You slould be able to boot at these settings.
By using CPUZ and clockgen program, check if the memory is working at 220FSB divider 10 with CPUZ.
Use clock gen to up the FSB slowly to find the limit. You should be able to go much higher.Use SuperPi to check stability at each step.
You can also change the multiplier in Windows with clockgen.
Monitor your cpu temperature, stay below 55C.
Have fun.
Once you find your max, change the settings in BIOS to the required freq.

My memory topped out at 225mhz 2.5-3-3-6 (i tried 10) I wont go a drop over 225. I did pass SuperPI 32M, and 3dmark looped. Now, that I have found this out, Would i be able to push this any further with better memory. Also, How much does lowering the HTT to 800 effect the performance. If i do my math right...... now that Ive lowered it to 800, my memory running at 225 X 4 would give me a 900mhz bus. Is that right? My everest benchmarks are way up after i lowered the HTT and did my overclock. Please explain if i am taking a hit on performance by doing so. I couldnt get my CorsairXMS stable with HTT1000 and the memory running anything past 205mhz.

By the way I give up on this motherFunken board and platform. From the get go its been nothing but a pain. I had to try 4 motherboards in order to get my baby to boot. All that after i had to do weird shat to get it to boot. I cannot get this board stable past 2.2ghz. That blows. Sure I settled on this only because this was the only one to post with my 3200+ 939 proc. But still. I pass ALL benches and it crashes on crappy ET. Im going back to Intel. I never had a Proc not boot, I could easily push the bus to OC, and I never had to worry about getting the voltage, timings, ddram voltage, fast writes, and all this other crap in sequence just to get stable. F that. Sorry Ive ranted, I know that alot of you have had good experiences but Im fed up. Peace. :p:

I think this was the only board with a recent bios at the time that could boot. USing the place the dimm in the third slot trick and than using afudos. None of the other boards even booted. Nothing. No post. I will admit, that this is a fast platform, But when you want to push it,,,,,.... just even a tad. I cant get it to go anywhere. I checked all my voltages etc and have used all the tweaks possible. I even took out this ram, took out the hyperX 4000 from my prescott 2.8 build out. The hyperX (higher speed rated memory) still gets crashes even though passing all test, with the timings of 3-4-4-8. I took the Corsair 2-2-2-5 Rated Memory and it ran my 2.8 to 3.4 with no problems at 3-3-3-6 without having to do anything. It passed all benchies and played my game without any crashes. I even have a cheaper thermaltake 420psu in there. I just dont get it.

I just got a v2.0 A8V and a 044 3000+ winnie. New machine i built to replace my barton 2500 @ 218x10. I went with a VIA chipset instead of a Nforce to give VIA a chance again. I havent had a VIA board in AGES.

Whats the deal with the AGP drivers in the 4 in 1? I have installed the 4.51 drivers and find them to run pretty good. If i dont run with them , i get a tad less performance in benches.

So far im prime stable at 238x9 @1.5v my ram is running 8-3-3-2.5 @ 2.7v. Im running Sync with FSB....HT is 1000 (x5). I do have a few strange questions though.

In regards to HT@1000 vs 800, is there anything to be lost of gained from either?

*EDIT* I got the USBs working...for some STUPID reason...my Coolermaster case has the 1394 connector in BLUE....yes the same BLUE that the USB headers on my board has. I had them plugged in backwards. I guess i didnt cause any damage to the board, it seems to be working now. Even though doing it, says it will damage the mother board in the manual.

I cant remeber stepping of my chip, but it seems to me that i might be able to run higher then this. I have got into windows at 245 x 9 but get all sorts of weird BSOD shortly after.

Specs listed below are correct for new machine

HT 800 with an fsb of 250Mhz equals HT 1000 with an fsb of 200Mhz...
So on the HT-side, there is no difference in performance between the two...

When overclocking, x4 (HT800) is the setting to go for.
People with very good memory who are able to do more than 275fsb will have to swich to x3 (HT600)...

On most boards, 1100Mhz on the HT side is no problem (HT800, x4, 275Mhz fsb). Some will reach even 1200, but I couldn't keep the A8V stable at 1200...
--> 245*5 = 1225Mhz (that's what you tried) seems to be too high for your board (causing those bsod's)
--> switch back to HT 800, up the fsb to 250Mhz and feed the vCore 1.55Volt
Ah yes, the TCCD-chippies will be happy with 2.8V, 2.5-3-3-7 should work fine until 260-280Mhz, depending on the quality...

Last thing, don't forget to set the AGP/PCI fequency fixed to 66.66/33.33...

scorp

OneyedK : How did you manage to get to 1200 HT ? Because I have noticed that if I leave HT 5x (1000) and I pass a certain fsb (~210-220 MHz I think) it will auto-drop to 4x (it will not show in the BIOS, but if you check CBID or any other utility that shows you the HT freq. you'll notice that you are running at 4x HT).

HighLife : Have you tried a little more vcore ? The A8V undervolts by ~0.05V and the vcore is not that stable as well. So your 1.5v will in fact give you some 1.40v-1.45v, depending on the quality of your PSU. As a general advice you should lower your HT to always keep it under 1000 MHz (but somehow my board seems to lower it automatically from 5x to 4x ... not sure if any board does that).

OneyedK
01-24-2005, 01:21 PM
HT speed was set to 800 in bios...
so actually that's x4
so with 300Mhz fsb you get an actual 1200Mhz HT
--> wich I could not get stable :(
--> 1100Mhz or 275Mhz fsb was no problem at all...
the autodrop from x5 --> x4 works, but it stays there afterwards, so if you get to high in fsb x 4, the thing simply crashes or gets unstable...

HighLife

I set it to 1000 and bench/prime.....ran fine at 240x9 1.55v in bios (speedfan and asus show 1.55-1.6). 7 3 3 2.5 timings.

I turned it down to 800 and rebooted, set to 245 and it wasnt stable =(

Im using pretty good ram...TCCD seems to have high rating for overclocking. Im using PQI PC3200 Turbo 2x512.

I think im limited to my chip....oh well.....369mhz overlock isnt bad for a chip that cost me 100$ used. =)

I got my A8V system a month ago along with my winchester 3200+.
Im using bios ver. 1009 final.
Also i have a pair of Corsair twinX XMS4000pro 1Gb dualkit.
I cant however get them to run 1:1 (or in the bios 2:1). It just goes black. not even bios screen. And thats at 250MHz FSB.
I can however get my FSB up to 260 (more would be great but nooooo :-(..) and then set my ram to auto. Then they run at 216MHz. the system runs fine at this point.
But im disapointed that i cant run my RAM at 1:1 and with my watercooled rig i cant get the FSB over 260MHZ either...
Anyone got any ideas??

Nope, you don't have too :D ... just write it. I usually use the Asus Update from Windows. Just select "Update BIOS from a file" and select the BIOS you want to write.

It is recommanded to leave the "Clear CMOS" checkbox on :D ... After a flash to 1010.002 from 1009 final, my 1.50vcore jumped to 1.70vcore, while in BIOS I still had the same 1.50V slected. After selecting another value (1.525v), rebooting and selecting again 1.500v, the vcore "problem" was solved.

Ok back from the dead boys. I sold my 3200XL 1GB Corsair kit and traded it in for PDP Patriot 3200+XBL and that did the trick. I new it had to be the memory because I went on a ton of diffrent forums and performed every trick that was advised to me. The revision on that corsair memory was 1.1. I dont know if that matters. I think that both versions are based on the TCCD chips. I wonder how come they couldnt run stable on any OCs on my baby. Im now happily pushing 2.3ghz at 2-3-3-6 1T 2.7volts, 5.25 core. HTT 800. I passed Prime95 torture test as well I now can play all meh games. This puppy is blazing fast. Im sure I could push it much further, but this is good for now. I dont see another 100-200mhz giving much of a gain in my games. I have my 6800GT OCed to ultra speeds, and I havent had any slow down in games yet. Ok end of my crappy rant. Im glad I didnt give up on this board, and give it a bad name. It is solid. Peace out.

PS
Thanks for all the help.

Hey what does the HTT effect? I ran benches on 1000HTT and 800HTT and I dont see any diffrence. What does it do as far as performance goes. On intel I notice going fron 533mhz bus to 800mhz bus was huge(least I noticed)

scorp
02-04-2005, 12:55 AM
The HTT has a very minimal impact on performance. Basically the HT bus is used only to communicate with the PCI cards or with the AGP card, as the memory controller is placed on the CPU.

On Intel platforms however the bus is used for transfers with the memory. So an increase in FSB, will also give you more available bandwidth for memory transfers and the P4 is a very bandwidth-hungry architecture.

Not sure. It depends on luck. I have a very bad winnie. And I still reached 2300 @ 1.550v (keep in mind that A8V undervlots and the voltages have a tendancy to "jump" around as well ... I usually have ~1.520v, but on ocasions it drops to 1.502v or jumps to 1.550v). As a general rule I try to keep my CPU temperature (in full-load ... I get that by running 4 x BURNK7 at the same time) under 50C. And keep the HTT under 1000 MHz. If you go beyond 260 MHz it would be wise to chose 600MHz for the HT multiplier.

You will most likely have to set higher timings for your RAM in order to go 1:1.

You might have a very bad Winnie as I do. Disabling AGP Fast Writes doesn't seem to do anything for my OC. With or without it the results are about the same for me.

Your PDP is TCCD baset, so you should try setting the voltage to only 2.7v and maybe try a higher TRAS (8 instead of 7). Also I have red about people who had problems with this memory on the A8V. Maybe try HTT600 as well.

And I don't really know how you got to 2.3 GHz (what multi were you using ? 9.0 ?).

You could try to go with 9.0 multiplier. And to eliminate the memory issue set the 3:2 divider. That way you'll get 200 MHz for the memory only when you'll reach 2400 MHz with the CPU. See if this way you can push the CPU further. If not ... than you probably hit the limit of the CPU.

I made it to 2.37 GHZ with these settings. This memory must have a grace period before the loosen up or something. I say this because I tried the same settings when I first bought them and couldnt go over 2.3.

2.7Volts

1.525 VCORE

Passed 24hour Prime95 stress test.

I dont think I can get it any higher. Using a lower multiplier I dont think i would be able to push it past 2.4 because this memory is only rated to do 533mhz(PC4200) so......................... 266 X 9 = 2394

Prime95 and memtest are totally stable, I excluded faulty drivers (been reformating with different combinations for over a week). I also tried three different graphic cards, all have similiar problems, but only on my board (same drivers works perfectly on other computers). that would rule off faulty graphic card, Tested both 1009 Final and 1010.03 beta bioses aswell. I have a problem - when I run games, mouse keybord/music playback slows down to unbearable levels(on old drivers), or just produces tons artifacts(on newest, hacked ones) or tons of BSODs. Mobo doesn't have any physical damages.
Any suggestions to fix the problem?
Except trashing that f%&%&## piece of junk of course.....

Have you tried a fresh install of Windows. Several games? Try 3dmark2001SE bench also. That prob sounds wierd. Are you using the same memory and video card from previous builds?

Scorp, what if its just this motherboard? I see alot of ppl going way much higher on a MSI NEO2 PLAT. What do you think?
:slobber: :slobber: :stick: :slobber: :slobber:

It is possible. A8V tops out at ~280-290 MHz. I am waiting for the DIF nf3 for s939 to appear and depending on the results I might change the A8V :).

Have you also tried 8.0x multi an see how far you can go with the FSB ?

Lads...

I cannot seem to get stable on this board when I set the memory to run any higher than 220/225 ? ? I have OCZ Platinum 3200 Rev.2 that have done 275 in a Neo2.

WHenever I set the tiimings to 2.5-3-3-10 (2.7v) at anything above 220ish I get BSOD or errors in Test #6 on Memtest (OCZ Support Forum tells me thats Mobo related).

I am using a SATA drive (Raptor) plugged into the "SATA_RAID 1" slot and have the BIOS set to Promise IDE MODE. Have I got the HD in the right slot or should it be in another one?

Whenever I get the BSOD, when I reboot, Windows tells me about my serious error and then conforms that it was a "Device Driver Error"?

Is this just the worst overclocking motherboard or does it just not like my RAM? Either way its annoying and means I cannot wait for the DFI Nforce3 AGP 939 board to arrive.. if its half as overclockable as the Nforce4 illbe happ :)

It sounds as though I dont have working locks or summat?

Will give it a try right now :)

EDIT : The first beta bios that I am not going to use :). It doesn't boot in dual channel mode :stick: . No problems encoutnered in single channel mode.

this one seems to set the Timing at 2T, regardless of what you set in the BIOS. If you set the Timing at 1T from A64Tweaker it will work fine.

But then you would have to do it every single time............ right? I hit 2.38 with my 3200+ FYI. Heres my findings..................

1T, 2.5-3-3-7, 2.7V, 1.5vcore, 4X HTT.

that newest bios does definitely help with memory problems, if certain memory doesn't work with the board, this bios may help U :)

it helped me too, but it did still something wrong because i did have to reinstall windows after i put the same settings which was with the 1010.003 bios.

and well.. its going to the right way i think :)

ps. sorry for bad english :/

I just bought one of these suckers real cheap to try out. Will it run something like 275x10 with TCCD and a good Winnie which does it on other boards? I am under impression 1008 bios is the best?

From what I know A8Vs and TCCDs aren't always the best friends. Theoretically this boards can go up to ~290 MHz, but not 1:1.

Still seems to have a problem : if you disable 2t Command Rate from the BIOS (at least on Winnies) you are still stuck with it :D ... so 2T is there to stay unless you use A64 Tweaker :)

I am wondering if some of you are getting some weird freeze in win xp pack 2.
I am using the via sata controller not in raid. I have 2 drives.
Once in a while, about every 2 weeks or so, the system gets me a message like "Writing to drive r: failed" which is part of the second drive, then nothing else works, when i close the system, it takes forever and gives me many many messages stating again that writing to drives has failed.
After shutting down all power to reset the computor, when i boot the system, it does not see the 2 sata drives anymore or sees the second one as a corrupted name. After many many resets, it finally does, but then it gives me the message "overclocking error" even though i am not overclocking and the system takes many tries to finally enter windows as it stalls on that message. When it finally enters windows, my wireless mouse does not work anymore and the only way to make it work again is to install a wired mouse and reboot (the resets buttons on the mouse does not do anything). After that, if i change back to the wireless mouse, it works again and finally all is fine. This sometimes takes an hour to get the whole thing working again.

After the system is finally working, it will then work for a couple of weeks without a single hickup, until i get the same problem.

What do you think, does this problem comes from the via sata controller beeing unstable or intermittent?
Should i try to switch to the promise controller?
I generally do not overclock.

thanks for the answer, but i tried 1008.final. 1009.final, 1010.002, 1010.003,1011.005,1011.007 and 1011.final.
There is no change to speak of.
It happened again last night, after an hour of unsuccessfull reboots, i resetted the bios with the clear cmos jumper on the mobo, the next boot was immediately ok. At least i now know how to fix it fast, it is just a pain in you know where.
In the manual, it says that closing the machine completely resets the BIOS, and that there is no need to reset with that jumper, it is a bit false apparently.

I have a weird problem with my a8v-deluxe. I am using the 1011 final bios, although I have tried others. Whenever I kick my fsb over 262 my hard drive performance on my raid 0 array (promise controller) drops dramaticly. I can run my fsb al the way to 300 with no stability issues, prime stable etc, but the drive perfomance always drops. I run my memory sync with my fsb. I tried different memory timings, a looser memory divider, lowered the htt multi, but nothing makes a difference. I was thinking of switching my array over to the via controll er to see if it makes any difference.
Basicly i am wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I really would like to run a faster fsb (htt). Is this just an issue of the lock not working correctly, I do have a revision 2 board.

i think that this board is a :banana::banana::banana:, with a memory over 512 megs. It works only on stock clocks. Cant overclock none, it just crashes or jamms in 3D, prime will work for hours.

i thought that it could be the processors memory controller too. not sure though. Memtest86 will too run for hours with the same overclocking than with the 2x256MB memory.

any ideas?

2x512MB HyperX wont work at all. :( kinda crappy to play with 512MB(2x256MB Twinmos, 2.5GHz etc.)

now i'm running with stock clocks and 1.5GB memory...
oh and the bios is 1010.003 Beta.

According to many reviewers this board normally tops between 250 to 260 fsb, it rarely works higher than that. Mine tops at 252, take whatever it gives you. 262 seems very good. What memory are you using? Is it working at 1:1?
I am using the VIA controller but it seems to give me some weirdness also, but you can try yours.

I am using mushkin level 2 pc4400 2x512mb in dual channel. Yes I am running 1:1. It stinks because the board will do 300 1:1, but whats the use if it loses performance. Thanks for the reply

If it is any help, I had three of these boards. First one hit a wall at 265Mhz, second one did 335Mhz fine, couldn't take the memory 1:1 (BH-5), and the third did 257mhz. This was all with same cpu, memory, psu, everything the same, just different mobo. I guess the 2nd one was a freak :D

I got the rev. 2.0 and uses 1008.003 bios, the raid sata controller (red) but not in raid, for my raptor 36 gb.

When i tried for fsb 270, i couldnt boot, and i got the post "no harddrive detectet". I had to clear cmos, to get into bios after that.

Is there still a problem with the locks, or could it be something else...

I'd like to know more about your system or special settings/tweaks you may have done to get to 267? I've been kind of stuck at 260 with loose mem timings so I think it's the cpu or the motherboard. I'm thinking it's the motherboard becasue I can prime for couple of hours and more at 280 if I boot from something called the Ultimate Boot CD and run prime from there rather then windows. Just looking for suggestions.

How do i update bios... The newest from asus is the 1011, in zip format. Do I unzip it ?(Then i get a AMI)
or just uses it as it is - on a blank floppy. With EZ flash?

Dont wanna crash the board....

(By the way, when i checked Cpu-z, it said my motherboard was rev. 1.xx , but on the board is printet 2.0. Is cpu-z wrong or is it the board?)

CPU-Z is wrong, it does that on my board too and i have rev. 2.0

The best way to update the bios is within windows with the software from the cd of the asus a8v, i think it is called update or something.
You have to unzip it first and put the file in the same folder as that software.
