Probably only good for U.S. (maybe Canada), but the DVP642 DVD player from Philips can be had for as low as $33.94 at Amazon.

Go to http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000204SWE/102-4890692-6542518?v=glance , "Add to Shopping Cart", sign up for the Amazon Visa for $30 off.

$33.94 shipped free after the $30 off. Pay the first bill then toss the card or keep it for 3% back on Amazon purchases.

This is currently the hacker's favorite DVD player. Plays (...) DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/+RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD, MP3-CD, MPEG-4, Picture-CD and DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x, AVI. 4x video upsampling enhances all outputs.

Also plays JPEG, mpg, Xvid, PAL DVDs, PAL Divx, KVCD, SRT. It also has Progressive scan and 4x upsampling. You can just dump these files on a DVD and it will start playing them. No need to specially format the disk.
