What distro of linux are you using?
Have you tried to reinstall it yet?

Sounds like a X server problem (the graphical interface isn't working). Try reinstalling it, and tell it not to load X by default. It may be something like 'use command promt'. This is also known as runlevel 3, as opposed to runlevel 5, which you are in now. If you can access a command promt, you will be able to troubleshoot the problem and fix it.

Good luck.

Even if XFree doesn't start, you can try CTRL-ALT-F1 to get a shell. Depending on the distro (I'm not sure about Connectiva), you might also hit CTRL-ALT-F12 to get a display of kernel error messages. Not all distros use this, though.

What kind of video card are you using? If we knew, that would go a ways towards helping us help you. Is it, by any chance, an NVIDIA card in a laptop?

Im not familliar with that error, or that version of linux. But it sounds like video driver problem. pick the 640x480x32 when installing I have seen many installs fail when people pick higher res and the install incorrectly picks a video driver.

How far does your machine boot?

Can you get to a command prompt?

Was it working?

thats an XFree86Config Error.

Usually when i get that error, I havent correctly set up my monitor's refresh rates properly. edit /etc/X11R6/XFree86Config.
