yes it is official i dont think i will be buying one though becuase according to the inquirer (these are the links http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19592 and http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19535) creative only changed some firmware and a few other small things. there are no real changes to the board or hardware itself. It is basically an Audigy 2 ZS platinum that has been signed by the engineers, has newer firmware, and is $100 USD more expensive than the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum. i dont think that either of these things makes it worth upgrading from my Audigy 2 ZS gamer.

there's no audigy 3, my guess, because 3 is an unlucky number (in japan?)

Kind of strange. I thought 4 was the "unlucky" number in Japan. I thought "4" was somehow tied to death. I mean that is why Arctic Silver went from AS3 to AS5. I believe one other computer product ( of some sort, can't remember which or what ) also skipped 4 for that very same reason and went straight from 3 to 5.

oh yeah... your right lol. I swear I've heard 3 is unlucky somewhere though.

Ok.. next guess then. The zs was supposed to be 3 and the marketing department screwed up.. 'oops' :)

First of all, though it is not highly updated, it is NOT the same card with newer Firmware update. Simply more rubbish on the Inq's part.

At $249 to $285, only a recent price cut to $180 from $239 for the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro makes the price look high.

Also read those Buyer reviews while at Newegg?

When the Audigy 4 first darkened our doorstep we looked forward to seeing what new audio goodness Creative had in store for us. There are some new things here, like some new bundled software, and there are even new D/A converters that deliver a bit more dynamic range.

They gave it an 8 and also lists the MSRP as $249, slightly lower than Newegg's $274 but that $180 for the older model doesn't look so bad at all. I'll stick with my Audigy2 ZS though.

On board sound can cause an 8 to 14% Frame rate hit to performance. I saw what MaxPC mag said about the the New Philips Sound Card and made the statement about discrete cards being abandoned. I don't think so. Read page #96, Dec 2004? They missed the part about the Audigy 2 and up supporting , DTS and other THX certified formats. Been testing that since UT2K3 launched BTW. Almost NO hit to the Processor.

Half Life 2 and Medal Of honor Pacific Assault suport DTS, and the the Creative supports this in Hardware. MOH PA also support EAX 3. It is not passed on the the Processor like motherboard based AC-97, Intel's new one, Nforce's Sound Storm, VIA's Envy 24HT or etc.. Nforce can encode but passes off Decodes or sends a RAW signal to be decoded at the source. This causes a Delay or latency.
