Alright every other core has a thread. This is the Winchester one ^.^

I've just got hold of the following:

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
Winchester 3200+
1GB OCZ PC4400
Thermalright SLK948U
Gigabyte X800XT

and i'm using it alongside my samsung spinpoint 80GB SATA 150 and hiper 520W PSU.

Just started OCing this baby today and already i have 2650Mhz gaming stable @~1.63V, with idle temps currently at 32°C and load at around 38°-40° with an 18° sys temp.

What have you guys got? please quote cooling and give screenies, plus any tricks/tips you have for getting this chip to go faster!

Also reccomendations on max Vcore/Vmem, anyone killed one of these yet??

I know saaya already made a Winchester OC thread, but it got lost in the rubble. Probably because the thread was made the day the Winchester was made available, and wasn't stickied.

Nice result shinymod...90nm is looking very good.

shinymod, what u mean with "OC" ?

stable or not?

my 3200+ does only 2500MHz @ 1,625V 3d/primestable.....but it can boot with 2700MHz @ 1,700V....

about to get my winchester next week.

What is the safe voltage range for these chips? What is the default voltage on them also?

Kanati
10-28-2004, 05:03 PM
My 3200 winchester needs almost 1.8 v to get stable at 2.5. It will boot at 2.6 but it won't stay there long. I'm having to run at 2.4 with 1.63 vcore to be stable. I don't think I got a good chip :( .

jjcom

whats your temps. I nice heatsink may fix this problem.

Kanati
10-28-2004, 08:27 PM
At 240 x 10 at 1.63 vcore, it runs 40 C idle and 53 C after several hours of prime using a Thermalright XP90. Temps reported by nVidia system utility on MSI K8N neo2 plat.

2650mhz @ 1.63V was stable enough to game on but would produce superpi errors halfway through 1M, i can boot to 2700 @ 1.7V but it wont get superpi stable even up at 1.8V. i've just tried a superpi at 2650 with 1.68V but it still wont quite make it. I cant wait to get this thing under a prometia... think it'll give me that bit extra to get it to 2750-2800ish stable. just gotta raise the cash first.

by the way... odd quirk with the msi k8n neo2 plat, anyone else found that even after installing the mobo drivers (several times...) windows doesnt let you standby, or turn off automatically after shutdown!? (e.g. no ATX function) it's bizzare...

EDIT: crunchtime, default voltage is 1.4V but mine will run stock at 1.2V quite happily

Very Nice O/C's :toast:

lil off the topic: Will Winchester cores come in retail/PIB versions? I haven't seen any Canadian retailer carrying OEM A64's NC/CH/WC so far :(

My 3000+ is Prime stable at 2.6Ghz but the 3200+ can only do 2.5Ghz at the same settings. They're watercooled with a full load temp of 53 degrees for both. Paired them with the MSI K8N NEO2 board.

Here is mine:

A longer than usual stress test

But, Im underwhelmed with the low overclock, on my Epox 9NDA3+. My 939 3000+ is StressCPU stable at 2300MHz (as above) air cooled, but errors at 2340MHz.

**The unusual thing is that, a friends 90nm 3000+ clocks 2450 stable on his Abit board, but that same chip cant achieve even 2300MHz on his 9NDA3+!!!**

Anyone else have a 9NDA3+?

Just put mine together, getting 9x330 with occasional reboots, 9x320 solid as a rock with a 3000+ on a Mach1 filled with r290.
I am sure this CPU has more left in it, but the damn htt/ldt is holding me back. The only setting it will boot at above 300mhz is 2.5x..... does anyone know of a way to increase the max htt? Would cooling the chipset help, or is there any volt mods I can do?

quality OC mikem! what vcore is that?
in terms of my OCing i discovered today that this board doesnt like TRAS = 11, so i stuck it down to 8 and got 9x285 straight away! then i tried 290fsb and the memory (@2.85V) wouldnt take it... which unfortunately corrupted my windows install before i had a chance to try 10x270 or 10x265 again. i'm re-formatting now though, so i should get a 10x270 run in before work, wish me luck!

I've got 2.4 so far with stock volts and my ram will not go any higher without doing a volt mod. Are there mem dividers on this board cause i sure as hell can't find em. My bh-5 sticks are hating 2.85v only =/

mikem
10-29-2004, 04:03 PM
Sure there are mem dividers... under dram configation just change the 200mhz down to 166mhz.... you should be good to go

This is my initial run so far and i can't figure out how to get more volts out of the 3.0 bios that i'm using. If you know chime in so i can put 1.7 to it and see what it'll do. I can post at 2.8ghz and get about halfway into windows then it bombs. With 1.7v maybe i could boot but who knows.

Mine:
http://www.akiba-pc.com/939/3500.jpg

Cooling:
XP-120 + 120mm papst ngl
PIC (http://www.akiba-pc.com/939/939stuff2.jpg)

Runs Spi1M @ 2572MHz w/ default Vcore (1.408V)
with sligtly higher Vcore (1.63V) a bit better:

SuperPi 8M => 2674MHz (http://www.akiba-pc.com/939/spi8m_2674_5m43s.gif)
SuperPi 1M => 2711MHz (http://www.akiba-pc.com/939/spi1m_2711_31sec.gif)

Think that this Gigabyte mobo I'm useing is somewhat Phucked - superpi is about the only software that actually runs without errors. Gotta try with other mobo and see if the results improve.

Hmm... There sure doesnt seem to be much difference between the 3000,3200 and 3500 in terms of max clock...that higher multi would sure be nice though ;)

macci
10-30-2004, 10:13 AM
Well there the same chip basically - just different multi. w/ S754 stuff I was able to get 50Mhz higher clock out of 3000+ than 3400+. Higher default clock doesn't always mean higher OC result. (as we all know).
I would have taken the 3000+ s939 model but only the 3500 is available here at the moment.

mikem
10-30-2004, 11:02 AM
Macci...would better cooling on the chipset lead to higher htt:?
I know several months ago I thought I remember you doing an LDT Vmod on one of your s754 boards....did that have positive results?

I cant wait to see your results when you start cooling that puppy!

macci
10-30-2004, 11:10 AM
Heh I've never even replaced the nForce default cooler on these A64 boards - no chipset vmods either - just maxed bios values. :D
I did vmod pretty much all the voltages I found on ASUS K8V via mobo and even used pelt+water on chipset but back then AGP/PCI speeds were the limiting factor.

So as far as I can tell chipset cooling ain't a big deal but then again i've never reached 400FSB. 360FSB was 3D stable w/ stock K8N Pro chipset cooler thou.
But the extra cooling never hurts eh?? ;)

mikem
10-30-2004, 11:17 AM

This is the first setup I have ever owned that I cant max out the cpu....
I think this chip could easily do 9x340 or better.....

Welcome to XtremeSystems!

You'll see lots of amazing things around here!
MikeM has a phase change cooler for his CPU similar to a "freezer".... it directly cools the CPU down south of -50C.... this cold temp allows the CPU to run MUCH faster than stock speeds! Hang out here and you'll see 6 gHz Pentium P4's and Athlon 64's at nearly 3.8gHz........

Woah, that is damn sweet on air charlie. I'll almost have the same rig as you. Getting the 1gig of TCCD pqi shortly after. My mobo and cpu should be here on monday or tuesday at the latest.

Are you worried bout the hyper 6 bending your mobo? I was thinking of putting as bootlace strap around the top end of the heatsink and tie it onto a supporting metal bar in my case. Some reviewers stay even if it doesn't fall off and smack onto my x800xt pe! :) It might still cause microscopic cracks in the pcb of the mobo. That's what I'm afraid off. Anything to ease the weight.

Still one excellent cooler for anyone who dares living with it! :)

in good news: i found out i hadnt had the agp/pci lock on :/ it's only on at 67mhz agp apparently, and the bios i have was set to 66 default. so now i have 2650mhz superpi stable (pics later)
however, in bad news: this OCZ RAM is getting on my nerves. it wont even do 280fsb without errors in superpi :(, and it'll only do 275 (its rated speed) at 2T. i think i may replace it already... unless anyone has any tips to get it up to say 290 fsb or so? or to get it running at 1T... also the SATA hard drive now totally refuses to format... so i'll be replacing that too.
EDIT: i have some BH-5 that i'll try later. only 512MB though. by the way... is it safe to run the k8n neo2 and these chips with big vdimm? (like 3.6V or so) because i'd heard of the memory controllers on 64s dieing if you use too much vdimm....

Why not do 255*11 and run your memory at 1:1, couldn't that improve stability rather than using the divider? Is there something I'm missing? I'm somewhat new to this stuff.

What do you think, I have a kick-butt WC system (Cathar block, two pumps, two rads, 1/2" tubing) and an Intel 3.4C plus a brand new Asus P4c800-E Dlx. I also have an eVGA 6800GT AGP 8x. Do you think I should sell that Intel :banana::banana::banana: and get a Winchester and overclock it up the wazoo? What do you think of performance, I will also have to find a buddy to trade soon or something... It sounds like I was a dumbass to stick with 130nm and Intel. hot damn i've decided i'm tired of this 3200+ when the 3500+ go so much better. i'm gonna sell it and get a 3500+. that'll mean i don't need the GSKILL too because i wont need the fsb to keep up with yall :P

by the way i'm gonna get all of your OCs and put them on the first post. so steppings would be good to add too if you have them.

EDIT: ok that's done, i'll keep checking on this thread and maybe add steppings later

3500+ Winchester cooled by Coolermaster Hyper 6. The vcore, temps and rails seem to fluctuate a lot so I'm playin it safe by keep the vcore and clock low. 2.6Ghz is easy to do. 2.7Ghz needs 1.55v. Haven't tried to to 2.8Ghz yet, althought it could probably do it if juiced up. I don't have much confidence in my memory. Mis matched memory, one of them is KHX3000 BH5. Looking to get some new memory soon.

I managed to complete a 3dmark2001 run with 9x342 at 1.88volts, but the high HTT makes things wierd out all over the place(i.e. network card not working)
I think I need to get rid of this 3000, and get a 3200. 10x320 with memory at 260Mhz would be a fast machine.
Here is a pic of the stepping and vcore mod.

Because motherboards are too dumb to register the neg temps so -20*C is to the motherboard sometimes a positive 200*C at which point the computer stops working. It seems like a modded BIOS could fix that tho.....

Well, I got fed up with my 3200+ barely being stable at 1.7 vcore at 2380 so I ordered a 3000+ (I was too poor to get another 3200). For starters I got a week 37 WPAW 3000+ compaired to week 33 SPMW 3200. I'm now running at 2565 (9 x 285) with 5/6 mem divider at 1.52 vcore. I've only been testing it for a short while but right now its doing 33s Super Pi. I tried 9 x 290 to no avail at any voltage, and I need to play with the ram to see if 1:1 is possible, but I must say that I'm pleased with the newer week chip. Now if I just had a 10x multi...

I would say there is a factor of luck involved, but more than luck I'm seeing a trend of the later the chip was made the better it overclocks. Post week 37 seems good. Since the memory controller is integrated that can be a big factor as well.

Retail/OEM shouldn't make any difference - unless you subscribe to the theory that retail CPU's are better due to the longer warranty. (Which I don't)

Well, first I wanna say that this is the greatest place for overclockers I#ve ever seen. This forums've helped me very much setting up my K8N Neo2 Platinum Winchester 3200+ combo today.

My 3200+ is week 0441 and is running with the AMD stock cooler at 2500 Mhz between 1,408 and 1,424 volts at the moment. Well I hope you understand my great english :) I've attached a screenshot.

http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19526&stc=1

Tomorrow I'll try higher clockspeeds with my atotech mc-1 watercooler and an alphacool A64 watercooler. I think there is more speed inside this one.
But, one problem I've at the moment. My Corsair XMS3502 v1.1 256 MB sticks don't want to run with this board. Only beep beed. The two Infineons work properly. I want to use my Corsairs. What is about three sticks? Dual channel possible, or not? Ok, enough questions for the moment.

MCW462-UH (modded to fit amd) or maze4, and a polarflo gpu sink. this with chevette heatercore, 2x150cfm delta 120mm. via aqua 370gph pump (1300). got all this stuff already.

so now I have the oppurtunity to trade a spare 2400+mobile xp for a 225w pelt, a meanwell clone (astec?) PSU w/ 22amps on 12v, coldplate, and another via 1300.

my thinking is if these winnies do so well 2.8-3.0 on air at lowish temps (18-20c window open air

tehn they might really enjoy it if load temps were way down there. problem is, I have no idea if I would get the load temps down that low, or if the chevette could handle that heatload, or if it is worth the hassle, like if it is worth 100mhz or so.

this is a second rig to keep at my fiances house - so I can game while I am there on the weekends, until she does not want to marry me anymore. so ease of boot/danger/noise is a factor. shoulld I jsut go water or are tec a really good idea for winnies? I suppose I could leave everyday overclock low, like 2.2ghz, so that temps would not climb too high and fans could be run a bit lower - then reboot or use clockgen to my settings for bench/games. trouble is I have no idea how much heat I will generate, and if it will necessitate full van voltage at all times. my biggest worry is heeat blowback, where the cpu gets hotter and hotter with the tec unable to keep up. or the GF unplugging the tec psu or waterpump plug by accident. or their power going out (they have crappy power grids in the apt), and when it comes back on, the tec stays powered w/ pump and some fans, and everything freezes over good, then shorts on next reboot when it melts.

totally unsure what to do here. hope im not crapping the thread, jsut had not heard much about the possible effects of tec on this cpu, or even water for that matter. jsut high end air and phase that everyone is intererested in?

First off don't get a delta, the xp coolers just don't benefit that much from having a turbine in your system(I've tried 130CFM vs. 60 CFM with 1-2 degree difference) what good is your computer if you can't hear your speakers ;). Also, if you are getting a neo2 prepare to have some fit issues with that xp-120. If you are on a budget, you might consider getting an XP-90 and a gig of PQI Turbo or PDP XBLk. With the money you saved there spring for the 3500 winnie for the higher multis and (at least to me) seemingly more consistent overclocking.

Hello all,

I am planning on going witha AMD 64 3000+, 1 gig of OCZ Platinum EL Rev. 2, Thermalright xp-120 with a delta fan. Do any of you have a better suggestion on the processor should i get the 3200 for the extra multiplier or is it uneccessary? Is there a better ram that i should get (around 260 price)? Will this cooler do the trick or is there a better air cooler? Thanks for the help! dance! naner , dAnce!!!
ps you want to see something cool set that banana as your wallpaper tiled and play a good tune the little guys gots moves.

Well it looks like I have a dud Winchester 3200+ here. 2400 MHz is all it will do. This is with a hyper 6 and at 1.67 Volts.
This one is 0434TPMW, ordered from Monarch. I am glad I got it to run with BH-5 @ 240 FSB 1:1 but I wish for more clockspeed.

Just the luck of the draw I guess...

Might try another one from a different store later on.

@mindroaster

what kind of cooling are you using? Looks like a heavy freezer.
I hope if my new waterblock arrives 3 Gigs are possible for me too. My MSI runs with 301 MHz and 1:1 RAM (2.5-4-4-9) * 8 or 258 *10 with stock voltage without problems. It would be perfect to run 301*10. If the block arrives on Monday I'll post how many Mhz the system reaches. Is there somebody around who reached 3 Gigs with watercoolling?

I'm still fiddling a lot here and very annoyed I can't get my asus star ice to fit this board! I'm stuck on the stock cooler and don't want to push too many volts through it atm. However, the initial results are good! Now all I need is a damned hsf. I've only been testing with the 137b bios so far.

Not yet, but I promise as soon as I get myself and XP90/120 fitted to this sucker I'll check the stepping on it then and post back. Will likely be mid-next week. The only thing I did to the board when I got it was remove the pigeon dropping under the NB hsf and replace it with a nice layer of AS5. That one I posted above failed prime after a few hours this morning :(
A bit more voltage/cooling should see it stable considering prime ran for a good few hours before it crapped out on me. Have managed 2.593Ghz stable so far. All I can say on the chip for now is it was a boxed retail version :p
Really haven't had enough time to play!

Hi all.

Was fiddling with a Winchester 3200+ and a Abit AV8 for the last few days.
Could not get it stable over 2200 mhz. Found and finally understood the LDT thing in BIOS but would still not make my system stable. Lowered RAM settings etc.

Big discovery: The AV8 did not like FAST WRITES enabled (read it somewher). So I disabled. WOW
100% stable at 2500 mhz now HT=4 , 3-4-4-8 1T (Corsair twinX 1024 pro)
Radeon 9700PRO. Vcore 1.65 Corsair Hydrocool200 EX

Hope this helps others. It sure helped me. Now going for 1:1 RAM/CPU ratio, RAM at 200

Oh.. Temps 51 idle / 55 heavy load (Prime95 12 hours)

I wanted to report my experiances and blunders overclocking a Winchester 3200.

I went with the MSI Neo2, and I love it. I am in Canada, so RAM is hard to find and not cheap! I went with 2* 512 of Kingmax Hard-core PC4000 . My current O/C - timings are as follows, all Prime stable.

FSB 250, mult * 10, mem @ 1:1, timings @ 2.5,3,3,10 (not bad for Kingmax!)
My CPU runs at 41 C idle and 53 Load using a Zalman 7000 Al-Cu.

The real fun started when my Antec Truepower 380 blew up. It came with my Antec Sonata case and while I knew overclocking might be iffy on it, it had 21A of 12 V so I thought it was worth a try. I thought it would at least gracefully shut down under too much load, however after about 12 hours of use it made a very loud popping sound and faded away. I replaced it with an Enermax Noisetaker 470 (hard to find OCZ here), and it's humming along fine.

I will go higher with the FSB, I'm just afraid of another PSU blow up :) PLus my 1M super pi is only 33s so who can complain? I just love this Winnie!

Same thing happened to my Antec 480 TPower. But mine killed itself after onli 5mins of use :P Wonder if its a problem with the Antecs and the MSI mobos

It turns out my Corsair 3200XL is not so good at high fsbs (not stable at even 250fsb no matter the timings :(). Currently running at 235fsb on 2-3-3-6 (295x8.5 with 166 mem divider)

What do u guys think ... should I trade those in for with a US$60 and upgrade to the 4400CPT models with 2.5-4-4-8 in hopes of running 1 to 1 at 290ish FSB.

Is it really worth the upgrade or am I better off sticking to tighter timings with a lower fsb??

i have an Asus A8V and a 3200+ Winchester CPU. I have bought 2x Corsair 4400 Cl2,5 to let run CPU and RAM Synchronuos. But when i let run them synchronous , FSB 260/260Ram Windows Doesnt Boot or hangs up.Even with 250 it doesnt run stable... the only stable clock synchronous is 240:(
I have tried everything i think, i disabled the 2T Command, enabled it... but it runs not stable, i always get bluescreens and so on... what do i make wrong? ive set al Ram Timings manually already...vram.. i dont know more.

i have seen, that some people here have a K8N Neo running synchronous ram/FSB... why doesnt it run with my asus? is it a failure of the Via Chipset?
i can get a Epox 9NDA3+, thats with NF3, should i get it? somebody can tell anything about the epox?

When i set Ram to 200Mhz, my CPU does Stable 2,6Ghz@1,6vc... SuperPi 33sec.

http://xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=41595

Well...consider that another myth busted...There is no x.5 multi bug.

I just ran an experiment...You kids at home can follow along as well!

Ok...running 9.5 x 280...Sandra bandwidth @ 7523/7444

Drop to 9.0 x280...Sandra bandwidth @ 7382/7302

Since I went to a "solid" cpu multi by going to 9, I should of gained pure memory bandwidth because of the "multi-bug" robbing me of about 14MHz...however I not only didn't gain badwidth...I lost even more.

Possibly :bs: :hehe:

hey TodB what is your HT Frequency set at? i have to set my at HT 2. now i have it at 230 i will try high tonight

I'm running x3... and on the Abit AV8 I was able to run 312FSB with a x4 HTT multi..... yeah..... too bad that MoBo had the same AGP problem as the KV8 Pro...

3000+ 0339 here, running with Zalman 7000AlCu..... that's about the MAX MHz that I can load WinXP, not stable....

Currently running @2700MHz, can do more @ that voltage.... will try the GB board in a day or two, also got water and a LS here for more playing :D ;)

Wow nice! Are you Irish? :toast:  :toast:

Glad 2 see that the cricual ballistics ROCK!!
Thanks for clearing up the myth as well.

I for one am also running on 8.5 multi. No changes in bandwith from 8 to 8.5 also

Nah, but wanna learn to speak English like an Irish fellow... for example like Felix from "The 51 State..."

A little update, GB K8NS Uultra-939.... more voltage (up to 1.7V) won't help, I think the board is to its MAX... need to find a Mobo, that will run @350FSB and more, cuz that now is only AIR.... the CPU is still waiting for the Vapochill LS ;)

Stay away to winnie 3200+ 0434, this code is really suck. I tried 2 of them and both cannot stable @ 2.4G vcore 1.6.

Yeah, the first cpu i had was a 0434 3000+ and it took 1.7v to get 2400mhz. I think thats the first week production, since i got my cpu when they were released. very poor clockers.

why are the boxed versions of the winny are cheaper?

0434 wasn't the first week of 3200+ because I got a 0433SPMW :P
Might be first of 3000+ but I doubt it.

i have an 3200+ 0437 and it will get into windows at 2.67 ghz but to get it stable for P95 i'm all the way down to 2.375 ghz and still testing stability :(

hey, what are the max temps you guys are reaching for winchesters?

i'm using 1.65v on air.... with an xp-90 and vantec stealth, EVEREST home edition says the cpu is at like 50 deg on full load. is that too high for winchesters? my old barton xp could take it up to almost 60 deg :P

i'm wondering if thats preventing a stable overclock, temps being too high? are winchesters more sensitive? should the max voltage only be like 1.5v or something?

i can't seem to anything stable above 2.3 ghz, and i know my memory can hold up to almost 280 mhz. its rather sad to have the cpu hold the system back.

Ey guys, I "just" joined the forum and am about to buy an A64 system (3500+ Winchester)

I have WC and want to ask what's about the max voltage/temp for these processors.....tried searching but nothing came up....something in the range of 1.7 Vcore?

Thanks... ;)

Its the luck of the draw to get hold of a CPU, RAM and MOBO that can OC well. I don't really trust the temps on the boards anymore. They are whacked!! Wonder how they even come up with the figures?!?

U kinda know that you've got a bad chip if u require alot of vcore to hit high overclocks. Most averagely 'good' OCable chips can hit 2.5Ghz to 2.6Ghz easy with 1.5vCore.

Why not try to sell it off and get the more 'tried and tested' batches of winchesters. Namely the 0433XPMW, 0440MPMW and 0441TPMW. 0433XPMW being the best so far but almost impossible to find now.

It would be criminal to let the rest of your GODLY componets go to waste just because of a bad CPU!! :p:

TodB:you sure the stepping of your 3000+ is correct?? I think u should get a 3500+ if u are gonna put it in a Vaporchill LS. The mobo is just gonna hold u back no matter how hard u push.

Hmm, the best i have seen so far are the 0433SPMWs! ;)

The 0433 are indeed the best of the lot in general .. damn ... wish I knew abt it earlier.. and DOUBLE DAMN!! Your 0433SPMW is GODLY!! :slobber:

Most ppl I've read abt that are on good air / water cooling are keeping it below 1.7v. As for temps... I'm not too sure. From my testing, my starts to get unstable when my heatsink is too hot to touch. I'd say that would be abt 60 degC. Anyway .. if u can't keep your chip below 55degC ... u are gonna get stability problems anyway. Just a guess on the temps... Anyone care to help??

Also ... another observation. Most ppl who put their chips under sub-zero cooling only required low voltges (1.5v - 1.6v) to hit the chips maximum OC potential. Correct me if I'm wrong pls .. :)
