I got a 8K5A2+ to replace a fubar'd 8K3A+ mobo. I also just got another 2400+ last week that I brieflly tested in my 8K5A3+ before I sold it to friend along with my other 2400+(original). that 8K5A3+ and 2400+ did 185x12.5=2322mhz rock solid at 1.95v aircooled. I tried the newer cpu in that combo and while it didn't go higher stable it did run at the 2322mhz apparently stable although not extensively tested.

Enter the 8K5A2+ got yesterday from newegg. Installed new OS(winXP with SP1 integrated)at 11.5x166 and all drivers etc... Tried stretching legs of new combo and fubar'd the HAL trying to run high fsb's. Was able to get 200x11.5=2300mhz to what I thought was stable but attempting higher fsb saw agp tearing. Tried to back it down to 12x195=2340 and it BSOD'd at desktop and next reboot gave corrupt hal DOH!!!!!

So another reformat/reinstall later, I have a combo that won't even do 2322mhz or 185x12.5 stable now at 1.9, 1.95, or 2.0v. I either get prime error or BSOD with page fault error(ram???). Now I have Corsair PC3200C2 that I ran all day long in my 8K5A3+ at aggressive timings at 185-190mhz fsb and that was with 2x512mb sticks. I am only running 1 512mb stick now in this system. Cooling is with Alpha 8045 and 48cfm fan. Temps not bad, they are in 40's idle and high 50's loaded(if I even get there). I even tried 12.5x180=2250mhz and started prime before bed and came back this AM to find monitor unresponsive so????? Now I am at work and wife tells me that thankfully 12.5x166=2075 is still running prime(well for about 1.5 hours now). I am obsessing about this as I am having a birthday party tonight(wife is throwing me 31st bday party) and want to have my 3 computers on a LAN +2 friends systems running UT2003 for peeps to play on. I spent about 4 hours rebuilding/installing 2 systems last night. And of course I have to have a problem child.

Will try diff bios when I get home but don't expect alot from that. Any other thoughts? Bad board? Bad cpu? ID 10 T error ?

hehe as always you sure you got good contact since it's a 8045 and that mounting system?

well I'll double check but I have installed about a dozen of these hsf's and never had a problem. But it's something I did plan to check when I got home. Temp seem fine though.

I assume you've already flashed to the very latest bios shown on Epox's site for your mobo?? Should be the first thing you did when you fired up the board... also, get the WPCRSET halt settings on there.... they're on the forums somewhere....

no I haven't flashed yet. I generally don't have a prob with epox shipping bios's. it's dated 8/15/02 btw.

well I feel stupid, it was the HSF not making proper contact.
Guess the thermister for the 8K5A2+ sux even more than I anticipated b/c temps were not that bad. But about 30% of the cpu was making only marginal contact. Meaning it didn't quiet seat all the AS3 so my cooling was sucking. Not sure how I did that with an Alpha 8045 as they are pretty much screw down in a pattern and forget. Guess I can always find new and interesting ways to screw things up. :)
running now at 185x12.5=2322mhz at 1.95v. So for now I am happy.
