pros
very stable vcore up to 1.90v read the tips to see how to get 1.9v
vdimm overvolts to 2.90v on highest setting
VTT tracks automatically, OCZ DDR-Booster works up to 4,0V (put it in ram slot 4)
runs great with ballistix
runs great with tccd memory
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1runs great with bh5 (needs bios 1.36b or newer)
2x Memory Interleaving?

cons
cpu socket position problematic for some cases
vdimm mod requieres trace cutting
SATA ports 1 and 2 are not locked, use slots 3 and 4 (closest to the cpu)
issues with ram slots 3&4 not working very well seems to work fine for some people
cpu temperature reading not working correctly seems to work fine for some people
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/images/icons/icon4.gif doesnt like ocz eb

TIPS
TIP: you have to disable cool n quiet when ocing
TIP: Cpu fan header must be connected, if not the pc could experience boot problems
TIP: if you have problems booting with BH5 try another stick of memory and set vdimm to the max and make sure you set the cas latency to 2.5 or 2.0 as bh5 wont boot with cas 3.0, then swap in the BH5
TIP: the CPU backplate is hard to get off on the MSI ... just heat it with a hair dryer, it will come off easily then
TIP: for best performance the MSI only needs Vdimm/3.3V bypass mod (or the OCZ booster).
Yet to try a chipset mod or HTT mod on the MSI ... it may help with LDT 4x @ > 260 HTT bus speeds
TIP: shut down core center after you used it to adjust or check your settings, if left running it might crash your system
TIP: if you have problems booting at low temps with a winchester try the latest beta bios
TIP: disable fast writes
TIP: only bios 1.36beta and 1.37beta allow up to 1.9v vcore
TIP: color coded ram slots are different than other 939 boards. Slots 1&2 are the ones nearer to the CPU and are dual channel
TIP: use HTT multiplier 4x up to ~260 and 3x up to ~290
TIP: use the + and - or PgUP and PgDn keys to change the htt speed, DO NOT HIT ENTER
TIP: check out the official msi 939 neo2 tips and tricks guide thread (http://xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43033)

TIP: In the bios press and hold Shift+F2 and then press ALT+F3 to unlock "hidden" features within the BIOS
TIP: If anyone has trouble getting low temp readings downlaod the latest MBM5 (use the K8N NEO Plat mobo selection, click settings, temps,CPU,and choose the first option for Winbond Diode 2)
TIP: if you experience problems with Antec Neopower and Truepower PSUs and also with PowerStream PSUs, try Bios 1.37 and turn the PSU off after you shut down, seems to help as well
TIP: Dissable Agressive Timings in Cell Menu if you're going to overclock
TIP: some people had close to no thermal compount on the nb, if your nb runs hot add some thermal compound (WARNING! might hurt your warranty)
here (http://xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=589637#post589637) is a guide that explains how to remove the nb heatsink
TIP: The MAch II needs a new firmware to operate with this board get it here (http://nventiv.blue-nexus.com/)
TIP: the vcore of winchesters seems to undervolt about 0.1V, max vcore for winchesters is 1.7V
TIP: bios collection: 1.10, 1.20, 1.23, 1.25, 1.30, 1.33, 1.34, 1.35, 1.36, 1.37, 1.41 (http://www.weckstrom.com/msibios)

TIP: newer boards, with S/N:K0411xxxxxx and S/N:K0410xxxxxx, seem to no longer have a bug with winchesters at low minus temps
TIP: get Codered's A64 tweaker (http://xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37345)
TIP: if you have BH-5 memory use the A64 tweaker and lower the timings as described here (http://xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=580942#post580942)
TIP: OC Guide for the msi k8n neo2 by XS GraveDiggA (http://people.freenet.de/funkflix/ocgk8n.txt)

TIP: corsair xl pro memory wont fit in the board with an xp-90 or xp-120 heatsink (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=601253#post601253)
TIP: the newer northbridges (0410/0411) seem to need less vdimm to reach the same overclock in 1:1! (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=605792#post605792)
TIP: If you are having trouble getting windows to boot from SATA ("Error Loading Operating System"), be sure to set SATA1/2/3/4 RAID to "ENABLED", even if you are not running RAID
TIP: older bios revisions need the agp speed set to 67mhz to lock it
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: disable aggressive chipset timings (performance mode) when ocing
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1 TIP: if you boot with trcd 2 vdimm seems to drop 0.1v, boot with trcd 3 and use corecell or codered's a64 tweaker to set it to 2 in windows
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1 TIP: bios 1.36b and 1.37 and modded variants seem to work best for bh5/bh6
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: to reach 1.9v vcore set 1.5 in bios + 3.3%, then get in windows use core center all the way up, and finally you use NF3 Clock-gen add 0.05v...it's about like 1.9v
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20351&stc=1TIP: turn off NV/ATI Speed Up in the hidden bios settingsas it ocs most cards gpu
TIP: It is about TRFC timing , when u run ram dividers other than 200 it changes TRFC from 14 to lower values and it limits memory overclocking. If u set it by a64 tweaker to 14 then memory overclocks as good as in 200 divider.

Nice to see you back charlie. What cpu did you pick up to run in the MSI?

The pic I have for the vcore mod, it's kind of hard to tell which leg of the chip it is on the one side. Charlie will you post some picks of the mods when you get them done. My board should be here Tues. Did you see the latest bios update gives HTT up to 450 I would be happy with a little 270-5 1/1 action.

I was talking to kingpin and if this board will do some good FSB we are going to team up and put it under his chilly1 cascade, between the two of us we have plenty of memory, 2 9800XT PE's along with a TAP warranty at CompUSA, and a proven 3gz FX53 and if that doesn’t go 3.3+ it has a warranty at Newegg too.

cowpuppy,
I'm getting a 3500+ 90nm this week to hold me over 'til fx55. I'll try to use the OCZ DDR booster thingie, and maybe some khx3000 bh5 or some tccd... MSI really has a lousy reputation, but this MAY be the board to bring them back to the table! Onepagebook has had some good #'s! I don't have a good pic of vcore mod, only the one from kyosen, right?
Sounds like you guys could definitely do some damage! Will be intresting to see :D
Hopefully everyone will see fit to drop k8n neo2 nuggets HERE as they're discovered!

Ya the vcore mod by kyosen. I can't tell on the left side which leg that wire is on, it kind of looks on the 2nd one down, maybe we could get hell-fire to mark up a pic for us.

Thats the same chip as on the gigabyte k8n 754 board. Should be 5th pin from top on right to ground.

You guys find hidden bios options in bios 1.2? they are in cell menu, and accessed by hitting shift + F2 then ALT + F3 not sure yet what they do ,but was curious to see what others have found.

I have been playing with the board for quite some time, and have kinda gotten to know its quirks.

First...this board did not like my BH-5 Mushkin or PC3700EB. The BH-5 would only allow me to do about 210HTT, and the EB would run out quick at 218HTT. I picked up a gig of Crucial Ballistix PC4000 and it's humming at 260 x 10 1:1 with 2.85v. Run the RAM in slots 1 & 2, 3 & 4 will give DC...but it will cause instability.

In order to get the AGP to work, you need to set the freq to 67. Only SATA ports 3 & 4 have working PCI locks.

Within Cell Menu, press Shift F2 & ALT F3 to unlock "hidden" features within the BIOS. It has a couple of neat things, namely a "overdrive" function that works on any ATi or Nvidia card.

I could not get the OCZ Booster to work properly in this board. It causes major instability, even though vTT was tracking right.

Pin 10 and pin 15.

I got tired of waiting for DFI, so I've decided to join the MSi Neo2 club and just ordered one to go with some new OCZ LE platinum 3700 ram they just put out. I'll do the vcore mod and use a booster on it I guess.

WOW! This is great.... all kinds of good stuff here! I'm just getting ready to order a CPU today.... but I don't have an EXTRA A64 processor to boot with to flash BIOS.... I thought I read somewhere that it WOULD boot with only 1 stick of ram in there! And BTW, only a week or less for FX-55 right?

I never heard of that but you may be right charlie. I didn't have to worry as I had a spare cpu.

Also, TCCD oc's less on more voltage. I think that is why the OCZ I had didn't do well. This G.Skill I have is doing better at 2.6v vs higher.

farthest one from cpu

huh? How's that possible? It wouldn't fit next to the slot next to it if you are running dual channel ram. Dual ch is either all green slots or all purple slots right?

edit: Oh, I looked at the manual and see that MSI uses both colors for dual, so 1st green and 1st purple for dual ch ddr400 and that leaves 2 open slots together so the booster fits in the last one and the board still operates in dual right?

Got the board yesterday, got CPU today got my ASUS X800 PRO vivo today. Hooked everything up and first boot was no go, I figured it was probably temp realated since I booted with GT. So I plugged in my rear fan into the CPU fan header and it booted. Used bottom two ram slots with my TCCD and installed windows.

Weird thing I was watching it instal windows and I look over and the chipset fan wasn't running, I flicked it with my index finger and it started running? Was like some haunted ride where you touch something and it screams at you.

Kind of annoyed at the board right now though, because of the screw placement I can't ever close the side panel of my PC75 now cause the tube sticks out. Bah so much for easier assembly :P

My board came with bios 1.2 stock, Gonna flash it to 1.35 once I'm done installing everything.

Someone mentioned something about "secret" options menu I was sitting in bios pressing CTRL + F2, CTRL + F3, ALT + F2, ALT + F3 and nothing happened so I just gave up.

Any how I'm going to look through this thread for a link for the MSI K8N NEO2 1.35 Beta Bios if its not posted can someone post a link for me please? Thanks!

Will post updates.

I have heard several cases of this. I think I'll replace mine with something better.

1.36 bios:

http://www.maksys.biz/comcentral/showthread.php?t=128

I think it is alt-f1

cowpuppy
10-08-2004, 01:59 PM
`schr0et It's shift-F2 then alt-F3 while holding shift+F2 place your curser on cell in the bios when you get it right it will move over to the left.

OCZ timmings were set at Auto CL3 -3-2-8-11-16

The only thing that bothers me about this board is the temps bios says from 40c to 113c and with my Temp display not working on my Promi all I have to go by is the temp probe from my Koolance attached to the backplate. MM also displays the same temps as reported from bios.

Some of my bios settings, I'm not sure wich version bios I'm using at this moment, it's the one I posted earlier from onepage.

Aggressive Timmings... Dis
NV/ATI..Enabled
Drive Dram Streangth... Normal
Dynamic OCing...Dis
HT Freq...3x
Coll-N-Quiet...Dis
PCI Auto Detect...Enabled
AGP Freq...67
Mem Volts 2.85...... booster to 3.1/OCZ.........3.3+/BH-5
AGP voltage 1.65
Vcore 1.8

Mem setup
200.....1T......Auto on all Timmings
mem is located in the 2 slots closest to cpu with booster in farthest slot=Dual chanel

All ports are off along with all the SATA Drives and On board sound
USB ports are on.

THe damn chipset fan is annoying me to no end! Everytime I shut down and restart the damn fan won't turn on!

Is there a fix for this?

I just downloaded the 1.36 bios I'm doing the floppy flash, post back in a second.

Is there anyway to get the MSI board bios to report atleast half decent temps?

Have not heard of chipset fan acting up like that. and as far as temps go Tis best to just ignore them. Unless that 1.36 fixes em.

sigh just restarted comp again and what'dya know stupid chipset fan didn't start. Maybe I should get a big stick to poke the chipset fan whenever I shut down and restart the PC

I just tried working 1.36 and it was no good for me, whenever I tried to change the HT it would show a blank box and wouldn't let me close it or exit bios I would have to CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart the comp.

I'm going to flash back to 1.35, and 1.36 doesn't fix temp issue still showing really off temps.

WOW I HATE this board! Everytime I try to go into the HT options it gives me a blank blue box and freezes bios, I tried this with 1.35 and 1.36 and both are giving me this.

Add to that it takes about 10 minutes for the stupid bios to get out of post mode, and then windows now takes another 10 mins to boot, I have to clear CMOS for it to boot normally.

I don't know what the heck I did here but this board has issues.

Holy hell, most half assed board I used. And to think I'm still using stock clocks and volts! Oh and look the stupid chipset fan stopped running out of the blue. I think some gasoline on this board would make it work better.

My 1st 3dMark run at over 3ghz  vcore 1.88. I still havn't tried any reall kind of vcore with this FX, it would be sweet to run 3ghz 24/7.
Some 3Dmark03 runs have tested that the OCZ is beating out my Bh-5, now if I could only get some OCZ EB that would do 300+ that would be sweet

/takes back some of the flames and goes to bios to try what you said.

Do you have a solution for the 10 minutes it takes for the board to get past post?

Guess I really needed to fully utilize the statement "The board is really picky but once you get it working it works great"

EDIT: Posting when angry = not smart. I'm going to keep going at it with this board and hopefully get it working. I still got hopes (notice I'm happy, I just got my ASUS X800 PRO VIVO to XT PE working 16 pipes after 10 tries :D)

EDIT TWO: Got it to stop taking its dear old timing posting and booting to windows, my secret is not being a jackass and changing everything in bios at once.

I'm leaning towards messing with AGP volts as reason for it slowing down like that.

In any case with 1.73V its not stable @ 235x11 wtf?

Ram settings:

2.5-3-3-8 1T Max clock 200 mhz
2x512 OCZ TCCD @ 2.65V

CPU V; 1.55 + 10% = 1.705V

Side band addressing = disabled
AGP Aperature = 256MB
Set PCI Clock = enabled
AGP clock = 67

What should I be messing with here? Thanks

well, i think as dudes said, 3xhtt for this board and any kinda overclocking.

WHich is crap tbh, all other 939 boards have chipset/htt voltage options, and all seem to go way way further than this one in overall htt speed. Try that first.

I'm still playing around with it, still gotta try the 3x htt and see how far i can get, cpu cooling could be it, plain volcano 12 on it right now, or venus 12, forget what its called, TT heatsink. 3600+ is mighty fast though, very weird chip, very early week for an ath 64, CG stepping though, and on crap cooling in a very hot room is doing at least 2.5Ghz without much extra voltage.

Been getting to drunk and feel to bad day after to mess around with it, freshers week ++

I got this board the week they came out and I hated the freakin thing. Unstable and generally a huge pain in the ass when trying to overclock, especially compared to my Asus A8V which is stable and cooperative.

Now, I didn't have the luxury of having all the many tips that I'm reading about now around the net. It seems through Bios updates and people learning how to tame the board, it seems a little more attractive, although I'm in no hurry to mess with it again. It's sitting in half built box and there's no way I'm putting it back in my main gaming rig. Yes, it pissed me off that bad. It's probably going to serve in as my HTPC, as at stock speeds it was o.k.

Better luck to all of you sincerely, but I almost shot mine with a 12 Gauge. Don't even get me started on the Clear Cmos jumper, which I needed to access often because of how flakey the board was when tweaking ram settings.

I'm really not a negative person, but I think all of us have had hardware that made us want to pull our hair out. The Neo2 was mine.

Good thing you didn't read my post before I edited it, I think I was more pissed off last night than anyone could imagine, I was getting close to ripping the board out of the case and lighting it on fire lol.

But I could it working half decent now, can boot in and run SiSoft in windows @ 260x11 2.5-3-3-7 1T but not stable enough to even run Super Pi 1M

It causes major instability, even though vTT was tracking right.

two things you might take as a reference:

1. Booster need to be sit in 4th slot
2. All the 939 boards( should not say boards)I think I should say 939 CPU
do not like BH-5 chip
(my MSI doesn't do any mod, cuz I don't know how to mod it!)
I will post some pics later :D

I'll say one thing K8N NEO2 is not the board for people who want immediate OCability. This board needs A LOT of tweaking.

I'm only cooling with a MachI now, but as soon as my new MachII comes in I hope to get my 3500+ up over 2900mhz for 24/7 gameing goodness.

With this mem and cpu I'm peged @260x11 1:1 for 24/7 usage, and it's held up just fine for about a month.

My 260x11 @ 1.84 can only run prime for 2 mins before it fails and this is with the memory running fine.

Just set mine up. Bios 1.36 gives up to +18.3% vcore which gives me around 1.92v reading if needed, and vdim with an overvolted 3.3 line gives around 2.9v so this seems the highest voltages available on a non-modded 939 board. Actually, the transition to the Neo2 was one of the most trouble free simplest installs I have ever done. So far fairly impressed with it.

I have a couple of questions.

At present I have the MSI 754 board and am thinking of going to the 939 board soon.

1) The OCZBooster seems to work fine on the 939 board but how does it fit in if it is right next to one of the DIMM's ? On my 754 there are 3 slots and the middle slots splits them up so it fits in. On the 939 are both green DIMM slots dual channel, or one purple and one green ?

Has anyone tried the VIA 939 MSI Neo with the KT8000 Pro chipset rather than the nforce3 250 ? Via normally are quicker than nvidia with K8, but is the AGP/PCI locked and does VTT track VDIMM ?

Andy

Run slots 1 & 2, green/purple closest to socket for dual channel, and run your slot 4, farthest from socket

You want to use the 2 ram slots closet to CPU to get stable dual channel, use slot 4 (farthest from CPU) for booster like above person said.

For raid use the 2 raid connectors closet to CPU if you want locked SATA, the 2 sata farther from CPU is not locked.

When you're in the bios press shift+f2 then alt+f3. In the cell menu disable ATI/Nvidia speedup. When it's enabled it allows the motherboard to overclock the videocard in 3d. This will really goof up the speeds you *think* the card is running.

I have seen this happen: in win2k I have ATI tool open, and opening 3dmark01 increases card clock by 20MHz on core and ram. this doesn't happen when Nvidia/ ati speedup is disabled in bios.
My question is are clockspeed jumps the same for Nvidia users, or other ATI users? And if so what determines how much of a speed boost.

There's a lot of permuations but it is time well spent for a few hundred extra points (I have not got around to it either though :) ) Nice proggy.

Although TCCD is getting all the hype  the Crucial is pretty reliable on the nvidia 250 motherboard. These were sticks sent in the post 2 months apart so deinitely no cherry picking ;)

On the DFI, it becomes available when you activate the on-board LAN function. Then when you install the nForce drivers it will ask you if you want to activate the firewall and give you an HTML interface on your desktop allowing you to configure the settings. I'm sure the MSI is the same ?

The Runner

I don't know, I don't think I've activated the lan, yeah I installed the realtek drivers for it, but I guess you mean setting up a new network using windows?

I never installed the nvidia ide sw when I installed the nforce drivers, but I installed the rest.

My board is meant to have it, my drivers don't seem to have initialised it.

I dont need the d-bracket for this do I? Cause I never recieved one as I bought my msi board OEM. ;(

Enable the Nvidia MAC in the bios , when you get into windows look for the Nvidia folder (default normally c:\Nvidia) navigate to this folder \nForceWin2KXP\5.10\Ethernet\NAM and run setup.
That will install NAM (network access manager) which will allow you to enable/edit the firewall.

sorry to sound noob, but where abouts in the bios will the nvidia MAC be?

btw this could be a good reason why I dont have it activated. I go C:\Nvidia and only find my gcard drivers and no mobo ones, even though I used the supplied CD. (Perhaps a lesson is to never use the CD :))

Any sort of nforce driver remover so I can use the 5.10?

Nvidia MAC option is in intagrated peripherals under PCI devices? i think.
You should be able to just install the new 5.10's over the old ones without issue, atleast i never had a prob doing it before.

Neo2 Platinum can be used with winchesters. You'll need to flash bios pronto to versions newer than 1.1 (1.3 works very well for me) after you'll be able to boot.
If your MB comes with bios v1.1, initially there is an issue with dual channel memory support. My system didn't want to post with 2 memory sticks installed. One can avoid this problem by using initially just one stick. After bios flash you can add your second memory stick.
Bios versions 1.2 and later, support winchesters fully AFAIK. Perhaps boards which are now in retail channel have latest bios version. Who kows, you can get lucky .

Seen a few users on that forum do the same.
Such as here (http://msihq.designlab.info/thread.php?threadid=64335&hilight=90nm)..

I didn 't know about the issues with the Winchester chip and the Mobo when I re-built my system. I sure found out quick. The first thing that I found out was that it didn't like my dual channel mem. I could only get the board to boot with my two sticks if I just loaded the green slots.

There seems workrounds for all socket 939 boards and winchesters except the ABIT. The ABIT needs a BIOS update to boot.
Also not sure on Gigabyte. (or haven't read it yet)
I can't guarantee what BIOS your mobo will ship with tho.

Much the same as you temp wise.

I ignored that ages ago.

I read over on OCUK (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17274130&perpage=30&pagenumber=10), where someone put a diode under his water block on the chip, and that read approx 10 degrees lower than the 40 odd he had.

I get idel temps of 38C according to BIOS.well today my temp probes arrived.ive got one under the socket and one between the maze4 and cpu and both are reading 28-29C idle so that near enough 10C less than BIOS.

My temps are 39 now, guess the as5 is coming into play knocking off a whole 4C! Still I bet they're higher than they *really* are.

what sort of temps people getting here? I'm getting 37 - 43C in windows, not really doing anything atm using 3000winchester @ stock. And a XP-90 cooler w/ 92mm fan. 5000rpm one (stock zalman w/ the zalman bracket fan, put on top)

I find the temps a bit high, im using 1.36beta bios.

The cooler itself however is particually cool, I even stopped the fan and felt the cooler for a minute. Odd.

Try MBM using the K8N NEO profile. They seem more accurate there.

False Start For Me As Well !!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,

I've just bought and tried 3 different Antec Neopower power supplies on my MSI Neo2 Platinum motherboard (AMD Nforce3, socket 939) and I still experience the same problem :

Everytime I switch on my computer I hear the fans working, the disks starting but the power led remains off and if I do nothing the screen remains black. I have to hit the power button one more time in order to startup my computer. I do not have this problem when I restart the computer from windows. Moreover I could see that when I unplug the power connectors of my 2 raptors I do not have the problem, the system is starting the first time I switch it on (I tried different cables of course). I also removed the power supply from the case but it's still the same.

Precision : I NEVER had this kind of problem with my former Tagan 480W.

As I already tried with 3 different Neopower power supplies I now ask you for help. Please try to answer me as soon as possible.

So try it with the min amout of stuff connected, and if it fixes the problem it may well be ya PSU.

You can use Codered's A64 Tweaker to set 200 ram divider for 1:1 in windows but if those are double sided modules they prolly won't do much better than 200-205 1:1.

I've got the 754 board but have similar power issues

1) Machine boots up just flicking the power switch on the wall without the proper switch from the motherboard

2) False start 1 as mentioned in the thread... machine spins up the fans for 1 or 2 seconds and then dies

3) False start 2 as mentioned in the thread .. machine spins up fans but no screen image.

I had an MSI board as a replacement, my first one worked fine. The replacement did the above. I sent it back and got another, the replacement did the same. I left it in disgust and a few days later gave it one last time and it worked fine. It now works fine all the time as well, but i have had some troubles before this last good spell.

Having read the thread I notice a lot of GF 6800 cards being used. Interestingly, looking back at it, when my replacement board arrived I was using the 6800, but when I gave up with it I put the 6800 in my P4 and used it there. When it booted up after a few days it probably had my Fx 5800 in there. Now i have tested it since with the 6800 but I have had some troubles, at present the FX 5800 is in there and it seems OK

To be honest I cannot quite definitely match up when the 6800 was in there and when it was not and when it had these strange boot problems.

The only thing I can do is try 10 boots tonight with FX 5800 and then 10 with the 6800 and see if stability goes.

Can someone else with the problem and different video cards do likewise ? This will show if this theory is a false start ( cough, pardon the pun :) )

hi @ all!

i have got the k8n neo2 platinum last friday. and i did a lot of overclocking. but i have some problems:

system:

AMD FX 53
K8N Neo2 Platinum Bios: 1.36 beta
2x512 MB OCZ 4200 EL (G.SKILL is on the way)
ATI X800XT
OCZ Powerstream 520
Asetek LightSpeed 240W

i had read this thread again and again. so i did my bios-tweaks.

ht 3x
spreadspektrum disabled
dynamic overclocking disabled
agressiv timings disabled
sata 1+2 disabled
ect.

so i started. comming to 255x11 everythings works fine. 2 hours prime were not a problem. comming to 260x11 prime goes only 10 to 15 minutes. ok, no problem... lets start superpi, no problem. ok, test: 265x11 superpi: not exant in round. at this time my vcore was 1,7v. ok, lets give him more power. 1,75v and nothing works fine. ok, more power! 1,8v nope... 1,85v nope :(

ok, i thought. vdimm!!!! i still was at 2,70v. vcore down to 1,7v vdimm up to 2,75 nothing went. vcore up, nothing.

then i tested a lot of things. big multi, low htt. high htt, low multi and so on. my result is, that my system wont go over the 2,9ghz. it doesnt matter, which vcore i take or which vdimm. i testet every constelation.

on my abit av8 i was able to run 245x12 24/7. for benchmarking i got 247x12 all @ 1,85v vcore and 2,65v vdimm.

can someone help me?

So guy´s...how is this board behaving with BH5 sticks?
So huge thread that I can´t remember it all :)
2x512 Mb Corsair XMS 3500C2.
Please post experiences with this board and BH5 sticks.

I'm using 2 x 256MB DS XMS3500 DC that has been tested at 250 @ 3.4v/1.7Vtt on my IC7-G....

My CPU limitations have forced me to just using 230Mhz @ 2-2-2-6-11-16-1T @ 3.2v. My Ram can do more but my CPU is crapping out at 230 x 11 @ 4x HTT.

It's a tight fit with the DDR Booster on Dimm4 & mt ram due to the HS on my ram.

Gonna try my 2 x 512MB XMS3500 that's done 240Mhz DC on the IC7-G & will post my findings when I'm done doing the usual Memtest86/Prime95.

Only problem is that one of my front USB ports ain't working...

So far, using the specs in my 2nd rig, idle temps at 2.53GHz (11 x 230 @ 1.7v [1.55vid + 8.3% boost]) is 35c idle & 53c under Prime95. Tested for 21 hours as well as 5 hours of Memtest86+....

I'll be back with more findings with my 2 x 512MB XMS3500...

Maybe I gotta change the multi to 10.5 & try 250Mhz 1:1 action...

Cheers,
Minnyboy

I hate to have to tell people this but don't expect them to do more than 200/400ddr. This is from my personal expirence with double sided BH-5 on mine but many other people have had the same problem with them.

Thanks for the information!
What is the best RAM for this board?

Caper,

So far, just Memtest86+ & the new OCZ MemTest, I've been able to run my 2 x 512MB sticks at 2-2-2-6-1T @ 11 x 230 (2.53Ghz). I ran that test for 1 & 1/2 hours w/out any problems.

Trying 10.5 x 242 (2.54GHz) 1:1 @ 3.3v (DDR Booster) w/out any problems so far. Gonna let the test run overnight & then do a Prime95 run while I'm at work tomorrow.

Got the CoolerMaster Hyper6 with 2 fans (1 blowing, 1 sucking) as I need 1.7v for my CPU to be stable....

One thing that's got me going is that CPU-Z reports my 3500 as a 130nm whereas Memtest (both the original & OCZ;s one) reports it as a 90nm part????

Any ideas?? My thinking is that it's a minor bug with Memtest although I'm hoping it's a CPU-Z bug & I've got a 90nm CPU...

Will update during the next few days to see how high my BH5 will go with these AMD64 S939's...

Looking Good so far... Gotta test 10 x 250 1:1 to see how my 512Mb sticks go... Took 3.4v on an Intel system to do 240MHz... Taken 3.3v to do 242MHz on AMD64 POWER!!!

Keep you updated... :toast:

Regards

Andy

Sounds like the extra power load the 6800's are pulling may be a strain on the PS. I have a 6800U and a PCPC510 with no issues. maybe lower rated or even non tweaked rail PS's could be a factor.

If I remember correctly...you have to use latest CPU-Z to identify 90nm.

Use bios 1.36. You will not need the booster with samsung tccd chips. They are on OCZ 3200EL Platinum and 3700EL Platinum. They are on less expensive Gskill ram (do a search on this forum). I am sure some others too, but I have the 3700ELplats and others with the Gskill 4400 are doing even over 300htt at 2.8v and lower.

Got a few questions here that I need some info on....

What's the max volts for aircooling??
I'm @ 1.8v ATM (1.55v + 10%), it should be 1.705v but the vcore fluctuates by .03v to .12v, is this usual for this board??

I'm using the Hyper6 + 2 fans... 35-38c idle & 55c under load...Using MBM 5.3.7.1...

Caper ,
I haven't tried any more than 242MHz on my BH5's so far...OCZ MemTest86 v1.0 reports 2980MB/s @ 2-2-2-6-7-16-1T @ 3.2v (DDR Booster)...

It was only stable for 3.5 hours Prime95 @ 10.5 x 242 @ 1.7v (darn thing fluctuates badly)....

Gonna try lowering the HTT to 241 & see if it's Prim95 stable. Gonna at least let it run for 5-10 hours first & lower the multi to see what my 2 x 512MB BH5's are capable of...

Off topic:
Funny thing is: I got these 2 x 512MB modules by luck... I was at my local store a while back & some idiot came in & returned these sticks because they "wouldn't" run at 2-3-3-7 on their mobo/cpu combo... Back at a time when it was so god damn hard to get 512MB BH5's in AUS... Nowwhere had them... Right time & place :D.

ALSO if i want to run BH-5 in this MSI board? how does the OCZ booster run with this mb? thx perc,

It's a tight squeeze with my XMS3500 in slots 1&2 & the Booster in slot 4 but it works real well here... In my case anyways... Both 256MB & 512MB modules....

On the contrary , my NB fan is too lould , seems there is a helicopter in my case

K8N Neo2 with 1.36b-bios
using DIMM#1 and #2 (the nearest to the CPU-Socket) - so running DC
bios-config 1 (http://www.8ung.at/dresign/rechner/bios0001.jpg)
bios-config 2 (http://www.8ung.at/dresign/rechner/bios0002.jpg)

anyone a idea? :(

btw it doesn't matter, if i set VDIMM to 2,6V or 2,85V or something between.....with 2,75V i get the most less errors....

i just test with test#5 @ memtest....

Simple math. stock fx-53: 2400MHz (200*12)

Change multiplier to 9.5-> Click apply FID

http://www.sudhian.com/showdocs.cfm?aid=616

This is still ongoing but I tested this last night and disagree with the findings.

Note that this article shows the integer multiples for memory divider in the first few graphcs with sandra but then goes on to Everest and other software showing that when a half multipler is selected in clockgen or similar what actually happens is that the motherboard selects the next whole multipler down and bumps up the FSB speed.

Hence 12.5x200 would actually be 12x208. If you run MSI own Core Cell it also reports this so you can try this at home if you wish.

However I did some tests with Samdra and pifast last night and setting to 12.5x200 did a pifast time 1 second less than when I subsequently run it at the proper 208x12. Hence my conclusion that some software is reporting the speeds wrong.

Hi guys (and ladies...) I'm brand new to this site. Very nce. Quick question before I hit the control panel and customize stuff: Decided on the Neo 2 as my next upgrade some time ago along with the 3500+. Since reading through here last night have decided to try to find the Winchester CPU. At present NewEgg only carries the 3000+ and 3200+. With mem, have been reading how PC3200 XBL Patriots are good chips as they can be overclocked more. Brings me to my question: Why not just go with these? edit: Oh, and do the Winchesters come in retail versions? I'd like a 3 year warratny. :)

Any hints to get PCI/AGP lock to work on this board?

Have tried following tricks, without any success:

Set AGP to 67MHz - 72MHz
Boot with 201FSB - 210FSB
1t -> 2t
Disabled Spread Spectrum
Moved the hd to SATA ports 3 & 4 (disabled 1 & 2 in bios)
Tried multiple bioses (1.20 - 1.37)...

And still cant pass 250FSB, even when running with lower dividers or after enabling 2t timing :(

I´ve tested Mushkin BLVL2 PC3500 256MB (DS) sticks and HyperX 3200 256MB (SS) sticks, and both sets have been driven over 270FSB 2-2-2-5-7-11-1T on Gigabyte K8NSNXP-939 and with many other platforms.

I have even tried to use old GF2 card because it can run with higher AGP frequenzy. So maybe the WD 200GB SATA HD craps out?

And still cant pass 250FSB, even when running with lower dividers or after enabling 2t timing :(

I´ve tested Mushkin BLVL2 PC3500 256MB (DS) sticks and HyperX 3200 256MB (SS) sticks, and both sets have been driven over 270FSB 2-2-2-5-7-11-1T on Gigabyte K8NSNXP-939 and with many other platforms.

I have even tried to use old GF2 card because it can run with higher AGP frequenzy. So maybe the WD 200GB SATA HD craps out?

Having the same problems, I'm using tccd with it so i can tell you its not BH's fault. Anything over 250 and i get errors. :(

I am doing 265x9 OK for Sandra and pifast, though I seem to be having issues with dragothic at present which I think is the video card but at an outside bet it could be memory related.

I use Crucial Ballistix at about 3.1v. In my 754 board one stick would do 280 the other 275 or so.

Any hints to get PCI/AGP lock to work on this board?

Have tried following tricks, without any success:

Set AGP to 67MHz - 72MHz
Boot with 201FSB - 210FSB
1t -> 2t
Disabled Spread Spectrum
Moved the hd to SATA ports 3 & 4 (disabled 1 & 2 in bios)
Tried multiple bioses (1.20 - 1.37)...

And still cant pass 250FSB, even when running with lower dividers or after enabling 2t timing :(

tried PATA drive or 32bit/66mhz controller ?

Ahh, problem solved :D

Trfc SHOULD NOT be touched by A64 Tweaker. Otherwise your memory simply wont work like they should. I think its a bios bug, since the value wont change at all even if you ajust it with A64Twkr.

This board really rocks. Just ran SuperPI at 278MHz 2-2-2-5-7-1t / 3.58V with my old faithful KHX3200 sticks, and they are single sided btw. With GB K8NSNXP-939 they couldn´t run even at 200FSB if 2t was disabled.

hmmm Trfc via A64Tweaker + 2xKHX3200/256 + Neo2 + 1.36 BIOS + FX53 works for me

EDIT: the BIOS doesnt affet what A64 Tweaker reads for Trfc. It reads directly from the memory controller registers

I'm having the same issue with ram. I basically have 4 sticks of bh-5 on hand. 2 corsair, dbl sided, 3200LLPT v1.1 and 2 kingston hyperx 3200, single side, and i can't break 230 without crashing out of windows upon boot. I've max'd out my ram volts on the board and i am using 1.30 final version of the bios. Should i flash to 1.3b6? I've tried everything i can think of as far as the ram settings go from leaving them to auto to manually setting them and still the same issue. I have a 3200+ 90nm winchester and i can do 2.6 into windows on air and 2.8 boot so i know it's not the chip that's holding me back at this point. I was going to do the vdimm mod to get me 3.3v for the ram and see if that would help but i'm not sure that would even benefit me at all. I don't have a booster so is there anyway i can get more than 3.3v to the ram with a mod? Also, where is everyone getting the 1.3b6 bios i can't find it anywhere atm. Let me know if i should be doing something else cause i'm at a loss right now :( Thanks in advance.

Edit:
This is my very fist A64 board as i've been intel for a while and haven't upgraded in ages. I'm a little confused about the cpu vid setting and what exactly htt is. Can someone explain that or have a link to an article i can read up on it.

Need DDR Booster or Vdimm mod mate... There should a a thread for the Vdimm mod somewhere here. I use the DDR Booster, saves a lot of trouble.

Here's the link for ppl who don't wanna search the first page of this thread.

K8N Neo2 1.36b Bios (http://www.maksys.biz/comcentral/showthread.php?t=128).

Gotta get rid of my 130nm 3500+ & get meself a 3200+ 90nm... CPU isn't stable past 11x230. Lowering multi to 10.5x242 ain't stable either even though is ends up being the speed... Lowering HTT don't help either...

Best I could get my 2x512MB XMS3500 was 242MHz@2-2-2-6-7-16-1T... That's running OCZ memtest86 for over 11 hours...I'm not even going to bother with 2T...

Cheers,
Minnyboy

edit: CPU VID is Vcore under a different name...

As for HTT: I ripped this straight from sierra_bound...

Since many people are switching to A64 for the first time, I thought I'd provide a little primer. I posted some of this information in the Asus A8V thread, and thought I'd give a little broader explanation here.

Technically speaking, there is no FSB on A64 systems. FSB is a bus that allows the CPU to communicate with system memory. A64 systems use a different type of connection called HyperTransport. It's a point-to-point link. The term HTT is used to described the connection speed. This is roughly equivalent to FSB but not the same thing.

The general formula for determining optimal HyperTransport speed is HTT (FSB) X HT multiplier. The multipliers are sometimes listed in the BIOS as frequencies that are multiples of 200MHz. 1000MHz = 5x, 800MHz = 4X, etc.

The HyperTransport speed should not exceed the motherboard's specs. The Asus A8V, for example, has a maximum HyperTransport speed of 1000MHz. So using the formula, if you have HTT at 250, the HT multiplier should be set no higher than 800MHz (4X). 250 X 4 = 1000.

More information about HyperTransport can be found here (http://www.hypertransport.org/faqs.html#b) and here (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/DevelopWithAMD/0,,30_2252_2353,00.html)

Can someone tell me where to measure VTT on the board ? For the 754 it was above the memory slots but on the 939 there is just one measuring point for VDIMM between the slots and the edge of the board ( the black/white circle obviously ! )

I keep dropping out to desktop in dragothic and wonder if this is because on my board VTT does not track VDIMM at 1/2 ratio for some reason.

The ratio is in the Cell Menu>DRAM Configuration>Max Memclock
The ratios are 100, 133, 166, and 200

As for your second question, the manual says that "The orange PCI slot (PCI5) also works as a communication slot, which allows you to insert the communication card". Whatever that is! LOL

I'm so pissed off right now. I can't even do 12x217fsb with 4xhtt which is 2.6ghz ,stock fx55 speeds and my htt is below 1000. My ram is even rated at 217fsb and passes memtest everytime so i know its not the ram. I'm starting to believe this mobo doesn't have working PCI when comes to SATA drives. I do have an ide hd in my closet so ill give it a try tomorrow.

Which SATA port are you using? Use SATA port 3 and 4 only because 1 and 2 can't be locked.

Im using 3/4 closest to the cpu. In bios i have everything disabled for 1/2 ports and everything enabled for 3/4. This sucks, i had better success with ABit nf7-s which did 220fsb 1:1. Why aren't the 1/2 ports locked anyway?? WTF ? why do all chipmakes advertise that their boards have pci/agp locks but when they come out they dont. I dunno, im pretty sure it has to do with sata, ill try my ide tomorrow.

OK, I found the Neo 2, the 3500+ Winchester, now all I need is the RAM. What's the best way to go? Patriot PC3200 XBLK or PC4200 ELK? The ELK timings are 3-4-4-8 at 2.6 VDimm. I got nothing against OCing the 3200 to 260+ MHZ, but if I'm gonna be running the same timings as the 4200 at a 3.0 VDimm, why bother?

Ok, i've got my system all setup now, and something just doesn't seem right with it, so any help would be nice. Keep in mind, this is my first AMD build, so not only am i a noob, but i'm working with something i know very little about.

Hardware:
FX-55 (using stock FX-53 heatsink, waiting on XP-90)
MSI Neo2 1.36Beta
2x512 Gskill TCCD
6800 GT OC by BFG
Antec True Power 550
WD 74GB Raptor
Onboard Sound and LAN (non MAC one?)

My main BIOS settings are AGP 1.65v with 128mb aperture. RAM volts are default, CPU voltage is default with "vid" default as well, no % increase or whatever that is, something i still don't understand to begin with. ATI/Nvidia in special menu is disabled, RAID disabled, SATA 1-2 disabled, MAC LAN Disabled, HTT is at 3x, FSB is at 260, multi is at 10, AGP is at 67, spread spectrum disabled..i think that's most of it, at least all i can think of without rebooting right now. My memory timings are 2.5-3-3-7-1T. I haven't attempted to overclock, A) I don't have a clue what i'm doing, and B) i am waiting to burn in and get my new heatsink.

Now here's my problem. My 6800 GT OC card has a default clock of 370/1.0. I had been running it in my Intel rig at 420/1.10 for about a weeks time, no problems at all. If i even overclock it by 1MHz on this new AMD, i get artifacting like crazy, and benchmarks take on this crazy look. Aquamark will freeze, and have weird lags in it, plus weird artifacts i can't even describe. 3DMark 03 will have weird artifacting as well i can't describe, and even if the bench runs all the way through, it still is about 10K points less in aqua, and 3K less in Mark 03, now if someone can explain this to me, you get a cookie. Bassically i can't overclock this graphics card at all anymore, and my Intel rig spanks it in benches because of this.

Another thing i dislike about this board is the fact that everytime i reboot, i get the Nvidia IDE RAID pop up screen that sits on "detecting array..." for about 3-5 seconds, even though i have RAID disabled within my BIOS, not a big problem, but VERY annoying never-the-less, little help on getting rid of that would be cool too. Overall it's a nice CPU, it does beat out my intel at default clocks in CPU dependent benches, but as for this motherboard, i am not a fan so far, keeping in mind this is my first ever AMD and have nothing to comapare it to..lol

If you can suggest anything about my weird gfx problem that would be cool. Thanks.

I don't think that's it though, cause everything is works great on the settings i have posted above, it's when i throw in gfx overclocking that the thing really drags. I will try that though, thanks for the input.

And i was hoping to really like this setup, but so far i miss my intel just for the fact that i know what i'm doing on the Intel platform, it's far better in multitasking, and i can overclock the graphics which is the most important part to me, being that i am a gamer. We'll see how it is once i get some better cooling, and overclock the CPU some. I just haven't been impressed with it yet, and that RAID popup screen is driving me nuts.....lol

I'm starting to wonder if your videocard is too hot and thermal throttling is kicking in. I haven't had a card that had that kind of thermal control but it sure sounds like that's what's happening.
Pop the side panel off and blow a fan in there is you think it may be an issue.
