hey, has anybody ever used di to chill a water/antifreeze mix of his watercooling? this makes it a lot easier to use di for people who have a watercooling setup, insulating is a pita, but i still prefer it over building a container :D

Yeah I did try it when I was using dry ice on my CPU and had my GPU pelt + waterchilled. The coolant didnt freeze since it was a high ethanol mixture and there bubbling was insane. You'll have to wait for the bubling to stop then you have really cold water, provided your anti-freeze mixture is potent enough.

did you put the dry ice straight into the coolant in the reservoir?
did you crush it?
do you remmeber how much antifreeze you used?
how much did you use and how long did it last?

oh, and of course, what temps did you get?

thx :D

I used small pieces, dropped right into reservoir. I don't really use "anti-freeze" but ethanol + water. I think its like 70% ethanol 30% water, so much that my room constantly reeked of a drunkard's den.
I did not use much, just ~ 12 small pieces, set aside from the CPU container for testing. Didn't know how cold it got with the crappy thermal probe I used, but if I had enough in there, I'm quite sure it would drop at least 10C more. Just gotta quickly use the cold liquid before the temp equalize.

I once tryed dropping a couple pellets of DI in to a glass of water to see if it would freeze. Much to my suprise it didn't freeze so I went back and monitored the temp of the water and I found the DI wasn't making the water any colder...

It's probably because the dry ice cannot evaporate well when its in the water.. a better idea would be to put the dry ice or liquid nitrogen in some kind of container touching the water, but then you're right back to "why dont you just put it on the cpu in the first place argument".

Its still a bit easier though, as you could just drop a coke can with the lid chopped off into your res. The coke can would have the DI in it, and an alchohol of your choice. Dunno really how well that'd do, but it'd be worth a try.

i think it worked well for shamino because he used alcohol :)

LOL then dont tell me to use antifreeze in my water, tell me to use water in my antifreeze mix! :D hahahaha

imagine your benching with that alcohol water mix and smoke and some glow falls into the water :D :flame:

Is that only water surepu? If so it isn't doing anything for your water temps.

Damn surepu can you even find your MB with all that mist...lol...what kind of water temps you get with all that dry ice?

if its pure water the temps would actually not be very low at all...

you need alcohol or something else.

This sure a intresting idea. What happends if you cant get hold of ethanol, what stuff can you use then?

what about sitting the DI in a container and putting it either on top of the rad or submerging the rad in it?

i'm curious because i have some WC'ing coming and the place to buy dry ice is less than 2 miles away :)

Yarr! Use some from yer own still... Otherwise use pure ethanol mixed with water, it roxx for this purpose.

It is my mini test for reaction of water with dry ice!!
