The infamous pink paste found under just about every Socket-478 (and now 915) North Bridge HSF's usually takes me about an hour to remove pro-perly. First scraping it, second cleaning it with highly toxic chemicals, and third lapping it. Then there's the North Bridge itself which can be damaged quite easily if lapped. In truth, there's so little material one can remove safely, lapping the NB simply isn't worth the effort. Check out my front page (http://www.ksbrainstorms.com) for a step by step photo-review.
