Ok I'm a noob in this area. I've done low temp stuff before but now with an AC unit. I hear I need to take out the thermostat, saw a fan off and other such things. A few pointers please. Thanks

Here are the pics: http://home.comcast.net/~big_baller868/ac1.jpg

Now where is the themostat that I need to remove? Is it that copper tube in front of the radator? How should I remove it? Just take the wiring off of it and yank it out of there? Any wirers I need to reattach somewhere?

Cut what? Just take out the whole fan? What about the mouse wheel, does that stay? Also what is my compressor? HP? What type of refridgerator stuff does it use? Sorry, I'm not hvac cert or anything. But always willing to learn.

The thermostat is that copper probe mounted on the front at the bottom. It will go to one of the switches and is responsible for cycling the compressor/fans according to the temperature.

The mousewheel fan comes off. With it running, it is pulling warm air through the evaporator to cool it. It will get MUCH colder without that fan.

To stop the thermostat there are 2 things to do 1. Move it to the condensor coil/ the radiator that gets hot or 2. find the 2 wires it attaches to then snip those and short them together. Also make sure you remove the wheel fan the the front

lol whats that guide to computer forensics in the corner?

I would cut off all the wires to the compressor excep the ground/netral/live and wire those to a 3 prong plug.

Hehe yeah I'm tracking everyone here!!! No I just took it at the community college last quarter...I have to sell that book back. Awsome class, the guy who teaches helped write the book.

Remove the squirrel cage (official slang name for it) blower wheel, and cut the shaft off close to the motor.

The thermostat is the temperature control, whose sensor is the tube at the front of the evap. There will be two or more wires attached to the back of the control. Connect them together so that the A/C will run continuously, achieving its lowest temperature.

Ok I took out the squirrle fan and the foam boxing stuff. I disconnected the thermostat.

Here is the state of things. Just want to make sure I know what to do next.

As we can see the two blue and pink wires that were attached to the thermostate are right there. but do I want to take that box1 off? The pink wire goes to it. Should I leave box1 there? The two power wires are also shown. What about that big capacitor dingy? And the green ground wires. They were attached at various places. One is still attached to the metal box under everything. I hope this picture helps. If you want a different angle just ask, I borrowed my friends digital camera. Thanks a bunch guys.

See where the pink wire attaches to box 1? Unplug the pink wire and plug the blue wire in there. That would be the same thing as connecting the blue and pink wires together.

Ok I just plugged the baby in. I did what you said and plugged the blue in the pink. Its running right now. I'll post a pic here when it gets frosty. Is there anything that I shouldn't touch? Like that big capacitor thingy? Anything that could hurt me while its running? This isn't like playing with a power supply but I'd like to know if theres anything I should avoid. Thx

::edit:: Ok things are looking pretty cold.I don't have anyway of telling the temp right now because my compunurse broke.

Looking good. I just purchased a very similar unit the other day from Sears and already tore it apart and bypassed the thermostat just as you have.

I'm in a little of a bind of what to put it in- I bought one of those 12 pack coolers but I'm not too sure about bending the tubing. I know I should go out and buy a bender but they're not readily available around here. What are you planning on doing for a res Big_Baller868?

BTW- 1st post

lol, u mite bent the tubing otherwise, and that mite be a potential place to leak

For I res I bought a 30 qt coleman cooler, I'd like it smaller but we'll see how it turns out.

Hmmmmmm... Anything you shouldn't touch? As a general rule, when the A/C is plugged in, keep your hands in your pockets.
