What is the smallest item you have solered?

What is the most difficult item?

:D

Heres mine: 325w Weller soldering traces on an50r that are the size of the tip of a needle. I'll have another pic up tomarrow of work completed so far.. this image I took yesterday so I could see which ones needed to be fixed and which didnt (too small to see!!!).

Heres the pic

Thing on the right is tip of a needle...

325 watt? I have one of those, but I never use it for PCB soldering. Are you sure you arn't going to kill the board from all of the heat?

For traces its easier to just use conductive ink.

Wow, explain your tecnique! how did you manage to get solder into a trace hole?

touch and go.

You have to heat the hole a little bit before putting the solder on....

you only need a 15w iron. use flux, andjust run lines of solder to connect the traces. or you can tin 30ag wire to connect them.

good luck on that :)

edit: well looks like you allready toasted the board :\

STEvil I also did such soldering on my 9800XT, sorry, can't post foto, sold card!

30 is way too HUGE :stick: That strand you see is a single strand from and IDE cable.... far smaller than 30 guage.

eh?

Seems as if he thinks that the flux, that can be seen on the photo, is burned PCB. :D

BTW, nice job so far STEvil. :):toast:

eh?

Do u mean a single wire or a single strand from a piece of stranded IDE wire? bc IDE wire is 28AWG for stranded and 30AWG for solid.

30ag is smaller then ide cable wires..

30AWG is Solid IDE, 28AWG is stranded IDE, see above post.

Single strand from multistrand UDMA/ATA 66/100/133 cable.. is that simple enough?

If you look in the pic it is approximatly 1/6th of a millimeter across, so that should be pretty self explanetory that it isnt from a single stranded cable..

If you want to get technical, i'd have to guess 40awg.

Next picture i'll put a hair in it purposely.

umm, yeah toasty board. 325watt soldering iron, umm, thats for anything but pcb soldering

did this one about 2.5 years ago...

yeah I don't get you and that 325w iron. I thought a 35w iron was too hot so I backed down to a 25w. Then again this is xtreme;)

Its all i've got.. too cheap or forgetfull to grab another, lol ;)

325W iron would kill an IC instantly, and thats not all flux, alot of that is scorched PCB, i doubt that board will ever see a POST.

no, its flux, and no, it doesnt kill IC's instantly.

Good evidence of that is the Infinity in the other room memtesting right now, the a7n8x i'm using to type this, my older epox 8rda+, a couple Epox 8kta3+'s, a shuttle AK11, my old R9700np, the current R9700 Pro i'm using right now, couple Kyro 2's, a GeForce 256, etc etc etc...

the iron does it have a small tip?

STEvil
07-30-2004, 08:10 PM
spade style tip, i've been considering making a pointed tip but not take then time to do so..

In other news I finished the board today with a trace pen and nail polish.. everything on the board appears to be working and I even got a half-hearted POST once or twice.. or at least thats what it seemed like ;)

Processor looks to be dead to me, or else the board doesnt like the GF256 I have on it.. and I dont have a spare PCI video card around to make sure..

well, i suck at soldering it seems. Almost burnt the resistor next to the 1597 resistor on my X800XT !! Thank god lol. The solder wouldnt stick after it kept being melted.

That Is a Motherboard and Cpu I sent him for some testing.. The Cpu I know is toast and if he can get the motherboard working he Got it Very Cheap :D

And if you are Wondering, I have worked at places that Build the Boards..

Most Plastic BGA's have a reccomended Soldering settings of going through the Reflow Oven of 260C for 30 seconds.. I don't think that 325W will do that :D

But A 325W is Just too big for Ultra fine work :p:

STEvil

Yeah, it tops somewhere around 150-200c I think.

If I want real heat i've got a 1500w heat gun in the shop that works great for swapping ram chips and the like ;)

I wouldn't solder that. I would use a needle and some conductive silver laquer to reconnect it. Afer that I would fix it with clear coat.
