benchmarking

i am new to all this overclocking, benchmark stuff...

So my question is..
Why should I benchmark, why would I? What do I earn by benching?

i guess to see how your rig compares with others out there, for fun, for bragging rights, i'm not sure if you 'earn' anything by benching, but i can imagine that the more established record holders get privileges to new hardware and such for review and testing purposes.
