My friend bought an HP PC from CompUSA.
(what was he thinking?)
The WinXP defrag freezes about 1/4 the way through and CHKDSK runs flaky. I suspected hard drive problems and he took it to CompUSA for service. They kept it for two weeks and said they couldn't find any hardware/hard disk problem. And today they call him and say the PC has a virus and they could do a Recovery for $100.
I never heard of a virus that caused defragging to freeze.
Has anyone else ever heard of this?
I think they are trying to hose my friend.
There are not any other problems with the PC that I can see other than being a little sluggish, a symptom I attributed to a fragmented hard drive.
Does anyone have any other advice or recommend a free download defrag program?
Many thanks!
