View Full Version : Water Cool With Dry Ice ?

i have a home made wc with 2 rad. So i decide to make a box and put one rad inside with dry ice. Is it effective ? and what material shoul i use to make the box ?
It would be effective but your water would freeze. You will need to change the water for something like denatured alcohol and then just use a kitchen pan for the box and put it in your res. Also you would not need the radiator because they would warm up to liquid instead of cooling it. watch for your pump cracking under such low temperature. You will need insulation to stop condenstaion and loss of cooling too. I would advise this for people who have a waterchiller setup not really a normal water cooling setup unless you can be bothered changing it so DI can be used in the res. Even with allthat you would still have to watch ice forming under the pan and would have to take it out you stop your res becoming a large ice cube beofre waiting to put it back.

The only way it'd work would be with distilled water. I tried it with tap water and the CO2 reacted with the Calcium in the tap water and made clumpy flakes in the water :(

haven't tried it yet but thinking about taking my Reserator and dropping some dry ice into it.
entire reserator might turn to ice on the outside but I have WWF that I will mix some extra methanol in and should keep the lines free and clear.
Could, I fill with dry ice then bench once temps are low. after benching leave the system off for 24 hrs to let dry ice melt and system to get back to room temps and any condensation to evaporate.
workable or bad idea???
oh ya how cold is dry ice??? -20c ???

so what kind of die temps could be seen ???
also is DI cooling legal for bench testing??

I had a try at it myself once. :D
About a 3 quarts of striaght "Prestone Anti-freeze" (glycol)

It took about 35 mins and 12 lbs of dryice to get the temp that low. I think with a better resi and insulation it could be worth while. :D Only this is, it can be a little expensive due to having to use so much dryice in the container.
