Well...I will let you guys know how it works..just ordered one, ships 10/22/02. Couldn't resist it. If it works..great idea! I never saw any specs about what temps to expect.:D

Works great on horizontal open bench systems and you should really use a dedicated power supply. :)

Dude, where did you order one from?

Forget it... I just re-read the first post. ;)

You don't think my TTGI 520w will handle it? It ran my vapo with 2 cd drives, 2 hdds and a 120 floppy? You may be right..just wondering. Does it do a good job of cooling? Thanks

It might be enough but considering the Vapo I believe draws 130W for the standard and 160W for the Premium edition, it might be alright. You never know until you try it out I guess. The one that I saw running was using a dedicated power supply and the temperatures that I saw were below ambient at full load. :)

Either way, I'm sure a dedicated supply would be nice to have...just that I have spent a ton of money on puters lately...couple of grand at least! But hey, it makes me happy and life is short!:D

Short? I'll say! According to scientists... 6 years. *joy!*

Damn 6 years! I better start upgrading all my rigs now! I won't have to worry about paying off my credit cards any more. Oh well...six good years is better than 60 bad ones!;)

Dude,

I would try a dedicated PSU, the pelt will suck up close to 18amps. Your PSU is what, 20 amps on the 12v, not good.

OPP

TheDude
10-24-2002, 05:14 PM
yeah OPP, been thinking about that since DaGoochMeister brought it up......don't need to kill my TTGI.

Thanks, I might get one from Radio Shack for around $100. Be nice to have either way. It won't go in my main rig, just thought it was a cool piece of hardware to check out.:D

PS I got a 80mm 80something cfm Volcano fan for it..gonna be loud but it's in the basement so no one cares.

Anyone get thiers yet? I pre-ordered one 2nd day delivery so I thought it might be here in time for playing this weekend. :( Oh well, there's always next weekend. ;)

Parts came in to THEM last night, so they will be shipping orders out at the begining of the week:D I got an email from them today, I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago. How are you powering yours?

Jeff
10-25-2002, 05:11 PM
I just received an email from them saying it's shipped via UPS 2nd day air and I should be receiving it on the 29th.

I was working on an old Digital/Alpha power supply but I can't seem to get it to fire up. If I run into a dead end, I'm probably just going for the Radio Shack 25A supply.( here (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F008%5F001%5F000%5F000&product%5Fid=22%2D510))

Yeah I just got email my eta is 11/1/02...I think I am just gonna jump an old PS for now and if I really like it, buy one that will fit in a drive bay later.

for $120, you can get the 320w one swiftech recommends for their 226w pelts (capable of handling up to 3 such TECs) from sidewindercomputers.com (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/samam32inpsu.html).

I highly recommend picking up a swiftech pump relay for the psu, it'll turn the power supply on and off with your computer (connected through a molex connector to the computer). This way, if your computer runs into trouble and shuts off, you won't BBQ your chip :flame:

BermudaTriad,

The pump relay is an excellent idea that I had not thought of...thanks!:D

Ehmm, it can't handle 3 of those pelts. But you can hook up three devices to it is what I believe you mean. Then again, with some soldering you can hook up as many things as you want (within 320w).

BermudaTriad
10-26-2002, 04:06 PM
d'oh, i did mean 3 devices that add up to less than 320w

so guys do u think a 651 watt Enermax PSU would support a 226 watt peltier, water-cooling setup and the rest of my system?

BermudaTriad
10-27-2002, 11:53 PM
i'd only power my TECs with a dedicated switching power supply; preferably a small one that has connectors for bare wires, like the samlex 320w psu (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/samam32inpsu.html), if they are rated above 120w.

as long as it can supply a healthy amount of juice (the samlex can do 25amps@12v and 20a@15v), it should work.

Just received this "little" guy. I'd be testing it now but I think I'm going to wait for my Epox 8K9A2+ to show up tomorrow first. I have a 8K3A+ that I could try it out on but the 9A2+ is supposed to o/c a little bit better so I wait...

This is my first MCX462 heatsink and it's comparable to an Alpha PAL8045 but prettier. ;)

BermudaTriad
10-29-2002, 06:06 PM
and it's got those nifty ribbed pins for your cooling pleasure...
transfers into about twice as much surface area.

the only real difference between the MCX462+ and the MCX462 is the screw holes for mounting the cold plate, and a bigger copper base for better heat absorption.

one thing you must be very careful of when using peltiers is condensation. just about anything that gets more than 15C under the temperature of air around it will collect water droplets... which is why swiftech includes neoprene gaskets with their TEC kits. I don't know about an air cooled 226w TEC, but if it were water-cooled, i'd want to put dielectric grease in the socket pin holes. It's non-conductive grease, but it creates an airtight seal around your CPU pins

Jeff
10-29-2002, 06:18 PM
Thanks for the advice BermudaTriad. :toast:

I already have some dielectric grease and I'm definitely going to be using it. Last year with just ducting outside winter air on my CPU, I ran down in the 10C-30C range for most of the winter. ;) This year, I'm hoping to be running well below that.

Are you supposed to put grease/vaso on top of the processor when using a TEC? Not on the core, but on the substrate where the bridges are?

TIA

Wayne H
11-01-2002, 01:48 PM
I presonally dont but it depends on your method of insulation and if you think its appropiate then do it. With that swiftech heatsink it isnt needed they should supply all the needed gaskets.

Jeff
11-01-2002, 02:19 PM
Thanks. :toast:

From what I'm reading... is it supposed to be that if you seal the TEC onto the processor good enough, you shouldn't get condensation? If that's so, then I'm missing something because my TEC had a bit when I was changing cpus. :(

Wayne H
11-01-2002, 02:22 PM
What i try to do when im insulating is try to make a seal around the cpu and cold plate stoping any outside air from leaking in and causing condensation. it doesnt matter to much is there is air in there aslong as no out side air gets in.

Jeff
11-01-2002, 03:48 PM
Ok, that's what I thought. Thanks again. :toast:

I've ran my 462-ut, and my rig on a antech true 550 for a week with no problems. You gotta no connect with the molex connectors, 24 amp they turn brown from the heat quick.

But i've had no problems. I have a variable 5-17 volt PS, I just figured i would try the PS in my rig, 12volts drops down to 11.74, but has no affected the overclock in any way.

Im back to my Variable though, I ususally run it @ 9 volts all day long when at work,
